Nirmalya Kumar has taught at Harvard Business School, IMD-International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is currently a Professor of Marketing and Co-Director of Aditya Birla India Centre at London Business School. Kumar has served as a consultant to over 50 Fortune 500 Companies, worked on the board of five Indian firms, and has published six books -- including, most recently, India Inside: The emerging innovation challenge to the West. In 2011, Thinkers50 named him number 26 of the “50 most influential management gurus.” Dr. Nirmalya Kumar is Member – Group Executive Council at Tata Sons. He reports directly to the Chairman of the $100 billion plus Tata group and is responsible for group strategy. Previously, he was professor of marketing at the London Business School and also taught at Columbia Business School, Harvard Business School, IMD (Switzerland) and Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management). Dr. Kumar has written seven books, including Marketing as Strategy and India Inside. He has also published several articles in Harvard Business Review and many other leading academic journals. As a consultant, he has worked with more than 50 Fortune 500 companies in 60 different countries as well as served on several boards of directors. Lucas Conley notes tighter controls on branding in European programming, but in Asia, luxury brands reign supreme. Topic: International Perspectives on Branding Lucas Conley: I've noticed the different attitudes. Certainly, one of the things about Europe that's worth noting is that they're passing some big new rules over there that are kind of gating advertisers out of certain content, product placement for instance. There's a new law passed over in the EU that basically requires before and after programs and during commercial breaks on television that the product placements are revealed so you know they're being pitched as opposed to just organically in the script. In the U.K. the media minister there has said he'll never allow product placement in British programming so there's a different attitude in Europe towards marketing but it's also on the street. If you talk to people in England, there seems to be a little more tolerance for it. There's kind of an attitude of it's not affecting me as much as I think in the U.S. there's a little more of a knee-jerk reaction when people hear about some of the marketing that's going on out there in terms of the new technologies or new philosophies in marketing. In Asia that's another community entirely in terms of how marketing is working right now. The status of certain brands there is higher than anywhere else in the world, especially luxury in China right now, certainly in Japan, in order to identify yourself in a community either as a person who's coming up in China with a new business, an entrepreneur, you get the Lexus or you get the new car or you get the new Louis Vuitton purse. These are status symbols. They just opened a new Ritz Carlton in I think it was Hong Kong and one of the reviewers' comments when he stayed there a night was that the logo was everywhere and unlike in the U.S. this logo was stamped on the box that held the remote control. And the idea there was that the logo, that status, that exterior symbol, is very important in Asia to the degree that you'll find certain products like lingerie or cleaning products that you don't see publicly don't do very well there in comparison to the rest of the world because people think why would I invest in this luxury good, Victoria's Secret or Lush bath products, if my neighbors don't know that I use it? Where is the status? What-- And what's the use for this brand for me? So that is kind of another shade of how marketing is used globally.   Recorded on: 7/23/08

Nambiar Divya SME E-Brand Management in India: Strategic and Operational Perspectives Supervisor: Dr Peter Reeves Electronic media is an ideal environment for the small and medium enterprises (SME) to build and develop brands, and as such e-branding in the SME sector is a contemporary area of discussion. SME branding is in its infancy stage and there has been limited research in this area despite its noteworthy contributions to the developing economies. The main objective of this research study is to develop a holistic model of e-brand management in the fashion sector of Indian SMEs. Other objectives are to identify how the e-brand is managed from a strategic and operational perspective, and how successfully are the components of an SME e-brand managed. The study also considers how effectively the challenges of e-branding are addressed and potentially overcome by Indian SMEs. The proposed research methodology will be conducted by using three sources of data (i.e. websites, social media and semi structured interviews) based on 20 SMEs in Bangalore, India. The study will develop a framework of e-brand management within SMEs. Hi, I'm a current student at NYU's Masters of Science in Integrated Marketing. Today I want to take you through a quick student's perspective of the program. This is ideal for those thinking about going back to school -- grad school style with an emphasis in marketing! And my apologies this isn't a high tech video -- I know I'm marketing professional -- but working full time with classes part time while in finals mode -- well this is what I can offer for now. First, let's take a look at the program. The main difference of this program and a MBA is that all of these grad level classes focus on marketing. It focuses marketing as a key element of business to support a company's overall growth. Since business strategy, growth and innovation is so well integrated into all of these classes -- students consider this degree to be the fast track to CMO! But a quick disclaimer that I'm not promising this and neither is NYU. A look at the curriculum -- everyone is required to take a list of core courses including Finance, campaign management, strategic planning, digital marketing and management. Now some of you might have some or none of this experience already but this is a great start to the program and important for our careers. After your core courses you get to pick from a variety of classes that are categorized into 3 concentrations: brand management, digital marketing or marketing analytics. Some of these classes overlap and it's great to have the option to emphasize on a concentration. And if you don't you want, it's ok -- you have time and professors to help you out. And the final semester of the course is capstone -- a full business plan that hopefully combines everything you've learned from previous classes. On to some pictures -- the NYU continuing ed school is in Midtown Manhattan on 42nd St between 5th and 6th avenue. Or for those of you not familiar with the city, it is between Grand Central Station and East of the famous Times Square. The location is convenient especially for those working and the building has a lot of resources for students such as a public lounge area for before and after class. And a place to buy snacks for those interning and working during the day -- get used to granola bars, coffee and some places for food. Onto the classrooms - well it's a classroom. There's not much to say except the core class will be about 30-40 students and concentration courses can be as few as 8 students. So all these classes are a great size to have student participation and great conversations. And here's just a snapshot of computer labs and libraries to use. As a NYU student you get to use all the NYU libraries. When it comes learning, learning in grad school is legit. Like I said classroom lectures discuss what's happening today. For example I follow a professor's twitter feed on what's happening and bring my point of view on some of these articles to classes. There are also guest speakers and events to learn from and also most student work -- they find this very useful because they can apply learnings right away, in the real life. My favorite part of the program is the network of professors and students. In New York, the student population is very diverse. People are motivated, well-connected -- they appreciate marketing, they are experienced and of course, we're smart. And you cannot forget that the program is in New York City. It is a huge advantage. It's the advertising capital of the world and offers endless opportunities in the professional space. Plus you can even enjoy the view of from the classroom. And that's what I call multi-tasking. Domenico De Sole is chairman of Tom Ford International, the menswear brand that now includes beauty, accessories, fragrance and footwear. He is a lawyer by training, but made the transition to the fashion business when Gucci -- one of his clients -- hired him to join the company. That was in 1984. Over the next 20 years until his departure from Gucci in 2004, he engineered a remarkable turnaround, saving the company from hostile suitors and acquiring such key brands as Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. Indeed, in the fashion world, the standard phrase for managing a successful turnaround has become "doing a Gucci."
