Writing good quality code is an entirely different story. How can we measure quality of design? How do we know we're doing the right set of things that will leads us to a better design? In this session we will learn about some core software design principles that help programmers everyday. Instead of talking about theory and what we could potentially do, we will take on multiple examples, discuss the solution, pros and cons, and bring out key design principles that have an impact on the outcome.

Creating Consistent Experiences With Design Principles
Speaker: Adam Connor By understanding what principles are and where they come from we can move beyond the lists of best practices and heuristics we’re all familiar with and create unique, consistent experiences. Inconsistency is one of the most common points of breakdown and frustration in the interactions and experiences we have. Whether we’re interacting with other people, applications, our bank, our doctor, our government, anyone, we form expectations and understandings of what someone or something will do based on our previous experiences and their past behaviors. When something happens that doesn’t fit with those expectations–that seems out of character–we’re caught off guard. What do we do next? What should we expect now? Principles act as rules that guide how we think and act. Formed by our motivations, values and beliefs, we use them as “lenses” through which we examine information in order to make decisions on what to do. And because of their persistent influence on our behavior, they influence other’s views and expectations of us. Using these same kinds of constructs throughout the design process we can design interactions and consistent behaviors that set and live up to expectations for our audiences.

Visual Design Principles: 5 things you should know to create persuasive content
Read a case study of how visual design principles work here http://blog.visme.co/data-storytelling-tips/ To communicate visually, you have to understand how humans absorb visual information. A problem with visually designed content is that people too often create visuals for the camera and not for humans. It may surprise you to know that people do not process images like a camera. Your brain has a 2% field of vision vs. the 180% field of view of the camera. The camera's large field of view means that it’s able to get all the information in front of it in one go. Visual design principles tell us the human eye processes visual content by rapid eye movements called Saccades. Saccades are when the eye is quickly moving around an environment grabbing small pieces of information to build the bigger picture. Your brain thinks it sees a complete image, but in reality, it’s absorbing small pieces of it. So the question is HOW does visual design for the human eye? Or more importantly; how do we create content that will encourage people to take the action we want? That’s exactly what I’m going to go through in this video: You’ll learn: 1. How to establish your focal point for the reader 2. How to differentiate between areas of importance 3. You’ll also learn how patterns are your friend 4. The effect of simplifying your focus 5. And finally, you’ll learn how to create subtle interactivity that draws the reader towards key areas of your content." Now, let's go over the steps in the visual design principles

The 10 Principles for Good Design - Dieter Rams | Basics of Design
Dieter Rams is one of the most prolific designers of our and time and has really helped to shape the face of good design. In this video I cover his famous 10 Principles for Good Design. Good design is innovative The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself. Good design makes a product useful -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it. Good design is aesthetic -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful. Good design makes a product understandable -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It clarifies the products structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory. Good design is unobtrusive -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the users self-expression. Good design is honest -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept. Good design is long-lasting -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years - even in todays throwaway society. Good design is thorough down to the last detail -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer. Good design is environmentally friendly -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimises physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product. Good design is as little design as possible -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Less, but better - because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity. This presentation was recorded at GOTO London 2016 http://gotoldn.com Eoin Woods - CTO at Endava ABSTRACT Security is an ever more important topic for system designers. As our world becomes digital, today’s safely-hidden back office system is tomorrow’s public API, open to anyone on the Internet with a hacking tool and time on their hands. So the days of hoping that security is someone else’s problem are over. The security community has developed a well understood set of principles used to build systems that are secure (or at least securable) by [...] Download slides and read the full abstract here: https://gotocon.com/london-2016/presentations/show_talk.jsp?oid=7928 https://twitter.com/gotoldn https://www.facebook.com/GOTOConference http://gotocon.com

Patterns, Properties and Principles of Good UX Design
Patterns! They’re everywhere and knowing how to use them effectively in a UX context can mean the difference between successful customer/user engagements and project FAIL! Using Christopher Alexander’s “Fifteen Properties of Wholeness” as a philosophy and model for good design and pattern usage, I will explain how these properties strengthen our understanding of patterns and helps to facilitate good UX design and good design practices. Using examples found in nature, architecture, music, art, language, writing, and UX, we will put Alexander’s properties to the test and see how they appear across many diverse landscapes and how they work to fully and naturally engage the end user, regardless of device or interface and even the lack thereof. Alexander’s “Properties” remind us that humans seek continuity and understanding through patterns, regardless of context. Recognizing this provides valuable insight for the UX practitioner and shows that even in the midst of changing trends and technology some of the most important and fundamental aspects of our work stay the same. For more on this topic and other important fundamental UX and design ideas, check out my new UX book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ALMQ564 Thanks! Scott Faranello

The are three main design principles when is comes to designing any 3 dimentional space. these Continuity, Unity and Rhythm. These are very ambiguous terms and are difficult to describe let alone explain to a student. Never the less understanding How these they principles work in harmony with each other and when used in conjunction with Bubble or Functional diagrams they do help guide the students to obtain viable and practical design solution.

SOLID Design Principles Introduction
In this video we will discuss 1. SOLID Acronym and Introduction 2. SOLID design principles 3. Why SOLID SOLID Introduction 1. SOLID principles are the design principles that enable us manage most of the software design problems 2. The term SOLID is an acronym for five design principles intended to make software designs more understandable, flexible and maintainable 3. The principles are a subset of many principles promoted by Robert C. Martin 4. The SOLID acronym was first introduced by Michael Feathers SOLID Acronym S : Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) O : Open closed Principle (OSP) L : Liskov substitution Principle (LSP) I : Interface Segregation Principle (ISP) D : Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) Single Responsibility Principle 1. Robert C. Martin expresses the principle as, "A class should have only one reason to change” 2.Every module or class should have responsibility over a single part of the functionality provided by the software, and that responsibility should be entirely encapsulated by the class Liskov Substitution Principle 1. Introduced by Barbara Liskov state that “objects in a program should be replaceable with instances of their sub-types without altering the correctness of that program” 2. If a program module is using a Base class, then the reference to the Base class can be replaced with a Derived class without affecting the functionality of the program module 3. We can also state that Derived types must be substitutable for their base types Open/Closed Principle 1. “Software entities should be open for extension, but closed for modification” 2. The design and writing of the code should be done in a way that new functionality should be added with minimum changes in the existing code 3. The design should be done in a way to allow the adding of new functionality as new classes, keeping as much as possible existing code unchanged Interface Segregation Principle 1. “Many client-specific interfaces are better than one general-purpose interface” 2.We should not enforce clients to implement interfaces that they don't use. Instead of creating one big interface we can break down it to smaller interfaces Dependency Inversion Principle 1. One should “depend upon abstractions, [not] concretions" 2. Abstractions should not depend on the details whereas the details should depend on abstractions 3. High-level modules should not depend on low level modules If we don’t follow SOLID Principles we 1. End up with tight or strong coupling of the code with many other modules/applications 2. Tight coupling causes time to implement any new requirement, features or any bug fixes and some times it creates unknown issues 3. End up with a code which is not testable 4. End up with duplication of code 5. End up creating new bugs by fixing another bug 6. End up with many unknown issues in the application development cycle Following SOLID Principles helps us to 1. Achieve reduction in complexity of code 2. Increase readability, extensibility and maintenance 3. Reduce error and implement Reusability 4. Achieve Better testability 5. Reduce tight coupling Solution to develop a successful application depends on Architecture : choosing an architecture is the first step in designing application based on the requirements. Example : MVC, WEBAPI, MVVM..etc Design Principles : Application development process need to follow the design principles Design Patterns : We need to choose correct design patterns to build the software If you are confused on how we can apply these design principles in the application development? Don’t worry as we are going to take a look at them in greater details in the upcoming videos. In the next video we will discuss single responsibility principle in detail with a sample example.
