The Secrets Of Quantum Physics: Let There Be Life (Full Physics Documentary) | Spark

58:50
Professor Jim Al-Khalili traces the story of arguably the most important, accurate and yet perplexing scientific theory ever: quantum physics. The story of quantum physics starts at the beginning of the 20th century with scientists trying to better understand how light bulbs work. This simple question soon led scientists deep into the hidden workings of matter, into the sub-atomic building blocks of the world around us. Here they discovered phenomena unlike any encountered before - a realm where things can be in many places at once, where chance and probability call the shots and where reality appears to only truly exist when we observe it. Albert Einstein hated the idea that nature, at its most fundamental level, is governed by chance. Jim reveals how in the 1930's, Einstein thought he'd found a fatal flaw in quantum physics. This was not taken seriously until it was tested in the 1960s. Professor Al-Khalili repeats this critical experiment, posing the question does reality really exist, or do we conjure it into existence by the act of observation? Elsewhere, we explore how the most famous law of quantum physics – The Uncertainty Principle – is obeyed by plants and trees as they capture sunlight during the vital process of photosynthesis. Could quantum mechanics explain the greatest mystery in biology - evolution? Content Provided By TVF International. High Anxieties - The Mathematics of Chaos - BBC documentary

59:01
Documentary which looks at how developments in mathematics over the past 40 years have completely changed our understanding of the fundamental nature of the world we live in. As we approach tipping points in both the economy and the climate, the film examines the mathematics we have been reluctant to face up to and asks if, even now, we would rather bury our heads in the sand rather than face harsh truths.

One of the best educational videos on Chaos Theory and Dynamic Systems that I have ever seen. Chaos is order out of disorder, and order out of non-linearity. When there is agreement within a system, the more complex a system, the better a bottom up/emergent organizational structure handles the diversity.

Pt.1/9 High Anxieties - The Mathematics of Chaos

07:28
David Malone http://golemxiv-credo.blogspot.com author of The Debt Generation, http://www.debtgeneration.org directs and presents this film, It is the first part of a documentary first shown on BBC4 Television in the UK in September 2008. The film was first broadcast 2 days after the collapse of Lehman brothers at the start of the financial crisis. It looks at the discoveries in mathematics during the 20th Century which have challenged the view that the world is an essentially knowable and therefore controllable place. The film focuses on the economy and the environment and suggests that ideas about unpredictability, the butterfly effect and tipping points, stemming from mathematics, are part of what underlie some modern anxieties about the world we live in.

BBC Our World - ROJAVA : SYRIA'S SECRET REVOLUTION

23:09
Is the Middle East’s newest country a territory called “Rojava”? Out of the chaos of Syria’s civil war, mainly Kurdish leftists have forged an egalitarian, multi-ethnic mini-state run on communal lines. But with ISIS Jihadists attacking them at every opportunity — especially around the beleaguered city of Kobane, how long can this idealistic social experiment last? From the frontlines to the refugee camps, Mehran Bozorgnia filmed in Rojava for the BBC's Our World and has gained exclusive access and a revealing snapshot of Syria’s secret revolution. What will happen next? Chaos, mathematics and lemmings | Marcus du Sautoy | TEDxWhitehall

21:35
Mathematics is our most rigorous tool for predicting the future. In some situations, mathematics really can say what will happen next. But in others, the behaviour of even very simple systems is impossible to predict. Using dice, pendulums, and a game of Lemming Musical Chairs, Professor Marcus du Sautoy gives a fun and frenetic introduction to the world of chaos theory. Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, where he holds the prestigious Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science and is a Fellow of New College. Du Sautoy has received a number of awards for his work, including the London Mathematical Society’s Berwick Prize for outstanding mathematical research and the Royal Society of London’s Michael Faraday Prize for ‘excellence in communicating science’. He has been awarded an OBE for his services to science, and was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. His mathematical research has covered a great many areas, including group theory, number theory and model theory, but he has been equally successful in his promotion of mathematics to the general public. He has published a number of best-selling, non-academic books and appears regularly on television and radio. @MarcusduSautoy This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Although Britain has some of the finest remaining castles of the medieval period, many of their secrets have been lost to time. Peter and Tom set to work straight away, learning the skills of the medieval stonemasons to construct a beautiful spiral staircase. After digging stone out of the quarry, they take it to the tracing floor, where every stone is marked out using the most closely guarded knowledge of the medieval castle builders: geometry. Then each step is hand-carved, a three-day task, before being winched into place using the treadmill-powered crane. Content licensed from Lion Tv. Any queries, please contact us at: [email protected]

Chaos Theory

04:49
Brief intro to chaos theory. Enjoy ! Info: Chaos theory contends that complex and unpredictable results occur in systems that are sensitive to small changes in their initial conditions. This small changes effect is best illustrated and commonly known as the "Butterfly Effect" which states that the flapping of a butterfly's wings in the Amazon could cause tiny atmospheric changes which over a certain time period could effect weather patterns in New York. Such systems are known as chaotic systems. Although chaotic systems appear to be random, they are not. Beneath the random behavior patterns emerge, suggesting, if not always revealing, order. Such pattern is The Golden Spiral, first discovered by Phythagoras, which is derived from the golden rectangle, a unique rectangle which has the golden ratio - phi. This pattern is observed everywhere in nature such as milk in coffee, the face of a sunflower, nautilus shell, your fingerprints, our DNA, and the shape of our galaxy the Milky Way. I call it God's signature in all of his creation :), order = love.

The Real Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins Documentary) | Timeline

Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK In 1934, Pamela Travers created the ‘practically perfect’ woman in Mary Poppins who bought order into the chaos of people’s homes. Decades later, the magical English nanny is still adored by children and parents alike. Featuring interviews with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, The Real Mary Poppins reveals the fascinating story of her creator and the truth that lies behind the enthralling fictions. The documentary draws on an extensive archive, interviews and clips from the original Mary Poppins movie and 2013’s Saving Mr Banks, which features Emma Thompson as Pamela Travers, to tell the real story of a complex woman with many contradictions. She could be vain, bossy, and fiercely independent. In short, she was Mary Poppins. And like her creation, Pamela saw – and gave others the ability to see – the magical in the commonplace, the extraordinary in the everyday. Content licensed from All3Media. 🇸🇴 Somalia: The Forgotten Story | Al Jazeera World

46:12
Somalia's modern history is a tale of independence, prosperity and democracy in the 1960s, military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s - followed by a desperate decline into civil war and chaos almost ever since. The effect of the war has been to scatter the Somali people in their millions to refugee camps and neighbouring countries - and in their hundreds of thousands to the UK, Canada and the United States. Somalia gained independence from Britain and Italy in 1960. It held free and fair elections and was ruled democratically from 1960 to 1969. Once labelled the "Switzerland of Africa", Somalia enjoyed almost a decade of democracy. The first elected president of Somalia, uniting the former British and Italian territories, was Adam Abdullah Osman who reigned for seven years. He was succeeded, freely and peacefully, by Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke. Sharmarke, however, was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards in 1969. Speaker of the Somali Parliament Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein took over, but his brief, six-day tenure was cut short by a military coup led by General Siad Barre, ending Somalia's period of democratic government. Whatever its faults - and there were many - Barre's 22-year rule effectively created modern Somalia, building one of Africa's strongest armies and massively improving the literacy of the population. Yet Barre, who gained the support of the US and the Soviet Union, the superpowers of the day, also dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, banned political parties, arrested politicians and curbed press freedom. "From then, there was a downward trend. In everything. A disintegration. And every time things were going down, the military regime was becoming more brutal and more dictatorial," says Jama Mohamed Ghalib, a former Somali government minister. But when Barre launched the Ogaden war in 1977 to take the Somali majority region from Ethiopia, it provoked serious international opposition, including that of the Soviet Union which had once supported Barre but now sided with Ethiopia. The Somali army was forced to withdraw. Opposition to the Barre government gradually increased and in May 1988, encouraged by Ethiopia, the same northern tribes - in what had once been British Somalia - rebelled against Barre's dictatorship. This provoked the full force of his military power and aggression and thousands of northern Somalis were killed. Three years later, in 1991, both the northern and southern tribes, again supported by Ethiopia, rose up against Barre. His grip on power had weakened, his former allies had abandoned him and he was finally brought down. One outcome was the northern region proclaiming its independence and declaring itself as Somaliland. It maintains its separatism today, but has hardly any international recognition. But the other long-lasting outcome was civil war, with myriad competing factions and frequent intervention by foreign powers and neighbouring countries. In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union split into several factions, one of which was Al Shabab. The radical group still controls large parts of the south of the country today. "If Siad Barre was to leave power two years earlier and said, 'Now, Somalis, you have to organise new elections and I will be happy to leave' - none of this would have happened. But when he brutalised different groups of people in different regions of the country, people were just, literally, mindlessly trying to get rid of him," says Abdi Samatar, professor of geography at the University of Minnesota. A flood of UN aid in the 1990s and 2000s led to the collapse of Somali agriculture and has reduced many farmers to poverty. At the same time, fishing by large foreign vessels in Somali waters has led to the piracy off the coast which has become synonymous in many people's minds with Somalia worldwide. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Raqqa: Inside the ruined 'capital' of the Islamic State group - BBC News

06:20
A BBC exclusive on the final stages of the battle for the Syrian city of Raqqa -- the last major stronghold of the self-styled Islamic State. The current offensive by Arab and Kurdish fighters - with American and British support - started in June. Then, I-S controlled most of Raqqa. But now only a few hundred militants hold the centre of the city. The BBC is the only broadcaster to get access. Our Middle East correspondent Quentin Sommerville and cameraman Darren Conway sent us their report - which does contain some distressing images. James Randi - Secrets of the Psychics Documentary (Full)

54:18
See 2 hours of Randi here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpeN3DVwk4Q James "The Amazing" Randi is the perfect mix of Science and Magic, a true conjurer of visual machinations that can fool our senses while, at the same time, explaining to us how our senses are fooled. In my opinion this is the best example of a "human mind debugger", he gets right into the machinations of analog tricks and sees how our brains mistakenly manifests them as a possible reality. Randi also teaches us that illusion and trickery may be comforting to the human mind, but truth is far much more wonderful as it shows us the machinations from the chaos, the sense as well as the awe in both the tricks and the real world. For several decades, Randi has gone on to expose hundreds of psychics and teach millions across the globe about how they could be fooled into believing in a system which could potentially make them vulnerable to trickery and perhaps psychical harm. Randi is not afraid to go against popular opinion, as shown in his battle against so-called psychic Uri Geller in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Randi has also gone against the bizarre practice of faith "healing" and contacting the deceased, and has exposed the cruel, callous and cynical nature of the people who claim to be performing "God's will", such as Peter Popoff. Randi has also warned us time and time again about the fraudulent practice that is homeopathic medicine and how it is essentially water solution, dished out as hocus-pocus medicine. James Randi is the founder of The James Randi Educational Foundation, an organisation that attempts to bring reason to world by luring potential psychics into a trap, baited by a million dollar prize to prove their psychic "powers". "powers" here is a kind of vague term,as Randi knows, so the tests are usually on the so-called psychic's terms. No self-acclaimed psychic has ever won the prize. Whether or not some form of psychic power exists is still an open question, however many psychics often do not properly gauge their so-called skills and instead brag about them, hence scepticism about such claims should not be so strange to their ears. Unfortunately the vast amount of psychic powers they have seem to remove all self-esteem as many psychics are often uneasy about Randi's reasonable request and attractive million dollar reward.

Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. AGSM - The secret world of animated doll videos on YouTube - BBC Trending

03:29
On YouTube young women are using the age-old technique of stop motion animation to bring their dolls to life. The American Girl brand of dolls is the most popular with AGSM (American Girl Stop Motion) videos clocking up a total of 33 million views on YouTube last year. The animations cover familiar topics like the high school prom or the first day of school but also explore serious issues like online bullying and drink driving. For Alexis, who runs the AGsmiless channel, the videos are a potential route into a career in film making. For others the pastime is less career-oriented, but no less obsessive. As photographer Ilona Szwarc's portraits show (http://www.ilonaszwarc.com/american-girls), the dolls are often customised to look like their owners, and many of the girls continue making animations well into adulthood. Origin of Life - How Life Started on Earth

49:54
Four and a half billion years ago, the young Earth was a hellish place—a seething chaos of meteorite impacts, volcanoes belching noxious gases, and lightning flashing through a thin, torrid atmosphere. Then, in a process that has puzzled scientists for decades, life emerged. But how? Mineralogist Robert Hazen as he journeys around the globe. From an ancient Moroccan market to the Australian Outback, he advances a startling and counterintuitive idea—that the rocks beneath our feet were not only essential to jump-starting life, but that microbial life helped give birth to hundreds of minerals we know and depend on today. It's a theory of the co-evolution of Earth and life that is reshaping the grand-narrative of our planet’s story. Constitutional crisis as Speaker tells MPs he could block third Brexit vote

12:57
Theresa May's attempt to get parliament to agree to her Brexit deal suffered another major setback today, after the Commons Speaker said he might stop the government from calling another meaningful vote. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) John Bercow told MPs he would not allow Theresa May to ask the Commons to vote a third time if the motion hadn't changed. The announcement took the government by surprise and means it's increasingly likely that Theresa May will ask this week's European summit for a long extension to Britain's exit date. ------- Watch more of our explainer series here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...
