IDEAL In-Sure® Push-In Wire Connectors

03:31
Push-In style wire connectors are becoming more popular with contractors versus the traditional twist on wire connectors that we have used for many years. UL puts these connectors through the exact same tests as traditional twist on wire connectors, so a push-in connector can be used anywhere a traditional twist-on would be used. You know if it’s IDEAL, it’s a quality connector and the In-Sure™ Push-In Wire Connector is no exception. These connectors save time and improve productivity while perfecting electrical connections. The color-coded, clear polycarbonate housing allows for visual verification of every connection. The ergonomic design of the In-Sure is easier to grip which means more comfortable push in connections. They are perfect for OEM lighting manufacturing, prefabricated wiring systems or almost any branch circuit wiring application. The low the insertion force makes it easy to push the solid or stranded wire fully into the connector quickly completing the job. (Connector picture on back of P2854 sales sheet on screen while saying the above) In-Sure Push-In connectors are UL Listed, CSA Certified, and rated to 600 V and 105 degrees Celsius for use on building wire, and 1000 V in signs and lighting fixtures. The connectors fit any combination of number 12 to 18 gauge solid or stranded copper conductors; however, like a standard twist-on connector, push-ins should not be used on aluminum wiring. In-Sure Connectors come in seven different models and colors from a 2-port model all the way up to an 8-port model. There is also a 3-port blue model 39 for 10 gauge solid or stranded wire. Regular Push-ins connectors are rated to 20 amps the model 39 is rated to 30 amps. (Picture of catalog page on screen) To install the In-Sure connector first make sure the wiring you are using complies with all applicable electrical codes and turn off the power. Strip the conductors one half an inch exposing the bare conductors. Grip the wire firmly and fully push the conductor into an open port. Use only one conductor per port. You can verify the conductor is fully inserted to the back of the connector through the clear polycarbonate housing. The connector is reusable on solid wires of the same wire gauge or larger. If you are reusing the connector cut and re-strip the conductors, then reinsert into the connector. In order to remove a wire, pull and twist the wire back and forth until the wire is removed. (Close up shots of stripping conductors and inserting and removing them in connector.) In-Sure Wire connectors should not be reused on stranded wire as strands maybe damaged or break free and become lodged inside the connector. One of the benefits of the In-Sure connector that Electrical contractors like is the fact you can add a conductor to the connection if there is an open port without having to completely remake the connection. Additionally, the convenient check port allows for easy testing of the connection without removing the connector. The 2, 3, and 4 port connectors will also pass through a traditional knockout on the side of an electrical box. #RonKipperDatacomm

Custom Cables & Guide to Crimping Dupont PCB Interconnect Cables

09:28
This is a very quick video guide to working with custom PCB connectors. I recently had to make a custom connector for my Raspberry PI, which has a bank of male headers. I looked at a few different options and in the end I decided I would invest in a crimp tool to create my own custom cables. While the experiences are still fresh in my mind I decided I would make this video in case that it will be of benefit as an introductory guide to others who are trying to do the same sort of thing. The video will discuss regular ribbon cables, fixed length pre-crimped cables, and custom crimped cables. I will also give a guide to how to crimp 0.1" male and female PCB interconnect cables and describe what a proper crimp connector should look like. See: www.derekmolloy.ie

Cord Drop Plugs and Connectors with Switch-Ratings from MELTRIC

03:06
Meltric’s switch-rated plugs and receptacles are the superior choice for power cord drops in your facility. They protect workers from potential exposure to electrical hazards when connecting and disconnecting electrical equipment. Worker safety is assured because an integral switch mechanism on the receptacle safely deenergizes the plug before it can be removed. Once removed a safety shutter ensures that workers are protected from live parts and only the correct mating plug can be inserted. Compliance to electrical codes and safety standards is simplified because Meltric’s switch-rated plugs and receptacles are UL and CSA listed as a branch circuit disconnect switch and as a motor circuit disconnect switch. Cost savings are achieved because they eliminate the need for non-fused disconnect switches. For motor connections it is your line-of-sight disconnect switch required by electrical codes. Maintenance efficiency is improved because they allow plug and play connection and disconnection of motors and other equipment by any qualified worker without having to wear PPE. A standard lockout hole in the plug allows easy locked out/tag out and an optional feature allows the plug and receptacle to be locked together. And for washdown areas, the device’s environmental rating is achieved automatically, as soon as the plug is mated to the receptacle or as soon as the lid on the receptacle is closed. In contrast, standard cord drops can be a dangerous and they often lead to maintenance hassles. When competitor’s pin and sleeve or twist-type devices are used, safety is a concern because arc flash may result when workers neglect to deenergize before unplugging equipment. These devices are not intended for connection or disconnection of live equipment. Instead, to conform to NFPA 70E or CSA Z462 and avoid arc flash accidents, the worker should shut off power at the disconnect switch and verify deenergization before disconnecting or connecting the plug. And watertightness can be a problem with competing devices because workers often neglect to tighten the plastic ring that is required to achieve rated watertightness. Leading to corrosion of the brass contacts and other problems. Plugs and connectors in a cord drop configuration can sometimes be hard to operate due to their awkward position. Not so when Meltric plugs and receptacles are installed with the optional finger drawplates. This recommended accessory makes it easy for anyone to safely connect the device. For cord drops Meltric recommends installing threaded NPT handles with a mating cord grip. For washdown environments sealer tape should be used and an optional plug cap is recommended to protect the plug when in the disconnected state. Meltric’s switch rated plugs and receptacles are available in a variety of configurations with ratings up to 200 amps, 600 volts, 75 horsepower and type 4X watertightness. For more product information please consult your Meltric catalog or contact your local sales representative.

CS1000 Single Pole Plugs & Receptacles (400A, 600V) revised

03:21
Meltric's CS1000 single-pole plugs and connectors set a new industry standard for safety and performance. They are UL 1691 Listed up to 400 amps at 600 volts AC or DC. Key CS1000 Safety features include • IP2X finger protection that protects users from live parts • A mechanical keying system, along with color coding, to prevent insertion of the wrong phases • A locking pin that prevents accidental disconnection • Additionally, the CS1000 was tested beyond UL 1691 requirements. It successfully passed three abnormal overload operations. Although it is not to be disconnected under load, the test results demonstrate a higher level of safety and robustness than the standard requires. CS1000 Performance features include • Exclusive spring-loaded butt-style contacts that ensure optimal contact force, resulting in superior electrical performance over thousands of operations • Solid silver-nickel contact material that provides greater conductivity, durability, and corrosion resistance over competitor’s brass contacts. • A protective cap that provides IP66/IP67 watertightness when the plug and receptacle are disconnected. These safety and performance features make the CS1000 your best choice for single-pole high amperage applications. To connect a CS1000 Insert the plug partially into the matching receptacle Rotate the plug counterclockwise as needed to position the locking pin 90 degrees from its latch. Now apply light insertion pressure and rotate the plug a quarter turn clockwise to seat the contacts and engage the locking pin. The plug and connector cannot be disconnected without first retracting the locking pin. Insert the key into the groove on the locking pin. Slide the key back to retract the locking pin. Twist the plug counterclockwise and remove Select a matching inlet and receptacle. MELTRIC offers either UL rated or CE rated devices in the catalog. Next select appropriate accessories Two types of handles are available- A standard duty handle that withstands a cable pull-out force up to 100 lbs. A heavy-duty handle with cord grip and mesh that withstands up to 300 lbs. For mounting a receptacle or inlet on a box, a 30 degree angle is available. Or if you prefer to mount the CS1000 directly onto a panel an adapter plate can be ordered. Crimping lugs are also required When handles are utilized, straight, threaded lugs are needed. When mounting to a box or a wall, straight lugs with a terminal are recommended For other miscellaneous CS1000 accessories consult your Meltric catalog. If you would like to place an order for the CS1000 please contact a MELTRIC representative today.

Self-Ejecting Plugs & Receptacles from Meltric Corporation

01:46
Most Meltric Plugs and Receptacles are available with a Self-Ejecting option. The self-ejecting option ensures that the plug or receptacle is safely disconnected when a vehicle or portable equipment is moved. As a result workers are protected from electrical hazards, equipment damage is prevented and maintenance costs are reduced. A Meltric receptacle or plug can be ordered with self-ejecting features. When a self-ejecting female connector is ordered the standard pawl on the connector is replaced by a sharks fin pawl. When the device is installed the pawl is attached to the power cable via a tension cord. Then if the connected equipment is moved the tension cord lifts the sharks fin pawl and the connector is ejected before damage can occur. When a self-ejecting male plug is ordered a shark’s fin mechanism is added to the plug. During installation a tension cord is attached from the sharks fin to the power cable. When tension develops in the power cable the sharks fin mechanism lifts the standard pawl on the female receptacle and the plug is safely ejected. Self- ejecting connections are commonly used on truck hook-ups (picture), cranes, railroad cars, refrigerated food carts, delivery vehicles and other portable equipment. Please note that the self-ejecting feature requires modifications to the receptacle that allow straight insertion and disconnection. Plugs and receptacles modified for ‘straight-insertion’ or ‘self-ejecting’ are not switch-rated. Consult the options section of the Meltric catalog for specific ordering instructions.
