The Foiling Optimist

01:38
Graphene and hydrofoils gives optimist dinghy superpowers Students and researchers at Chalmers University of Technology and SSPA Sweden has designed and developed an optimist dinghy with supreme capabilities. By using a composite with added graphene the hull is made stronger and lighter. Hydrofoils are added to lift the boat, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds. After experimenting and testing in SSPA:s ship research and development facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, the dinghy is ready to be tried out at sea for the first time. @axelrahmsailing will do the honors.
Meet the two-time world champion in memory

04:02
What do a cake, a ghost and a helmet have in common? Well, they represent the first nine decimals of pi. At least, that’s according to Jonas von Essen, student at Chalmers University of Technology and two-time world champion in memory. Six years ago, Jonas von Essen had no idea that he would become a two-time world champion in memory. He even says that he had quite a bad memory. Thanks to a book on memory techniques he found at the library, Jonas started to get interested in the subject and only three months later, he won the Swedish championship in memory. One year after that he became world champion. Read more here: https://www.chalmers.se/en/news/Pages/world-champion-teaches-you-how-to-remember.aspx

Electricity generating textiles

03:21
Sweaty and heavy? That is when the textile works at its best. Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed a fabric that converts kinetic energy into electric power, in cooperation with the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås and the research institute Swerea IVF. The greater the load applied to the textile and the wetter it becomes the more electricity it generates. The results have now been published in the Nature Partner journal Flexible Electronics. Vera Sandberg – Sveriges första kvinnliga ingenjör

01:00

Making boats from ocean plastic waste

02:37
Plastic waste in the oceans is a huge environmental problem. During the spring and summer of 2018 volunteers collected six cubic meters of washed up plastic waste on the Swedish coast line. Experts at SSPA (read more here: https://www.sspa.se/news/ocean-plastics-dinghies) and Chalmers University of Technology have used some of this plastic waste to build optimist dinghies. The project is a national flagship activity to raise awareness on ocean plastics and on the importance of reusing waste as a resource. In this video researchers at Chalmers University of Technology address the question whether the reuse of such plastic waste in new products generates a positive environmental impact. To find out they will quantify and compare the impact of manufacturing processes for standard boat building versus "waste-to-boat building". During 2019, the optimists will appear at various sailing races around the country where the public will have a chance to see them and take a tour. Optimist för havet will continue further in 2020. The project is run by Håll Sverige Rent, Sjöräddningssällskapet and Svenska Seglarförbundet with funding from Postkodlotteriet.
