How to Find Architectural Ideas
Eight strategies I use to find architectural ideas. Do you find the blank page as terrifying as I do? I'm starting a new project and I thought I'd use this video to talk about how I deal with this and precisely how I search for new ideas for my architecture. I discuss in detail: - Bisociation - Trusting the design process - Embracing constraints - Inventing deadlines - Doing the opposite (anti-project) - Subtracting to solve - Stealing (like an artist) These are just a few of the design hacks I use to help grease the creative wheels and instill the confidence I need to keep moving forward. What's great is these techniques work for a whole host of disciplines and creative fields, it isn't exclusive to architecture. Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Architecture BOOK REVIEW | Operative design + Conditional Design
Reviewing two architecture books: Operative Design + Conditional Design and sharing my thoughts on the kit-of-parts design methodology they promote. Together these volumes are an excellent primer on architectural form making, iterative design, and can serve as handy portable, pocket-sized reference manuals. The diagrams are beautifully composed in full-color and the accompanying text - although brief - offers enough information to guide the reader / viewer on the book’s use. Recommended for: architecture students, teachers and professionals looking to revisit first principles or reinvent their own tired formal language. **Operative Design: A Catalogue of Spatial Verbs** http://amzn.to/2A6NRRf **Conditional Design: An Introduction to Elemental Architecture** http://amzn.to/2gYj40l Also mentioned in the video is this scholarly article by Timothy Love: “Kit-of-parts Conceptualism” (Harvard Design Magazine no. 19) http://www.harvarddesignmagazine.org/issues/19/kit-of-parts-conceptualism-abstracting-architecture-in-the-american-academy // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Dynamic architecture by David Fisher
For the past two years, David Fisher has made a name for himself by building towers in the sky. Literally. For, despite the earthly icons hes received for his architectural concept (Time Magazine Best Invention award in 2008 and a citation as Best Architect in 2008 by the Trump-supported Florida-based Developers and Builders Alliance), so far the 80-storey 1,300-foot tower exists solely in his lofty imagination

This is a first!!! After months and months of filming my life as an interior designer and entrepreneur, my clients are finally starting to expect to see a camera person with me everywhere I go!..and...I LOVE IT! Having our clients allow me to film our meetings means more opportunity for you guys to see even more of what I do and hopefully learn from! I really hope to let you guys in on EVERY aspect of my work life because I know it isn't easy deciding whether or not to become an entrepreneur, or take the plunge to enroll in design school and I figure the more insight you can get to help make that decision the better!! Why great architecture should tell a story | Ole Scheeren
For architect Ole Scheeren, the people who live and work inside a building are as much a part of that building as concrete, steel and glass. He asks: Can architecture be about collaboration and storytelling instead of the isolation and hierarchy of a typical skyscraper? Visit five of Scheeren's buildings — from a twisted tower in China to a floating cinema in the ocean in Thailand — and learn the stories behind them. Brooks + Scarpa pavilion concept captures lightning | Architecture | Dezeen
Brooks + Scarpa principals Angela Brooks and Larry Scarpa explain their concept for a public pavilion that could harness energy from lightning in our penultimate P.O.D.System Architecture movie. Los Angeles- and Florida-based architecture studio Brooks + Scarpa has created a conceptual energy-harvesting pavilion for P.O.D.System Architecture – a collaboration between Dezeen and adidas Originals. Called Vortex Generator, Brooks + Scarpa's proposed structure merges a public pavilion with a renewable energy power plant, and is intended to capture energy from the sun as well as lightning storms. “Using natural light as a tool for creating a strong architectural narrative” by Omar Gandhi
Lecture from the 7th VELUX Daylight Symposium “Healthy & climate-friendly architecture– from knowledge to practice” that took place in Berlin on 3-4 May 2017. For more information visit http://thedaylightsite.com ABSTRACT Our projects often begin with a simple local precedent or diagram, often a hip roof or gable form. The form is then extruded up or across, bent or flattened, the roof planes folded and pleated. Sculpted by conditions and use, the reconstituted adaptation is receptive and responsive in its keeping with a modest, formal lineage. Within the realm of the adapted forms lies opportunities for creating strong architectural narratives which link the unique qualities of the site with the people who inhabit them. When we write the storyline of a spatial experience, daylight or the lack thereof is used as a tool that allows us to create particular moments. Much like in film or in song, where there are both high and low points along the storyline we think not only about lighting up an entire space, but rather to highlight spaces while also considering the contrast; to use light as a tool. Omar Gandhi is a Canadian architect raised in Brampton, Ontario, currently practicing and residing in both Toronto and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Gandhi’s career began in Ontario. His early experience gave him the ability to work on a variety of projects, ranging from large commercial and institutional work in the southern regions to private residences in cottage country. Following his time in Toronto, Gandhi headed for the Maritimes. He opened his Halifaxbased design studio, Omar Gandhi Architect, in 2010 and became a registered architectural practice in 2012. In early 2016, Omar returned to his roots with the opening of his second office in downtown Toronto. Omar’s work has not gone unnoticed. Recognized as one of the world’s top 20 young architects by Wallpaper* Magazine, one of Canada’s 20 most influential people by Monocle Magazine, and as one of 2016’s ‘Emerging Voices’ by The Architectural League of New York, the sessional instructor at his Alma Mater, Dalhousie University, is most definitely leaving his mark on the architecture community.

Doing architectural concept sketch in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro
In this video, I'm bringing you a time lapse video of how I created an architectural concept sketch solely within the autodesk sketchbook pro. to elaborate on the sketch: it is a design proposal of renovating a creek in the city of Toronto, our team is focusing on improving the quality of the water by managing the stormwater via 3 steps: 1. use permeable pavings to filter rainwater 2. use soil to filtrate water collected from automobile and bike lanes 3. use freshwater mussels to further filtrate water in the creek overall impression: sketchbook pro does an excellent job at handling rapid sketches, the perspective tool is uber helpful, the copic marker presets also look great. a voiceover version of this video is coming soon, please subscribe to see more architecture related content.

Experimental Architecture for Children: Designing on a Bent Knee | Reese Rowland | TEDxMarkhamSt
Reese Rowland is as much a storyteller as he is an architect. His strength is offering more, distilling a client's vision and modus operandi into compelling, thought provoking physical narratives. Reese's designs weave a narrative that displays proudly how the craft of architecture can link time and place, space and spirit, man and environment. Reese’s dedication to crafting meaningful spaces through innovative, sustainable architecture has transformed Little Rock. His Heifer International World Headquarters design received the 2008 AIA National Institute Honor Award; one of 13 awarded nationally and was the South's first LEED Platinum building. His Arkansas Studies Institute design and Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library received a National AIA/ALA Award of Excellence, one of five awarded, honoring the best in library architecture worldwide. Arkansas Business named Reese to its list of “25 Entrepreneurs & Innovators of the last 25 years. AY Magazine named Reese to its list of “12 Powerful Men in Arkansas” for having influence, making a difference, and serving others. Arkansas Times named him as one of “50 Influential Arkansans.” He has designed Little Rock’s most recognized buildings, including Acxiom’s and The Bank of the Ozarks Headquarters, Heifer’s Education Center and Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
