Surviving Alone in Alaska
Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America. In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier. Alaska: A Modern Frontier - 1948
Although overseen by an associate professor of geography at Indiana University back in 1948, one could easily be forgiven for making the mistake of coming away from Alaska A Modern Frontier with the message Drill, baby, drill. Nearly a decade before its annexation as a state, this short film professes the new land rush in post-WW2 Alaska, where if you dont get a piece now, youll be left empty-handed. Much of the film shows very little of the colder, darker winter months. Some of the most interesting footage does not occur until near the end when encountering native Alaskans still practicing their traditional way of life. See more at: weirdovideo.com

The Last Frontier, a documentary series focusing on experimental seabed mining, an imminent venture in the Pacific. This documentary presents the situation in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Despite the experimental nature and a dearth of knowledge about hydrothermal vents and deep sea ecosystems, Nautilus Minerals Inc. is already prospecting PNG’s Bismarck Sea with an aim to begin mining as early as 2019. This film highlights a general failure by authorities to incorporate sufficient environmental protections, as well as the norm of free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) for indigenous peoples of the Bismarck Sea. These are the voices of the guardians protecting the Last Frontier.

Our Alaskan Winter, 1949
"Our Alaskan Winter" is a silent film by Harmon “Bud” Helmericks and Constance Helmericks, circa 1949. The film details the Helmericks' lives as homesteaders in the Brooks Mountain Range of Alaska, and as explorers of northern Alaska and Canada. Bud Helmericks and his first wife Constance (Connie) Helmericks spent more than a decade living in and exploring northern Alaska during the 1940s and 1950s. Constance was the best-selling author of eight non-fiction books, five detailing their lives and adventures in the far north. Films that the couple shot on 16mm color film were the subject of national lecture tours. Shot with great care and artfulness under extreme living conditions, these films depict the unique lives of the Helmericks family, as well as the rapidly-changing lives of Iñupiat peoples during the era of pre-Statehood and pre-pipeline Alaska. Bud and Connie's daughter, Jean Aspen, continues the family story in her books and documentaries at http://www.jeanaspen.com Detailed summary information for "We Live in the Arctic" was provided by the filmmakers. According to these notes, the film includes scenes of the “Arctic Tern” (Cessna 170 airplane) on skis; Six different airplanes, all named the “Arctic Tern” and all painted with a bird symbol, were used in the production of the three Helmericks films over seven years; Upon return to Brooks Range cabin in Alaska after many months away, Bud takes down hanging empty gas cans left to scare bears away; Bud shows how the arctic dweller uses an ice chisel — it takes about one hour to cut through the four-foot ice of Takahula Lake; Lifting out net and fish catch; Icy lake water is hauled to the house; Tramping down an airfield for the plane with snowshoes; It is necessary to push a small piece of stove-wood under each ski of the airplane when parked to keep it from freezing down; Oliktok Point on the Arctic Ocean; Friends run out of their door waving joyously; Bud and George work with shovels and flags to make a more safe airplane field; Oolak returns hours later with a load of small driftwood sticks for fuel; Sled with a big sail approaches out of the frozen ocean; Carrie with her boy Maugulauk and husband Jacob; When Carrie becomes ill, Bud flies her to Point Barrow Hospital during wind storm; Back at Oliktok Point camp, Connie directs the airplane to safety; Dog buried in snow in a spring blizzard during month of May; Another dogsled visitor arrives, and all shake hands with Colliak, who has come from 100 miles inland; Caribou butchered; Sawing out new sled from driftwood as Lydia plays about; Apiak, older son, builds sled flooring — it is necessary to make an entirely new sled almost every season; Flight out over the polar ice fifty miles; Landing fifty miles offshore where Apiak had designated a hunting camp in his earlier explorations by sled; Pitch tent; Rifle close at hand in case of polar bears; Travel via dogsled and hunting for seals; Polar bear tracks; Connie comes up to her dead polar bear — shot from the tent at 1 a.m. in late May — feasting (not shown) followed immediately after butchering; Seal meat goes into modern pressure cooker; Apiak serves dogs their meal; Starving seal has lost its diving hole and can’t find the ocean — carried in a sack on the sled to the nearest seal hole and it finally dove down into the ocean; On shore after two months at sea; Summer tent; Lydia, Nannie and George; Saying goodbye; Home to cabin at Takahula Lake; Unloading cargo from Hughes, the trading post (100 miles away), at the new dock at Takahula Lake; Bud cuts moose hide into strips and makes chairs; Connie casting for pike at tent camp at nearby Iniakuk Lake; Broken airplane tail — Bud fixes it by taking off part of the tail and then fortunately it flew OK; Connie catches a grayling; Geese migrating; Grizzly and moose and other animals; Roasting caribou ribs; Connie uses the little yellow kayak on Takahula Lake before winter; Ice pans float down the adjacent Alatna River; Arrigetch Peaks rising above the house; Bud and Connie, in full winter dress, are prepared for winter again; Connie reads contentedly by the blazing hearth. (Color/Silent/16mm film). This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-16009 and AAF-16010 from the Constance Helmericks Film collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. For more information please contact the Alaska Film Archives. Amazing Wildlife of Alaska(full documentary)HD
Alaskan adventure with the world through Bears of the Last Frontier. It has been quite the journey. The film has been nearly two years in the making, and for both of us it has become an unforgettable part of our lives. Over the course of a year and a half we traveled well over 3000 miles across Alaska and shot 500 hours of footage for this epic three-hour PBS Nature series. We spent many, many months in bear country – piecing together the lives of these fascinating animals by observing and filming them, and by living in bear country, among the animals and people that share bear habitat. Alaska - "The Last Frontier" - May 2012
Mackenzie Images spent a week exploring some of the wonders of "The Last Frontier" the great state of Alaska. From our base at the Alyeska Hotel in Girdwood, we explored the Kenia Peninsula from Seward to Homer and many parts in between. We ventured out onto the waters of Resurrection Bay with Kenai Fjords Tours out of Seward. The surrounding waters and fjords afforded us the opportunity to enjoy the snow covered mountains, sea otters, bald eagles, sheep, black bears, orca whales, seals, sea lions, puffins and got very close to the foot of a 1,000,000 year old glacier. One of the highlights of the trip was a very rare encounter with a young female brown bear. She was sighted along Seward Highway, totally enjoying a sunny afternoon, playing with a discarded plastic bag. Another even more spectacular day was spent exploring Denali National Park and taking in the majesty of the Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. She stands 20,320 feet above sea level. The next day, we took the trip of a life time with K2 Aviation and flew from their base in Talkeetna, AK up and around Mt. McKinley and ultimately landed on a glacier that is used as a base camp for the climbers that make the assent of the mountain. We were blessed with a perfectly clear day which made for some fantastic photographic opportunities. At this time of year the sun doesn't set until 10:30pm at night and it remains twilight until past midnight, so sunsets were a bit tricky to capture, but we got a few to share. Alaska is truly wild, majestic, and filled with adventures where ever you turn. From moose sightings that challenge you while driving, to the snow covered mountains that seem to rise to the heavens from the deep blue sea, this is a part of the world that should be seen and experienced.

Alaska, The Final Frontier
This video captures aspects of the essence of Alaska, with its seeming endless vastness and unique history and culture. It is truly America's final frontier. we went on a road trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks to experience the Midnight Sun Festival, then drove over a thousand miles of gravel road over the Brooks Range to the Arctic Ocean and back. The next leg of our trip took us through the Yukon and down to Skagway and Haines. From there we headed north to Valdez and Kenai Peninsula for the Marathon Mountain race and more fantastic scenery. Alaska's Marine Highway (Promo w Air Dates)
Transportation in Alaska has always been unique. With vast expanses of land and rugged geography, getting around the country has also been difficult.  Water, mountains, tundra, forests and ice make getting from place to place a challenge.   Since people first settled in Alaska, water travel has been a necessity and part of life.  For fifty years, a constant, stalwart and integral part of that history has been the blue and gold hulls of the Alaska Marine Highway ships.  These sea-going vessels serve as the only "roadway" to many parts of coastal Alaska and are an integral lifeline to the people who live along the 3500 miles of Alaska Marine Highway routes.   Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Alaska's Marine Highway and join residents and visitors on an adventure through the most rugged and beautiful surroundings in our country -- the Last Frontier of Alaska.

(Click here to watch now -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhfWp8agfTk) Now set up in what will be their home for the next two weeks deep within the epic Alaskan wilderness surrounded by incredible scenery, , Ian and Steve can't wait to being their epic hunt. However, they soon realise that in Alaska and things don’t always go to plan. The weather patterns are dramatic and unpredictable, Ian and Steve must wait out the persistent rain and fog before beginning their journey into the wilderness. Whilst this can be more than a little frustrating, Ian and Steve pass the time by telling hunting stories of their previous adventures in between the odd breaks in the weather where they’re able to catch a glimpse of a number of moose bulls far in the distance. As day three begins the weather had changed for the better. The team decides this would be the ideal time to glass the surrounding area and as luck would have it, the moose are within sight. They select a route and head off up the mountains for what’s sure to be an incredible outing on the first real day of the hunt.
