Sea Turtle Entangled in Ghost Net Rescued

04:32
This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost nets on marine animals. ***Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENT*** Video Credit and Copyright: Christine Figgener *** This footage is managed exclusively by Viralvideouk.com. If you wish to license this footage please contact [email protected] For more viral videos check here https://www.youtube.com/user/viralvideouk1 ** ----- Almost to the day exactly one year ago my research team found a plastic drinking straw embedded in a male olive ridley sea turtle's nostril (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH878t78bw). We removed it and hopefully eased his suffering and improved his quality of life. This past 9th of August 2016, my research team once again encountered a sea turtle in distress. We found an exhausted olive ridley female swimming close to our research boat and she was dragging a huge bulk of discarded fishing net behind her. Parts of it were wrapped around her throat and had already started to cut into her flesh. We took her onboard our boat, cut-off the net, and disinfected her cuts with iodine. Due to the knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, we released the female back into the water since she seemed otherwise healthy and strong. As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our research is approved by the US IACUC and is conducted under research permits issued by the Costa Rican government, MINAE/SINAC and CONAGEBio. If you like what my research team and I are doing, please consider donating to our GoFundMe campaign to finance our next field season. https://www.gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj If you would like to find out more about our work in Costa Rica and the members of our field team, Brie Myre, Kim Lato, and Marcus Saikaley, check out our field blog http://plotkinlabtamu.wixsite.com/plotkinlab/blog At this point, I would like to thank again everyone that donated to my GoFundMe Campaign during the past year! These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. Acting as designed, the nets restrict movement, causing starvation, laceration and infection, and suffocation in those that need to return to the surface to breathe. Sea Turtle with Straw up its Nostril - "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS

08:07
This is the original video! Filmed by Christine Figgener, marine biologist at Texas A&M University. ***WARNING: Graphic Content & Inappropiate/ Strong Language!*** This video shows graphically why plastic waste is detrimental to marine life, especially single-use plastics (such as straws, which are one of the most redundant items). This turtle suffers from an item that is human-made and used by most of us frequently. The research team around Christine Figgener (Texas A&M University) found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril and they removed it. SAY "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS, AND ANY KIND OF ONE-TIME USE PLASTIC ITEMS! If you would like to support our research and conservation efforts in Costa Rica, please think about donating to our GoFundMe Campaign http://gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj UPDATES The Plastic Pollution Coalition just launched their "No Straw" Campaign in collaboration with us. Take the No-Straw-Pledge and learn more: http://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.... ----- The Story behind the viral video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLN52... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MPHb... OUR STORY: My research team found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril. After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece off to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at. After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knife which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incurred a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely. The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle. We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild. The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw, and when we released him, he swam happily away. The turtle very likely swallowed the straw while ingesting other food items and then either expelled the straw together with the redundant sea water through her nostrils, or regurgitated the straw and it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct. Plastic Fork Removed From Sea Turtle's Nose

01:34
Video recorded by Sean A. Williamson. This olive ridley sea turtle was found with a plastic fork stuck inside its nostril. Lamentably, this is a consequence of a world of single-use, non-biodegradable plastic. There is a solution and it lies in our own decisions. Please say no to all single-use plastic. Every plastic straw, plastic bag, or plastic bottle that ends up in the oceans could mean the difference between life or death for any number of marine animals. The choice is easy. There are sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Canvas bags can replace plastic bags, bamboo cutlery can replace plastic cutlery. Please be part of the movement away from single use plastics. Nathan J. Robinson and the Las Baulas field team were able to remove the fork and the turtle returned to the ocean breathing freely! Jose the turtle was found on Torre García beach in Almería, Spain by locals walking on the beach. Luckily they contacted Equinac - a nearby non-profit organisation who specialise in helping sea turtles and cetaceans on the coast. Equinac volunteer Juan Cruz D’Amico said: “Jose was hit by a motor boat and a family who were walking on the beach saw him and called us. Man Jumps Into Ocean to Save 700-Pound Sea Turtle Being Choked By Kelp

01:06
Jason Kunewa was out on a boat when he noticed a leatherback sea turtle tangled in sea kelp. It was wrapped around it's left fin and neck. He didn't think twice, grabbed his GoPro, a knife and jumped into the ocean to save the 700-pound turtle. But saving the turtle had an extra special meaning for him. His aunt and grandmother in Hawaii often save sea turtles which are considered sacred animals to their family. Kunewa even has a tattoo on his arm of a sea turtle which is his family's symbol.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Hatchling Rescue!!!

06:54
Words cannot describe... I came across some baby sea turtle tracks one morning at the refuge and noticed many of the tracks went up into the dune instead of directly to the water. A quick search revealed several hatchlings floundering in the dune vegetation. As the acting refuge biologist, I am permitted to handle these protected turtles for purpose of rescue. This was an amazing opportunity for me to examine these amazing creatures up close and personal, a rare an priceless occurrence. These animals are protected, please do not approach them in the wild. Green sea turtle rescue - Fishing hook removal

02:53
Sea turtle surgeons remove a fish hook stuck deep inside the throat of an endangered green turtle. Every year an estimate of 100 sea turtles of varying species are treated this way by Amihan sa Dahican. Most of these beautiful and old creatures got caught by local fishermen. By paying the turtles worth in coffee and sugar (about 10 USD per animal) the Amihan boys and girls get their environmental hands on these animals. They treat them as needed and once the animals are better, they release them back on the beautiful sandy beaches of Dahican. Amihan is also involved in regular beach clean-ups and they monitor the local turtle nests and relocate the eggs to safe area's of the beach if necessary. The waves at Dahican beach are perfect for surfing, so apart from their environmental activities Amihan are also a group of dedicated and very skilled surfers and skimboarders. More about Amihan sa Dahican on their website: http://amihansadahican.com/ Special thank you to the virtual mother of the sea turtle - Sabrina Mannan - who came up with the beautiful name ' Emily ' for this poor nameless female. Shocking animal autopsy pictures show how plastic bags kill sea turtles

These disturbing images show the terrible damage plastic bags can inflict on vulnerable wildlife. The shocking autopsy pics show sea turtles in Australia that have been killed by the seemingly innocuous shopping item. Plastic bags are often ingested by the creatures who think they are jelly fish. They then form into balls which can block the turtles intestines and stomach. The turtles then either starve, have their gut punctured, or even die from toxins released by the bags. Roughly 180 million plastic bags are thrown away each year across the Australia, according to conservationists the Boomerang Alliance. The group are now calling for a nation-wide ban. Dr Larry Vogelnest, senior veterinarian at Sydney's Taronga Zoo told the Sydney Morning Herald : "Sea turtles are the main species we have affected. "They see these bags in the water and they think they are jelly fish, so they eat them. "70 per cent of turtles we get in have ingested plastic, around 20 per cent of those end up dying." The Australian Registry of Wildlife Health, which operates as part of the Zoo, has released these chilling images to show the damage the plastic bags can do. Shocking autopsy photos show how shopping bags kill sea turtles - forming balls of plastic in their stomach that rupture their intestines. Sea Turtle Rescue! | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

10:45
The Blue World team learns how sea turtles, mostly highly-endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtles, get caught in Massachusetts bay at the end of the summer and become stranded due to falling water temperatures. Then volunteers from the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary collect the stranded turtles on the beach and bring them to the New England Aquarium's animal care facility where they are nursed back to health. Finally the sea healthy sea turtles go back to Florida for release to the wild with the help of Sea World. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! Removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle's nostril - Short Version

02:24
While on a research project in Costa Rica, Nathan J. Robinson removed a 10 cm (4 in) plastic straw that was entirely embedded into the nostril of an olive ridley sea turtle. Lamentably, this is a consequence of the world of single-use, non-biodegradable plastic that we currently live in. There is a solution and it lies in our own decisions. Please say no to all single-use plastic. Every plastic straw, plastic bag, or plastic bottle that ends up in the oceans could mean the difference between life or death for any number of marine animals. Video taken by: Christine Figgener.

10 Oldest Living Creatures

08:18
From the elusive cave dwelling salamander, to the invincible koi fish, these are 10 of the OLDEST living creatures ! Koi -- Well known to inhabit decorative ponds, Koi are a domesticated and ornamental variety of the common carp. Certain varieties of koi are thought to live between 100-200 years. A famous red koi named “Hanako” reportedly lived to be 225 years old. Tortoise -- Tortoises are known for their longevity … but did you know the oldest tortoise lived to the ripe old age of 250 years old! Well, there is some controversy about that… But the story goes that Adwaita was captured in the Seychelles Islands in the 1700s, and was donated to the Alipore Zoo in India in 1875, and lived there -- outliving his keepers -- until 2006. Greenland Shark -- They’re also known as the Grey Shark or the Sleeper Shark … but they’re not as well known as the Great White although the Greenland rivals their size at over 20 feet long and weighing nearly 2500 pounds. One reason for the animal’s anonymity is their habitat. Native to North Atlantic waters, they prefer colder temperatures and tend to swim as deep as 2200 meters. And they’re thought to have long lifespans, possibly over 200 years. That number was arrived at when a shark was caught and tagged near Greenland in 1936. When it was recaptured in 1952, researchers found it had grown 6 cm longer. Following that formula, a mature 7-meter shark would be more than 200 years old. Ocean Quahog (qwa-hog) -- Much like the age of a tree can be deduced from its rings, these clams have dark concentric rings or banding on their shells that researchers interpret as annual marks. Judging from those rings, some specimens have been estimated at over 400 years old. In one notorious case from 2006, an ocean quahog clam nicknamed Ming was taken off the coast of Iceland. When its annual marks or growth rings were counted, the clam’s age was calculated at 405. When scientists opened the shell to study the animal’s insides, they effectively killed the clam. However, later analysis including carbon-14 dating proved the clam was actually 507 years old, making it the oldest individual animal whose age could be verified. It also earned Ming a Guinness Record for oldest mollusk. Ming, by the way, was named for the Chinese dynasty that was in power around the time it was born. Turritopsis Nutricula Jellyfish -- This animal might have actually found the fountain of youth. Endemic to the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean, it has the ability to cycle from mature adult stage to primordial birth stage, and back again … seemingly able to repeat the process endlessly. It’s the only species in the world capable of this sort of transformation. At this point researchers are unsure if the creature’s lifespan has any natural limit … maybe that’s why the creature is also known as the Immortal Jellyfish. Mata Mata Turtle -- In Spanish, the name “Mata Mata” translates to ‘kill kill’, and are found in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. They’re identified by their unique neck which is actually longer than its vertebra. That long neck functions as a natural snorkel, allowing the animal to keep its nose above water while staying staying on the bottom of a stream. They can also stretch their neck and open their mouth wide to create a vacuum, enabling them to swallow fish whole, since their jaws aren’t able to chew food. As adults, they’re known to measure around around 18 inches and weigh up to 33 pounds, and are readily available in the exotic pet trade. If you want one, keep few things in mind: They have a steep price tag and they’re known to live between 40 to 75 years … if you really pamper them, they might make it past 100!. Sea Sponge -- In 2016, a massive sea sponge was found off the Hawaiian coast that measured 3.5 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters high, residing over 2000 meters below the surface. That size gives it claim to be the world’s largest sponge … and possibly the oldest living animal in the world! You can see the creature in these pictures from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The images were captured by two remote operated vehicles. The research team that made the discovery hasn’t been able to determine an exact age for the sponge. However, researcher David Wagner said he’s encountered other huge coral species at these depths that can live to be a few thousand years old … with the oldest being 4500 years old!
