My steel house - life in a Pizarro armoured vehicle

10:26
In 2017, NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence saw four new deployments, bringing multinational battlegroups into Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland as a response to changing security environments along NATO’s eastern border. As part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia, Spain has deployed a heavy armoured unit abroad for the first time. Around 300 troops, 250 of which are from the Mechanised Infantry Brigade “Extremadura XI”, supported by Leopard tanks and Pizarro armoured vehicles, were stationed in eastern Europe for six months. They constituted the second biggest contingent of the Latvian-based battlegroup led by Canada. The battlegroup has also been supported by troops from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. This story follows three crew members of a Pizarro armoured vehicle and their day-to-day life. The film crew embedded with the Brigade “Extremadura XI” from the pre-deployment training until their multinational training in Latvia. Brothers in Arms – British and Estonian troops renew their bond in the Baltics

02:22
British and Estonian troops share a bond that dates back to the end of the first world war. At that time, the British Army assisted the Estonians in their fight against the Russian Bolsheviks and helped the country gain its independence. More recently, they have continued to work together in several operations and missions. One of the longest being their participation in the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan. During the deployment in Halmand, Estonian and UK troops shared tactics and practices that would help continue a long-lasting connection. British and French troops have recently deployed to Estonia to support a multinational battlegroup, as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). The battlegroup has participated in the last two weeks in its first major exercise, Spring Storm 2017. It is giving the British and French troops, which also share a long history of interoperability, the opportunity to strengthen their union with the Estonian Army. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Fighting the cold

03:07
In the Arctic, a soldier’s greatest foe isn’t the enemy – it’s the cold. We follow a company of US Marine infantry as they learn how to survive, fight and prevail in conditions that are constantly working against them. In the mountains of northern Norway, they learn how to survive an ice fall-in, live in sub-zero temperatures, and conduct combat operations in terrain that makes the rudiments of warfare – moving and fighting – much more difficult. During the field training portion of Exercise White Claymore 18, the US Marines tested their skills in the Norwegian backcountry, where they tracked down and attacked the UK Royal Marine opposing force in a simulated scenario. We interview a Norwegian infantry captain, two UK Royal Marine mountain warfare experts, and a US Marine infantry sergeant. Footage includes shots of Norwegian and US infantry traversing the Arctic backcountry on skis, firing weapons and patrolling under the aurora borealis. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

Norwegian troops arrive in Lithuania

01:44
Norwegian soldiers have arrived in Lithuania. Norway has sent around 200 troops to the country to join a multinational NATO battlegroup led by the Germans. The move is in support of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP), which has also seen the setting up of three other battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia and Poland. NATO’s eFP, decided at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016, is a response to changing security environments in the east of the Alliance. Earlier this year NATOChannel met with Lieutenant Silje Johansen Willassen, tank commander of the Telemark Batallion, during her pre-deployment training. Now she has arrived in Lithuania along with her platoon, ready to be part of the German-led battlegroup. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Iceland: NATO’s eye in the north

Iceland is a founding member of NATO, yet maintains no standing army. Aside from the police force, Iceland’s only armed government entities are its coast guard and its crisis response unit, or ICRU, both of which have contributed to NATO exercises at home and abroad, notably in Afghanistan. Iceland maintains an airbase, managed and run by the Icelandic Coast Guard, which provides support for NATO air surveillance and policing missions in the area. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Baltic Sea security - a shared priority for Sweden and NATO

04:07
Sweden has responded to a changing security situation in Europe by increasing its military spending, reintroducing conscription and hosting large-scale exercises. It has also stationed troops back on the strategically important Swedish island of Gotland, in the middle of the Baltic Sea, for the first time in more than a decade. While Sweden is not a NATO nation, NATO and Sweden have a strong partnership and actively work together in peace and security operations, and for both, providing security in the Baltic Sea region is a priority. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Mining for minerals in 🇦🇫Afghanistan

Afghanistan is estimated to have $3 trillion worth of mineral deposits, which through years of insecurity have remained unexploited. Gold, iron ore, copper ore, emeralds, lapis, rubies as well as natural gas are all found in the north of the country. Now with help from advisors from the US Task Force for Business and Stability Operations (TFBSO), the Afghanistan Geological Survey is gaining the skills it needs to explore and exploit the country's resources. Geologists and drillers are being trained to investigate sites to test for the presence of resources. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #Afghanistan #minerals

How to become a Norwegian conscript

03:49
Norway is one of the few countries in the Western world that still has national service. Any citizen between the ages of 18 and 44 can be called upon to defend the country if it comes under attack. When teenagers reach 17, they have to submit a form online. That is then reviewed and the army selects around 15 percent of that age group for conscription. We followed conscripts on training in Latvia as part of their national service. Readying first responders to fight terror

02:09
Terrorist attacks are one of the most challenging threats the international community has to deal with. As the attackers are constantly changing their strategies, authorities need to adjust their techniques over time, to minimise loss of life and prevent the attacks as much as possible. NATO is funding a multinational course, led by the Irish Defence Forces Ordnance Corps, to share with commanders coming from all over the world the latest techniques to better manage and counter the marauding terrorist threat. Military and police personnel from 17 nations (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Pakistan, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, UK and USA) representatives of the United Nations, the European Union and academia along with experts from the private sector, gathered in Ireland to share their expertise to fight a common enemy: terrorism. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

Europe reunited – why pieces of the Berlin Wall now stand at NATO’s new HQ

03:24
On 9 November 1989, Berliners started changing the political shape of the world by tearing down the wall that had divided the city and the Eastern and Western blocs for almost 30 years. The fall of the Wall was facilitated by both the increasing crisis of the Soviet regime and the substantial rise of protest movements behind the Iron Curtain. The success of protests in Poland, where the Polish labour union “Solidarity” (“Solidarność”) managed to be legalised and won the partially free elections held in the country in 1989, kicked off peaceful demonstrations in all Eastern Europe, leading the Soviet regime to collapse. This event in 1989 marked the first turning point in NATO’s history. From that moment onwards, the Alliance had to reshape itself to face new challenges and opportunities coming from a new political climate. As a tribute to this historic day, two pieces of the Berlin Wall will be permanently displayed in the new NATO Headquarters in Brussels. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Preparing to deal with the threat from chemical, biological and nuclear weapons

02:22
Not all wars are fought with bombs and bullets. As the threat from chemical, biological and nuclear weapons rises, NATO has stepped up its efforts in providing specialised training to partner countries who are most at threat. Under NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, a selection of first responders and biological, chemical and nuclear specialists from NATO’s southern partner countries Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia have undergone specialised training at the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence in Vyskov, Czech Republic. The participants received training in preparing to respond to a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) threat, learning advanced detection and decontamination methods. At the end of the training, the participants were equipped with enough knowledge to enable them to train first responders in their own countries. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to NATO YouTube http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

This Estonian submarine served in the Soviet Navy

Before World War II, EML Lembit was one of the two submarines built by the British for the Republic of Estonia. The Estonians held the largest and most successful national fund-raising event in Estonian history at which they donated scrap metal in order to pay for the submarine. When the Soviet Union occupied Estonia during World War II, Lembit became part of the Soviet fleet. Years later, two veterans who used to serve on the Lembit found the submarine abandoned in a river. NATO - Ballistic Missile Defence Overview (animation)

06:16
SUBSCRIBE to NATO YouTube http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe Overview of Ballistic Missile Defence. This animation illustrates how NATO's ballistic missile defence capability is designed to work in the hypothetical scenario. NATO conducts thorough planning to make the best use of all weapons systems and censors under its command. More information can be found here: http://goo.gl/6omgc Ballistic missiles pose an increasing threat to Allied populations, territory and deployed forces. Over 30 countries have, or are acquiring, ballistic missile technology that could eventually be used to carry not just conventional warheads, but also weapons of mass destruction. The proliferation of these capabilities does not necessarily mean there is an immediate intent to attack NATO, but it does mean that the Alliance has a responsibility to take this into account as part of its mission to protect its populations. In early 2010, NATO acquired the first phase of an initial capability to protect Alliance forces against ballistic missile threats. At the November 2010 NATO Summit in Lisbon, NATO's leaders decided to develop a ballistic missile defence (BMD) capability to pursue its core task of collective defence. To this end, they decided that the scope of the current Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence (ALTBMD) programme's command, control and communication capabilities will be expanded beyond the capability to protect forces to also include NATO European populations and territory. In this context, the US European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) and other possible national contributions were welcomed as a valuable national contribution to the NATO ballistic missile defence architecture. NATO's work on BMD started in the early 1990s in response to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems, including missiles. The initial focus was on protecting deployed NATO troops (Theatre Missile Defence), but work was expanded in 2002 to include considerations of the protection of population centres and territory (Territorial Missile Defence). ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr

Keeping our airspace safe

01:58
NATO cooperates with different partners all around the world to ensure its operations can run smoothly. Engaging with civil aviation is key in an increasingly busy airspace. Therefore, NATO works together with organisations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and EUROCONTROL for accommodation of military operations, planning of military exercises, day-to-day information-sharing, executing air policing activities, as well as working on projects to ensure safety of air traffic in different regions. One of the more notable civil-military initiatives by ICAO – the Baltic Sea Project Team – recently brought together NATO and Russia alongside other countries to cooperate in ensuring safety of air operations over the Baltic Sea. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

Afghan bees produce more than honey (NATO in Afghanistan)

03:35
Farmers in Afghanistan don't have access to large quantities of modern pesticides. They farm the old fashioned way - hoes, animal drawn ploughs and good old fashioned digging. In some of the northern provinces bee pollination is reaping a 10 - 50 per cent improvement in yield, while in the troubled south the bee business is proving so lucrative that some opium farmers are reportedly switching to apiculture. At a time when world bee numbers are in worrying decline, it is perhaps refreshing that in one of the world's poorest and most war-ravaged countries beekeeping is not only sustainable, but flourishing. Sainaie Satti and Sayed Khan Panjshiri, who work for the Afghanistan Ministry of Agriculture's Beekeeping Programme, give a window in Afghan apiculture and explain how bees are doing more for the country than simply producing honey. #NATO #Afghanistan #beekeeping ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Find NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on Google+: http://bit.ly/NATOgoogleplus Find NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr Thumbnail Photo by Spc.
