Hawkeye technique for building right product by Ankur Sambhar

30:06
We all know the importance of validating a feature before committing to getting it built. Validating assumptions help in avoiding the most frustrating and common problem – building something that nobody wants. However, validation is easier said than done. Building the right feature before we think of building the feature right is the key. Being Agile, we always try to leverage the quick feedback loop and adapt based on the end-user feedback. That’s good but it should not be used to validate the assumptions and that too after implementing a feature based on that assumption. It’s very expensive smile A more powerful and productive technique is to leverage Specification-by-example in defining and discovering requirements collaboratively with end-user, even before start working on the feature. This talk will focus on highlighting key aspects of effectively adopting SBE technique based on my own experience leveraging it successfully over and over again. It not only helps in grooming the feature requirement to tell a clear , simple and compelling story but it also helps in removing what is not needed. Building A Block Wall

20:08
If you would like to know the cost of this block wall please visit our Patreon page http://bit.ly/ecpatreon There is something mesmerizing about watching a mason build a block wall. There is something about the way they lay that mud on the block, and how smooth and natural they make it happen. Masonry is a classic example of something that looks a lot easier than it actually is. The weight of the blocks, the task of balancing mud on the trowel, and the mandatory precision make this is a really challenging trade - at least if you want to do it at a high level. The good news is that the process is simple and if you have some time and patience, anyone can learn it and make a nice product. I would recommend starting on a smaller size job though! In this video we cover the entire process of building a block wall. This project starts at the footing excavation and rebar placement, and finishes with grouting the new 8ft tall, 1350 ft long wall. These masons did a great job on this wall, and we are quite pleased. On any job of this size there will be some speed bumps, but this crew handled everything with professionalism and mutual respect. The Art of Building a Roadmap - Atlassian Summit 2016

45:02
Sherif Mansour Principal Product Manager, Atlassian The process of defining a roadmap is arguably one of the most difficult but important things a product manager has to do. Far too often roadmaps are built without the complete picture in mind, without the right timing, in silos, or are misdirected. How then can we ensure we’re doing it right? Is there really such a thing as an agile roadmap? This talk will draw from lessons learnt building product to provide practical tips and techniques enabling you to understand roadmap inputs, plan with different perspectives in mind, optimise for learning, communicate and set roadmap goals as well as find agility when the landscape around you changes. Building Products AI-First

27:27
Over the last 5-10 years our computer's ability to understand our voice commands and pictures have made dramatic leaps forward - from barely being able to understand simple commands (or different accents) to comprehending complex commands or questions, the way we interact with computers is changing dramatically. And it's all down to machine learning. Machine learning has been around for a while but over the last 5-10 years three things have come together to provide a breakthrough in their abilities : the algorithms have gotten better by modelling the human brain, there is a lot more data available to train these systems, and more raw computing power than ever before to bring it all together. This combination changes how we develop products from endless if/else statements to simple algorithms with deep learning systems behind them. So what does that mean for us as product managers? In this in-depth talk from Mind the Product San Francisco 2017 Aparna Chennapragada, Product Director and Technical Assistant to the CEO at Google, unpacks N ideas on how this will change how we think about products and experiences. Building the TotalBoat Sport Dory: Episode 35 - Varnish

21:55
It's time to Varnish our TotalBoat Sport Dory and we're gonna do things a little differently this time. We're gonna varnish our Dory upside down! If we had put caps on the sheer we would be able to varnish the guards, right over the caps and then down inside the inwhales. But with the sheer open and the frames exposed, we run a big risk of having varnish run down between the two into the interior of the boat. So we're going to hang our Sport Dory upside down from the overhead and let gravity work for us. We need to sand the guards, top of the sheer plank and the inwhales with 220 sandpaper to get them ready for varnishing. We want to focus on the edges and round those out a little bit so they will better hold varnish and not chop off later on. For our first coat we're going to use TotalBoat Wood Sealer. It's a varnish primer that will help fill the grain, seal the wood fibers and level surface to get us ready for our Varnish. We will let the Wood Sealer dry overnight and then sand again with 220 paper before applying our TotalBoat Gleam 2.0 Marine Spar Varnish. While brushing on this second coat we need to keep an eye on how much varnish we are putting on our brush and applying to the boat so that we don't get any runs. We want to make sure to tip the varnish as we go to help us achieve a smooth level finish. Become a member of the Tips Team!! What are the right questions to ask myself when building a product?

01:24
Jessica Mah, CEO and Co-Founder of InDinero explains why passion is so important when building a startup and product and some questions to ask yourself before starting. As Product Architect and CEO, Jessica loves helping entrepreneurs run better businesses. She started her first company when she was 13 and has been featured on Forbes' 30 Under 30 and Inc's 30 Under 30 lists. Transcript: What are the right questions to ask myself when building a product? Some of the questions I’m asking myself when I’m evaluating a business idea, is this something that I can pour my heart and soul into for the next ten or twenty years? Because building a startup is really hard and I just want to make sure I’m passionate about what I am doing. With InDinero I knew that I was going to be doing this for a very long time. I worked on other business ideas that I wasn’t super passionate about. I didn’t ask myself that question and I regret that, so I would say that’s the most important thing. Another question I would ask is how big is the market for this? How many people actually need this? I thought about many ideas as genius but it doesn’t help that many people. With InDinero I liked the business idea because all of my entrepreneur friends can use it. Every single business could use what I’m selling. Whereas some other niche products out there is really hard to find the right people who might actually by that. That would be the second most important thing. Also, is this an idea that I can get all my employees excited about? Because they got to be bought in just as much as I am. Those are the three big questions I would ask. Is Stealth Seminar Right For You? Product Overview - Building an Online Business Ep. 31

15:40
Is Stealth Seminar right for you and your business? Watch now to learn about Stealth Seminars powerful feature set that you can use to increase your sales. So, a few episodes back, I did a big comparison between Everwebinar, Webinar Jam, and Stealth Seminar. Comparing Stealth Seminar against the other two, for a fully automated solution, I thought Everwebinar would be the winner.   This video comes just a few months later after abandoning Everwebinar all together in favor of ClickFunnels. Just a few short weeks later, it was clear ClickFunnels didn’t have the feature set that I needed.   The big issue with these other solutions? Mobile. The webinars didn’t format properly on mobile devices. This big issue brought me to stealth seminar. Here’s a quick run though of what makes Stealth Seminar so great.   First, they do all the hard work for you. I barely lifted a finger to get my webinar setup. I filled out their form, told them where my landing page was, and they did the rest. They recreated the landing page on their server with a countdown timer and dynamic date element, set up my offer to drop at the right time during the webinar, and encoded the video I uploaded to properly run on multiple devises. After testing the webinar, everything worked perfectly the first-time round. The support rep I worked with was very patient with the steady streams of edits I requested and installed all of the tracking codes needed (in retrospect I should have just done Google Tag manager).   All in all, in terms of ease of use and setup A+. There is a catch though. It’s an issue that has been somewhat fixed but still lags behind other solutions out there; the design. The backend of the site and the webinar rooms themselves feel out dated and I’ve had clients refuse to use it because of its aesthetics or lack thereof. ---- Why You Should Keep Watching: Aspiring Entrepreneur Aspire = Hustle + Grind Hustle, Grind, Hard work - These are all things we as entrepreneurs claim we want to do, but what does that actually look like? As much as we don't like to admit it, scrolling through inspirational quotes on Instagram and buying the latest book or course isn't going to get us to where we want to go. My Channel is all about about documenting the unglamours journey of the "Hustle + Grind + Hard Work", the true essence of being an entrepreneur. I haven't made it yet. I'm just like you putting in the work to build the business I love. If you’re a hard working entrepreneur who's grinding to build the business you love, subscribe. We'll build our dreams together. Building an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) II

38. Building an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) II // Wood has been cut, glued and screwed. The spray gun has made and appearance. Hardware has been fitted. It's time for the BIG REVEAL! → SUBSCRIBE for a NEW EPISODE every WEDNESDAY: http://www.DevelopmentThatPays.com/-/subscribe I don't think I need to say it, but the point of the exercise was not to encourage you to take up carpentry :) No, the point of the exercise was to - hopefully - uncover something useful about the process of creating an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Ideally, something that would be just applicable in my "day job": software development. And I did learn! In ways that surprised me. My experience of Step 6 - the final build of my MVP - was especially... WEIRD. Enjoy the video! Remember to comment, like and share :) LINKS -- Part I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIe8Xt9nByY Music: 260809 Funky Nurykabe: ccmixter.org/files/jlbrock44/29186 Wood has has been cut, glued and screwed. The spay gun has made an appearance. Hardware has been fitted. It's time to reveal the "MDF MVP" Hi this is Gary. Welcome to Development That Pays And welcome back to the the second part of the Minimum Viable Product build. If you missed Part 1, you should find a link on or around this video. I don't think I need to say it, but the point of the exercise was not to encourage you to take up carpentry. No, the point of the exercise was to, hopefully, uncover something useful about the process of creating an MVP. Something that would be just applicable in my "day job": software engineering. I did learn. In ways that surprised me. My experience of Step 6 - the final build of my MVP - was especially... weird. Step 1 ---- This was the 'back of a fag packet' level of design. Compare this with other things I'd done in SketchUp, and you'll see that I was holding back, trying to me "minimal" Step 2 ----- Again, so minimal by my standards. I even went as far as missing out one of the shelves! In terms of viable... I knew the printer would fit - I'd taken the dimensions directly from SketchUp But there was an 'unknown unknown' (I'm sure you spotted it. But I didn't) The damn paper feed! In the language of software development: the prototype passed the "unit tests" of: wide enough high enough deep enough. But it failed the 'behavioural tests' of "as a user, I must be able to load A4 paper" "as a user, I must be able to print on A4 paper... and catch the paper as it comes out of the printer" Step 3 ---- I thought long and hard about how get around the paper problem... ... but I wasn't happy with any of them. So it was out with the old (printer) and in with the new. Think that's what the Lean community would refer to as a 'pivot'. Step 4 ----- This second prototype served a couple of purposes: match dimensions of the new printer extend the "prototyping" to include the wheels (which I did with four sticks of wood!) And to check the overall height, to make sure it would fit under the table. These were all about ensuring that the thing would be viable. I also uncovered another "unknown unknown": the difficulty in seeing the printer's display panel. Step 5 ---- Spet 5 took me back to SketchUp for the final time. Although the eagle eyed among you may have spotted that I snuck in an extra shelf. What can I say. It's not easy for me to me "Minimal" At this point you might be thinking: 'Hold on a second, this is just prototyping ' Yeah. I had that thought too. I think we're okay: the ideas of 'minimal' and 'viable', I really took them to heart. They became my 'prime directives'; I was much more focussed than usual on creating something that would be viable. And I tried (not always successfully) not to embellish. So, yes, it's prototyping. But it's been prototyping for an MVP, rather than for a PRODUCT, And the two feel different. Talking of feeling different. Time to Step 6. Step 6 ---- Okay. This was weird. I've built a lot of stuff. But this build, it was different. It FELT different. I once heard someone talk about operating as if you have 'one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake'. That's how it usually feels when I'm building something. Guess is because I'm building... and designing... and wondering-if-I'm-building-thing-right-thing the whole time. Not this time. I just got on and built it. Just like that. Forward gear all the way. I suppose with a couple of prototypes behind me - and 'just' an MVP in front of me (rather than an must-be-completely-perfect-final-product) - means there's really nothing left to worry about. It's an incredibly satisfying mode to get in to. The Reveal --- it's time for the big reveal. Viable It 'works' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_sL_tOu2Xc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxjbxk8dUqI

Ben Hall - "Building Startups and Minimum Viable Products"

47:24
DevDay (http://devday.pl), 20th of September 2013, Kraków Ben Hall - "Building Startups and Minimum Viable Products" Description: "Everyone has that one idea that could be the next big thing. However, starting is the hardest part. This session will help attendees overcome this by providing practical and real world advice on how they can take a high level idea and turn it into reality focusing at both the product and technical level. Forming the presentation around Lean Startup techniques, Ben will initially cover how to test the concept with potential users to gauge interest based on well-known techniques and his experience of building products and startups. Covering wireframes, initial customer acquisition and how to ask the right questions, attendees will understand the most effective ways to test their ideas. Once you've found the next big thing, you'll need to build it. Continuing the lean startup focus, Ben will describe the tools and techniques he has used to speed up time to market and identifying the right thing to build instead of just how to build it. Once launched, it's down to improvements. This section focuses on measuring users behaviour and engagement enabling you to identify areas that are working but more importantly the areas users are having problems. By the end of the presentation, participants will have key insights into the startup world and how they can go from vision to reality. The aim is to give people the tools and techniques required to go off and implementing the ideas they already have at the back of their mind."

NoVA UX Sep'15: Building the Right Product - How to Approach the Discovery Process

48:51
Note: this event was originally streamed on Periscope using an iPhone - our apologies for the audio/video quality but attendees asked if we could post the original video. Original event: http://www.meetup.com/nova-ux/events/... ---- About the Talk The reach of UX goes far beyond just a few sketches and wireframes. For us at NotionTheory, UX means delving into the roots of a company to understand who their customers are, the problem they’re experiencing, and how they’re solving that problem now. All of this is a precursor to even beginning to understand what the right solution may be. It’s a multi-faceted discipline requiring you to go beyond the pages of an application and holistically dive into the behaviors of your stakeholders. In this talk, you’ll learn about the many UX lessons we’ve taken away in our first year with NotionTheory. We’ve helped 15 companies build and deliver their products to market; each time working to launch the smallest possible solution that delivers tangible value to the customer. We’ll be pulling back the curtain on everything from our sales process to our operations to reveal how we’ve helped clients launch solutions across every major platform and industry. About the Speaker Kristian Bouw is a 2x startup founder, self-taught designer, and self-taught developer. He is currently the founder at NotionTheory where he helps companies build and launch their web or mobile products to market in just 4 weeks. Building Trust With Your B2B Customers Through Advisory - Blake Morgan

03:13
Let’s face the truth: today’s B2B customers just don’t trust you. In fact, a recent study found that 59% of buyers would rather do research online to avoid interacting with a human sales rep who pushes their own agenda and doesn’t listen. B2B customers also have more anxiety about their purchases than ever before and are constantly questioning if a purchase will ruin their professional career or if there is something else that would be a better purchase. They often aren’t confident they are buying the right product at the right price to help their company. However, don’t think that B2B is dead! There’s a way to move past this anxiety and distrust, and it comes from being an advisor to your customers. In fact, a study in the Harvard Business Review found that listening to buyers and taking a proactive approach can increase purchase ease by 86%. It all comes back to building trust and establishing a true relationship with customers. One of the fastest ways for sales reps to build that trust is by focusing on helping their prospects rather than just selling to them. A LinkedIn survey found that B2B buyers are five times more likely to engage with a salesperson who provides new insights about their business or industry. Think of it like walking into a clothing store: would you want to make a purchase if you were ignored by the salesperson or shown the same item as everyone else in a pushy way? You would likely prefer to make a purchase if the salesperson took time to ask what you were shopping for and then brought out a few options that were selected just for you to match your style and buying needs. That salesperson listened to you and provided more than just an article of clothing. The same principle applies in B2B. In today’s B2B world, things are simply becoming commodities, and there is too much stuff that’s exactly the same. What will make you stand out isn’t your product, but rather the services you offer around that product. Make B2B personal by listening, observing, and understanding your customer’s personal goals and emotions. Customers want more than just a transaction—they want a real experience they know they can trust. Take the time to build trust in your B2B experience, both online and in person. Being proactive and providing personalized recommendations to customers will put you in an advisory role to gain their trust and build a strong, loyal customer relationship. -------------------------------------- BLAKE'S TAKE Blake's Take features content on customer experience and includes regularly updated educational content. An Innovative Approach - Building with Bowens

03:12
The strong relationships that Bowens Account Managers have with builders means that they can do a lot more than just take orders. Account Managers provide valuable support to a builder’s business by keeping everyone up to date with new and innovative products, as well as coming up with solutions to a wide range of challenges. A great example of this is with Jason Blake, Account Manager at Port Melbourne and Luke Aaron, Director of Portside Building. For over five years, Jason has been assisting Luke to find the right products. We caught up with them both at a Portside job in Yarraville. This build is a high end, architecturally designed, residential home and one that didn’t come with a lot of detailing in the design. Luke has been able to help the owners, often with Jason’s assistance, and suggest products that are new and innovative to the market. Luke explains that; “As a builder, it's always difficult to find the time to get out there and find the new products that are coming to the market. That's where Bowens and Jason have been great for us because they have taken care of a lot of the legwork. Jason has introduced us to products that we didn't know were out there. We haven't got the time to do that sort of ‘sit and search’ when we're active on-site. The partnership with Bowens is very beneficial to our business.” One example of a new product being used that solved a problem for Luke was Ezipier which was the Bowens Product in Focus for July and August. The original design was for stumps, building on a traditional bearer and joist setup. However, this would have limited access to the rear of the site, where a pool and entertainment area were also being built. As Luke says; “Jason introduced us to the Ezipier system, which gave us the ability to pour pads of concrete and still get access to the back of the site to carry out other slab work and tasks that needed to be done.” The other advantage of the Ezipier system is that because Yarraville has a highly reactive soil base, if there's any future adjustments to be made, they can be achieved via the adjustable pier head. “It just looked like an opportunity to future-proof any movement or settling going forward.” says Luke. John Heidemann, Carpenter at Portside Building says: “I'd recommend them over stumps any day. They are just a lot easier and cleaner for us to work with.” Another product exclusive to Bowens that Jason introduced to Luke was UrbanEco, a lightweight cladding from Weathertex. Luke says that; “UrbanEco had a lot of advantages as it is going to be a more durable product with less maintenance and is also easy to install. It can be pre-painted in the factory which eliminates all our site work in the painting.” John explains that; “UrbanEco saved us a lot of time. There's no padding, no sanding, no undercoating. We did prime the ends, just to weather-seal it, but once it's up, it's up, and you can walk away.” Whilst UrbanEco might have looked more expensive on paper than traditional timber weatherboards, Luke said that once all factors were taken into consideration, including the savings of being able to remove costly scaffolding earlier, it was much the same. “It's got a huge benefit to the owners, as far as continued maintenance. It really is a low-maintenance product that they shouldn't have to worry about for quite a few years,” says Luke. Jason also introduced several other innovative products to Luke that he had not used before. These included MULTIPANEL custom-made shower bases and the Enviroseal ProctorWrap. Jason enjoys working with builders who are open to new ideas. He says that; “With this job being so successful, Luke’s asked us to get in at design stage of one of his next jobs to see what other innovative products we can offer.” Next time you are talking to your Bowens Account Manager, make sure you ask them what innovative products are new to the market that can help you build better with Bowens. Bowens is constantly researching, testing and looking for new and innovative products which are the future of building. If you have a project that you are working on that you would like us to feature, or if you would just like to know more about what’s new in the Building Industry, talk to your Bowens Account Managers today. We are always here to help solve everyday problems and want to ensure that we support builders by discovering new and innovative products. http://bowens.com.au
