AUSTIN, TEXAS — Intoxication and jealousy proved a deadly combination when a college student beat his live-in boyfriend to death early Friday morning in Austin, Texas.
According to the arrest affidavit, Bryan Canchola, 20, fought with his boyfriend Stephen Sylvester, 18, at GrandMarc Austin Apartments in downtown Austin, where they shared the apartment with a roommate who tried to save Sylvester's life.
The roommate, who does not wish to be identified, told police the couple returned home around 3:30 a.m. after a night of drinking. Canchola accused Sylvester of cheating and their argument escalated into a fight. The roommate intervened when the fight became increasingly violent and found Sylvester bleeding profusely.
The roomate drove Sylvester to the University Medical Center Brackenridge. Sylvester left the hospital suddenly without having been treated, leaving the roommate frantically searching for him. Fearing he had gone back to Canchola, the roommate called 9-1-1.
Canchola also called 9-1-1 to report that Sylvester was in critical condition. Sylvester succumbed to his injuries shortly after being brought back to the hospital. An autopsy revealed that Sylvester suffered bleeding on the brain and a neck fracture from being strangled in addition to injuries he received in the initial altercation.
Canchola was booked into Travis County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
