Catalog Backup and Restore in Lightroom
Lightroom has an inbuilt backup feature. It's strictly the catalog that's backed up, not your photos. While the timing of backups can be set easily, the rest of the settings are only available during backup. I look at all of these in the video as well as how to extract the backup and replace the main catalog file with it. My Book! How To Fix The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog Is Too New Error Message
(FREE TUTORIAL) How To Fix The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog Is Too New Error Message A number of the photographers that I assist in private one-on-one Adobe Photoshop Lightroom technical support sessions have been reporting a similar error message lately. Each of these clients reports receiving an error message that says that their Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog "cannot be opened because it is too new to be used by this version of Lightroom." Usually this error message appears a few day after installing a Photoshop Lightroom update or upgrading from an older version of the Lightroom application. Fortunately, there is a quick and easy solution to this problem. If you encounter this error message on startup then all that you need to do is to tell your computer to open this Lightroom Catalog (your .lrcat file) using the most recently installed version of the Lightroom Application. In the Mac world, this is best done by right-clicking on your .lrcat file and using the Open With command. Windows users will find the same command with a right-click although so far I have mostly seen this error on computer's running the Mac operating system. ------------ Learn Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Lightroom for Mobile, Snapseed from Google, and more with our complete video training courses at http://www.focusphotoschool.com. Automatic Backup of Lightroom Catalogs on Windows Logoff
This video explains the process I use to automatically backup my Lightroom Catalogs everytime I logoff/shut down my PC. Please note, this does have a requirement that you are running a "Pro" version of Windows as Group Policy Editor is not available in "Home versions". This enables me to turn off the warning when exiting Lightroom and not have to worry about using the built in backup. This process will work for any type of storage you may have, NAS, WIndows Share, USB HDD, Memory Card, 2nd HDD etc...... Written instructions can also be found on my Blog at http://www.craigrogers.photography/?p=1032 This is my first attempt at one of these "How To" Videos, so please forgive the slight hunting of the Auto Focus on my headshot, future videos will be shot in Manual Focus. Any questions, please feel free to comment or get in touch. Please note! Lightroom Catalogues are priceless, please be careful when following these instructions. If in doubt make a full copy of them somewhere else before you start. All of the above is something I decided to do to make my life easier and is not an Adobe process. I cannot be held responsible for any loss of data that you may have from any of this information.
Lightroom Catalog on Network Volume (Mac)
This video is a basic overview of how I managed to get around the fact you are not able to store on your Lightroom catalog on a network volume.. pretty simple solution. Corrupt RAW Files That Appear Fine On-Camera
Have you ever imported files to Adobe Lightroom, only to have them look corrupted moments later? Or perhaps the files looked fine on camera, but now when you import them they're clearly damaged? What happened? This video explores the some of the ways you might discover a corrupted file, and explains why, when Lightroom briefly shows the file as fine before the damage becomes clear, it's not actually Lightroom damaging the file. I also explain why a corrupted file may look fine in Photo Mechanic, and damaged in other applications. How I Backup My Images (Updated)
In this video I demonstrate how I go about backing up my images. Any backup strategy involving Lightroom should adhere to the following rules: 1.) Backup all images in Lightroom as well as the Lightroom Catalog 2.) Make one backup locally to a different hard drive 3.) A second backup should be offsite (the cloud) 4.) Backups should be done automatically, autonomously in the background In the video I talk about the cloud site I use: http://www.crashplan.com

How to determine which Lightroom Catalog you have open
You can create multiple Lightroom catalogs, but you can only have one catalog open at a time. It's important to know what catalog you are working in, and where that catalog is located on your computer. If you have ever opened Lightroom and discovered missing work, then you have opened the wrong or different catalog. Lightroom does not require you to save while you work, and it does not lose images or edits from previous sessions. In this short tutorial I explain how to determine what catalog you have open, how to find that catalog on your computer, and how to make sure you always open the same catalog.

Files Imported Corrupted Into Lightroom!
Don't panic! Your camera is not broken- well, most likely it is not broken. The reason for raw files showing up fine before being imported into Lightroom is as follows: * The CF card reader you used to import the files is corrupted * The raw files contain a small embedded JPEG preview picture- which is why you are able to view them in Mac's finder for example, but when imported into Lightroom, they show corrupted. The Lightroom import is displaying the actual raw file, compared to the JPEG's preview file. * Using a new CF card reader should solve the issue. * If you are in a bind, and don't have access to the original images from the memory card, then Photo Mechanic should be able to help you edit the JPEG previews (you will lose some of the dynamic range that you have in the RAW files, but in a worst case scenario, it could be a life saver). Finding Photos Removed From Lightroom Library
Finding Photos Removed From Lightroom Library Website -- WriteLighting.com Facebook -- bit.ly/WriteFB Twitter -- bit.ly/WriteTwit Instagram - bit.ly/WriteInsta Check out my website to learn more interesting stuff like this - http://writelighting.com/learn You can buy some of my fine art photos here - http://writelighting.com/wall-art Have you ever wanted to delete a photo from inside of Lightroom, but accidentally "remove" the photo instead? It's actually much easier to slip up on than you might imagine. When you go to delete a photo from your Lightroom library, theres a prompt that pops up asking if you want to delete the photo from disk (in other words your hard drive) or just remove it from your Lightroom catalog. The problem is that the default option here is to remove it from your catalog, so if you're button happy like me, then you end up removing things constantly while they just sit on your hard drive wasting space. You might say, well why not just hit undo? Sure that would work, but most of the time I never notice that I'm removing the photo from the library instead of actually deleting it. I'm usually only half paying attention when I'm culling down the photos I just imported to only the ones that really matter. Eventually it gets to a point where there's a whole slew of photos wasting valuable space on the hard drive that could've been better utilized. In the 4ish minute video above I go step by step through the (very easy) process of finding all of these photos that are removed but not deleted. The thing is, they are still siting in your Lightroom folders on the hard drive even though they don't show up anymore. If you go into the import screen and click on your whole Lightroom catalog as your source folder, you can sort through all of the photos in your catalog to pick out the ones that are missing. Of course, sorting through tens or hundreds of thousands of photos would be a huge pain, but if you click on the "new photos" option at the top, it will only show non imported photos. These photos that show up are all of the photos that you've removed from your library, but never actually deleted. From here you can reimport them if you accidentally deleted them or actually delete them for real this time. Just right click on the photo and click show in finder (mac). That should pop up the photo in your actual file system on your computer so all you have to do is click delete. This is much more convenient than having to sort through folders and folders of photos just to find those few photos you don't need anymore. Anyway, that's the gist of it, if you need a visual representation, click on the video to see what I mean. The process is fairly straight forward. This helped me out, but if you've got an even easier way, or perhaps just an alternative that you like better, let me know in the comments. I love seeing other peoples perspectives and learning something new myself ^_^.
