Jack Goods, Oh`Boy

25:13
In British music history only one person can claim to have played a similar role to that played by Alan Freed in America when spreading the word about Rock'n'Roll -- that person is Jack Good. Journalist, record and musical producer (Catch My Soul), the first man to put Rock'n'Roll on British TV with the legendary Oh Boy -- and who gave Howlin' Wolf his only TV appearance on Shindig. JACK GOOD, pop music's man of many trades, is the sort of person with whom one can come straight to the point. And that's precisely what I did (writes Derek Johnson), when I called at his Chiswick flat and asked him several no-holds-barred questions. For his part, Jack was equally forthright with his replies, and made no attempt to be evasive as you will see in this hard hitting person-to-person discussion. Q. Having established a slick, fast-paced show with "Oh Boy!" why was this successful formula changed to an ordinary run-of-the-mill- type of presentation for "Boy Meets Girls"? A. There are two main reasons. First, we had to move from Hackney Empire, eminently suited to the "Oh Boy!" type of presentation, to Manchester - where we were allocated a studio which was not capable of this sort of production. Q. Do you think that Cliff Richard would have been more successful or less successful had there never been an Elvis Presley? A. I don't think Cliff would have existed at all as a singer without Elvis. He certainly wouldn't be the singer he is today. The initial impetus of Cliff's singing was entirely due to Elvis' influence. MR ROCK`N`ROLL,ALAN FREED

35:52
Alan Freed is commonly referred to as the father of Rock'n'Roll due to his promotion of the style of music, and his introduction of the phrase Rock and Roll, in reference to the musical genre, on mainstream radio in the early 1950s. He helped bridge the gap of segregation among young teenage Americans, presenting music by African-American artists (rather than cover versions by white artists) on his radio program, and arranging live concerts attended by racially mixed audiences.Freed appeared in several motion pictures as himself. In the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock, Freed tells the audience that Rock and Roll is a river of music which has absorbed many streams: rhythm and blues, jazz, ragtime, cowboy songs, country songs, folk songs. All have contributed greatly to the big beat. Freed also appeared in a number of pioneering rock and roll motion pictures during this period. These films were often welcomed with tremendous enthusiasm by teenagers because they brought visual depictions of their favorite American acts to the big screen, years before music videos would present the same sort of image on the small television screen. 1956: Rock Around the Clock featuring Freed, Bill Haley & His Comets, The Platters, Freddie Bell and the Bellboys, Lisa Gaye. 1956: Rock, Rock, Rock featuring Freed, Teddy Randazzo, Tuesday Weld, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Johnny Burnette, LaVern Baker, The Flamingos, The Moonglows. 1957: Mister Rock and Roll (film) featuring Freed, Rocky Graziano and Teddy Randazzo, Lionel Hampton, Ferlin Husky, Frankie Lymon, Little Richard, Brook Benton, Chuck Berry, Clyde McPhatter, LaVern Baker, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. 1957: Don't Knock the Rock featuring Freed, Bill Haley and His Comets, Alan Dale, Little Richard and the Upsetters, The Treniers, Dave Appell and His Applejacks. 1957: Mister Rock and Roll (film) featuring Freed, Rocky Graziano and Teddy Randazzo, Lionel Hampton, Ferlin Husky, Frankie Lymon, Little Richard, Brook Benton, Chuck Berry, Clyde McPhatter, LaVern Baker, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. 1957: Don't Knock the Rock featuring Freed, Bill Haley and His Comets, Alan Dale, Little Richard and the Upsetters, The Treniers, Dave Appell and His Applejacks. 1959: Go, Johnny Go! featuring Freed, Jimmy Clanton, Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, The Flamingos, Jackie Wilson, The Cadillac's, Sandy Stewart, Jo Ann Campbell, Harvey Fuqua and The Moonglows. Chuck Berry also played Freed's pal and sidekick, a groundbreaking role in those days. Tuesday Weld who played the main female character was 13 years old in the film Rock Rock Rock..

Janis Martin Rockabilly Queen

08:01
Janis Darlene Martin (March 27, 1940 – September 3, 2007) was an American rockabilly and country music singer. She was one of the few women working in the male-dominated rock and roll music field during the 1950s and one of country music's early female innovators. Martin was nicknamed the Female Elvis for her dance moves on stage, similar to those of Elvis Presley. At age 15, Martin signed with RCA Victor in March 1956, just two months after Elvis Presley joined the label. She recorded "Will You Willyum" on March 8, 1956, backed by her own composition, "Drugstore Rock 'n Roll". Please note! Sam Phillips And Sun Records

36:06
In a small studio in a small brick building at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, Sam Cornelius Phillips recorded music in the 1950s that is ''one of the true touchstones of American culture''. Phillips fostered an atmosphere in his studio that inspired creativity in the musicians he recorded, and he had an exceptional ear for a new kind of artist and a new kind of music. The evidence of Phillips’ intuitive feel for talent is astonishing. During an eight-year period he discovered and recorded B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison, and many others. Some of the artists Phillips recorded would redefine the musical genres in which they worked. Many of them made for Phillips not only their first recording s but also their best. In 1952, two years after he opened the Memphis Recording Service, Phillips started his own record company. Sun Records was ''the first great rock and roll record label''.

The Collins Kids

09:43
Larry and Lorrie Collins, originally from Oklahoma, were a brother-sister rockabilly duo. Although they never had a hit, the siblings were very well known in the second half of the 1950s, thanks to their frequent appearance on television. In February 1954 Larry and Lorrie entered a Town Hall Party contest and were hired to perform on television the following day. Town Hall Party had started as a radio show in Compton, California in 1951, made the move to television in 1953 and later went into syndication in 26 half-hour episodes as Ranch Party. Together and individually the Collins Kids were on every episode. The pair were noted for colourful costumes and more colourful performances. They harmonized while Larry bounced around like a mosquito on speed, playing a double-necked guitar. By 1955 Larry had become a real guitar wizard, trained by Joe Maphis, who had been on Town Hall Party almost from its inception and who played the same double-neck Mosrite. Please note! Wanda Jackson Queen of Rock`n`Roll

09:43
Born in Oklahoma in 1937, singer Wanda Jackson began performing while still in high school and had signed with Capitol Records by the time she was 20. Her hit songs, including 1959's "Let's Have a Party," climbed both the country and rock charts, earning her the "Queen of Rockabilly" title. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. In 1955, soon after graduation, Jackson joined the Ozark Jubilee tour that featured many up-and-coming acts, including Elvis Presley. The two briefly dated and Presley told her to try singing rockabilly, an early version of rock and roll whose name comes from a blend of "rock" and "hillbilly." The sound was shaped by rhythm and blues, country, and swing. "In 1956, at Elvis's insistence, I started singing rock 'n' roll songs. He had made me promise that I would try to sing some rockabilly, so I did. There were four or five years that I recorded rockabilly music… Once I sang it, I realized I love rock 'n' roll, and I can sing it. Elvis was right." Please note! Several recording stars were discovered at, or performed at, the coffee bar, including Rory Blackwell, Tommy Steele, The Vipers Skiffle Group, Cliff Richard, Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett, Tony Meehan, Jet Harris, Brian 'Licorice' Locking, Vince Eager, Terry Dene, Wee Willie Harris, Adam Faith, Carlo Little, Joe Brown, Clem Cattini (The Tornados), Eden Kane, Screaming Lord Sutch, Tony Sheridan, Keith Kelly, Timothy Fitzpatrick, Lance Fortune, Jay Chance, Albert Lee, Johnny Kidd, Paul Gadd , Ritchie Blackmore, Alex Wharton, Mickie Most (as the Most Brothers) and Big Jim Sullivan. According to an article in Time, skiffle was new to the UK, and the 2i's Coffee Bar and, nearby, The Cat's Whisker, founded by Peter Evans, were where "Soho hipsters swelter and suffocate for it... and... generally the musicians were paid with coffee and cokes". Evans later started the Angus Steak Houses from the bar. Lionel Bart and Mickie Most worked there as waiters. Led Zeppelin's manager, Peter Grant, was a bouncer at the 2i's prior to his career in the music business. The 2i's closed in 1967. It later became the Dome Cafe Bar and then the Boulevard Bar. The site then became The House of Ho, a modern Vietnamese restaurant owned by chef Bobby Chinn. From July 2016 the site has been the Soho Poppies Fish & Chips restaurant.

Eddie Cochran Twenty Flight Rock

01:47
For an artist who died in 1960 when he was only 21 years old, Eddie Cochran left behind a surprising number of tracks, “C’mon Everybody,” “Twenty Flight Rock,” and “Summertime Blues,” along with other gems like “Cut Across Shorty,” all of which magnify the loss to rock & roll when Cochran died: he was a fine songwriter and he knew his way creatively around a recording studio. Cliff Richard Move It

02:22
Cliff Richard was originally marketed as a rebellious rock and roll singer in the style of Little Richard and Elvis Presley. With his backing group, The Shadows, Richard dominated the British popular music scene in the pre-Beatles period of the late 1950s to early 1960s. His 1958 hit single, "Move It", is often described as Britain's first authentic rock and roll song, and John Lennon once claimed that before Cliff and the Shadows, there had been nothing worth listening to in British music. Marty Wilde , born as Reginald Leonard Smith ( Blackheath, London , April 15, 1939 ) is a British singer , who was part of the first generation of stars that American Rock-'n-roll artists followed. Men of the Confederate states, who went to war for their own country. The Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, was the government created by the 11 Southern states of the United States after they seceded from the Union. The Union refused to recognize the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis of Mississippi and Alexander H. Stephens of Georgia served as president and vice president, respectively, of the Confederacy. Four other slave states—Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri—remained in the Union. The latter two were actually represented on the Confederate flag, which, like the Stars and Stripes, featured a star for every state. Please note!
