Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses?
Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask.

Steve McQueen truly is an American icon. Recently, Esquire Magazine noted that even 50 years after his career's peak, Steve McQueen "is still the King of Cool." Know more about the American Icon - Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll", or simply, "the King".
Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi as a twinless twin, and when he was 13 years old, he and his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee. His music career began there in 1954, when he recorded a song with producer Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was an early popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who managed the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the United States. He was regarded as the leading figure of rock and roll after a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines that coincided with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, made him enormously popular—and controversial.

htt-://www.happiness-project.com Years ago, when I was a lawyer, I clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor -- which was one of those rare, amazing, once-in-a-lifetime work experiences. There are many reasons that I don't regret law school and my years as a lawyer before becoming a writer, and the chance to work for Justice O'Connor is one of them.
The other day, I was on the phone with the Justice. We were talking about her terrific new site, Our Courts, which teaches children about civics, and she'd also visited my website.
"I can tell you what I believe is the secret to a happy life," she said.
"What's that, Justice?" I asked. (Sidenote: when you speak directly to a Justice, you address him or her as "Justice" -- e.g., "Justice, the cert petitions are here." This, I always thought, must act as a frequent reminder to them about the value they are supposed to embody!) "What's your secret?"
"Work worth doing," she answered firmly.
"What about relationships?" I asked. From what I can tell, looking at modern science and ancient philosophy, if you had to pick a single factor as the one most likely to lead to a happy life, having strong relationships would be a strong candidate. Of course, most people form a lot of strong relationships at work.
"No," she said. "Work worth doing, that's all you really need."
"Can I quote you?" I asked.
"Yes, yes," she said.
Work worth doing. What do you think? Is that the one thing you need for a happy life?

Greg Laurie: Harvest Ministries has partnered with the Erwin Brothers—the filmmakers that produced October Baby, Moms' Night Out, and Woodlawn—to bring you the new feature film Steve McQueen: American Icon.
Steve McQueen truly is an American icon. Recently, Esquire Magazine noted that even 50 years after his career's peak, Steve McQueen "is still the King of Cool." Despite abounding biographies and articles on the acting legend's life, many people are unaware that Steve McQueen was a believer in Jesus Christ.
On the surface he had everything—global fame, cars, homes, more money than he could spend in a lifetime—but he also had a hole in his heart. He was the highest paid movie star in the world, but he was not happy or complete until he became a Christian.
Greg Laurie states, "That is the story I want to tell in this film—a story people have never seen before." Producer and director Jon Erwin said, "This film will be a one-night, nationwide cinematic event that will invade hundreds, perhaps a thousand theaters this fall. And most importantly, it will create an opportunity for Pastor Greg to use the story of how Steve McQueen found redemption and hope, and offer that same gospel message to the live theater audience."
This film is your opportunity to reach your world for Christ. Pray, invite, and bring someone who needs to hear the gospel with you to the theater. Share the incredible true story that changed the life of an American icon on Thursday, September 28 at a theater near you.

The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon
November 9, 2018–September 15, 2019
MIM’s newest exhibition, The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon, shares the untold story of the invention of the electric guitar, an instrument that revolutionized music and popular culture forever. This exclusive exhibition showcases more than eighty of the rarest electric guitars and amplifiers in the world―from some of the first ever heard to those played by the most famous electric guitarists known today. Guests will learn about the history of the electric guitar from the very beginning, including its most experimental period of the 1930s and 1940s, its impact on music and culture, and its current iconic status.
Highlights of the exhibition include Alvino Rey’s 1932 Electro A-25, likely the first electric guitar ever played on a national radio broadcast; a 1940 Gibson ES-250 played by Charlie Christian while a member of Benny Goodman’s sextet; Pete Townshend’s “#5” Gibson Les Paul Deluxe (pictured above), a staple of live performances by the Who in the late 1970s; and electric guitars played by Ron Wood and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

The Gilded Age left a legacy of decay on the American landscape.

Haunted houses are often depicted with similar features: decaying woodwork, steep angles, and Gothic-looking towers and turrets. The model for this trope is the Victorian mansion, once a symbol of affluence and taste during the Gilded Age - a period of American history marked by political corruption and severe income inequality.
After World War I, these houses were seen as extravagant and antiquated, and were abandoned. Their sinister relationship to the troubling end of the Victorian Era in America eventually led to their depiction as haunted and ghostly in both fine art and pop culture, and is now an unspoken symbol of dread.

Celebrated for her beauty and personal style, C.Z. Guest transcended eras to become an enduring figure of good taste. A grande dame of high society, she lived the good life and was photographed by such legends as Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton, John Rawlings, and Slim Aarons. Despite her patrician upbringing, C.Z. was surprisingly modern, exerting influence over America's cultural landscape for fifty years, whether attending her close friend Truman Capote's Black and White Ball, dancing at Studio 54, or partying at Andy Warhol's Factory.
Exploring her continuing influence in the spheres of society, fashion, and interiors, Rizzoli's book "C.Z. Guest: American Style Icon" is full of stunning images, from her days as a young bride, photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson, to her family life on her Long Island estate, Templeton, to her accomplishments as a gardener and her impeccable gardens, to her prominence in society, keeping company with everyone from Diego Rivera, Cecil Beaton, and Diana Vreeland to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
With insightful contributions by today's top tastemakers, this is the first book on C.Z. Guest and a must for devotees of fashion and style.

C.Z. guest is an American socialite, style icon, writer, horsewoman, as well as gardener.
For more than half a century after marrying Winston Frederick Churchill Guest (second cousin to Winston Churchill), an heir to the Phipps fortune in 1947, C.Z. Guest became one of the most photographed and covered society figures, whoes name was closely connected with Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Truman Capote, Cecil Beaton, Diana Vreeland, Ernest Hemingway.
Unlike Duchess of Windsor, another style icon of her time who liked to combine simply lined outfits with over stated jewelry , C. Z. Guest had a more simple taste and stuck to the same classic all American, at times sporty style all of her life.

For more than 50 years, the Corvette has been an American icon, a car that boasts unparalleled performance and represents a unique lifestyle. But with the 'Vette's 6th generation, the much-ballyhooed C6, right around the corner, the onus is on the engineers at Team Corvette to deliver a machine that lives up to the legacy of the Corvette name - and meets the expectations of a horsepower hungry public. Follow Chief Corvette Engineer Dave Hill - just the third engineer to oversee production of the Corvette - as he tweaks and tunes his latest design in the months leading up to the vehicle's debut. While fans expect the same classic Corvette style, he knows the car needs significant changes to bring it up to date for a new generation of drivers. The challenge is to perfect the car in real world conditions - without letting anyone from the real world get a sneak peek before it's ready. So while Dave and his crew tear through hairpin turns on Germany's Autobahn speedway, they keep a watchful eye on the rearview mirror for signs of Jim Dunne, the infamous spy photographer who's yanked the shroud of secrecy off more than a few pre-release vehicles. Jim has made it his mission to capture the first shot of a C6 before anyone else. With the media and fans desperate for a glimpse of the new model, Jim is just waiting for Team Corvette to slip up in order to capture his biggest prize yet. It's a race against time between two men on opposite sides of the assembly line - united by their admiration of what many consider America's greatest automobile.

On January 8, 2011, the world's most famous burlesque performer turns 100 years old. Join LIVE from the NYPL for a centennial celebration of the birth of Gypsy Rose Lee: novelist, playwright, New Yorker essayist, fashion icon, actress, activist, member of New York’s literati, world-famous “ecdysiast" and subject of one of the best-loved musicals in American history. Be amused and appalled by dramatic readings from never-before-published letters in Gypsy’s archives, housed in the New York Public Library.
Karen Abbott, author of AMERICAN ROSE, A Nation Laid Bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, in conversation with Paul Holdengraber, Director of LIVE, will strip Gypsy to the bone on a rollicking trip through time, from Gypsy's early years on the vaudeville circuit with Harry Houdini and Fanny Brice... to her time in New York City during the Roaring Twenties and The Great Depression among some of the Big Apple's most colorful characters.
Special guests include Jo "Boobs" Weldon (author of The Burlesque Handbook and Headmistress of The New York School of Burlesque) who will perform a burlesque tribute to Gypsy, Miss Tickle (three-time "Burlesque Hall of Fame" Trophy Winner in 2010) who will honor the birthday in true burlesque style—by popping out of a cake, burlesque legend Bambi Jones, The Rhinestone Follies, burlesque musician and historian Albert Garzon, “King of Boylesque” Tigger! (voted the “performer most likely to be shut down by the law” by the New York Burlesque Festival), “Burlesque Mayor of NYC” Jonny Porkpie and others!

Anna May Wong was a Chinese-American actress, and the first Asian-American actress to gain international recognition. Her career spanned silent film, television, stage, and radio.
Anna May was born on January 3, 1905, in Los Angeles to second-generation Chinese-American parents.
At 17, she landed her first lead role in a film in color, The Toll of the Sea.
At 19, she starred in The Thief of Baghdad, which introduced her to the public. However, her race prevented her from getting further lead roles in Hollywood.
Anna May was considered a fashion icon. In 1934, the Mayfair Mannequin Society of New York named her the “world’s best-dressed woman,” and in 1938, Look magazine called her the “world’s most beautiful Chinese woman.”
After dealing with the great disappointment of losing a role in the film The Good Earth, Anna May went on a tour of China, visiting her family’s ancestral village and studying Chinese culture.
She died in 1961, at the age of 56. She was a pioneer as a leading Asian-American actor who became popular with white audiences during a historical period of racial discrimination in the U.S.
