SHOWstudio Fashion Film Awards 2018: Nick Knight's Brief

01:55
I'm delighted you are considering entering the second SHOWstudio Fashion Film Award. To me, fashion film is simply fashion in motion. I believe it is the most exciting and dynamic way to show fashion as all great clothing is designed to be seen in movement. We are opening up this award to a global creative community and we have created an open platform to showcase submissions.  Your submitted films must have fashion as their subject - I would encourage you to look at the recent collections on SHOWstudio to get inspired.  I would also recommend having a look at some of the great fashion films on SHOWstudio, from our early work in 2000 through to our latest releases. Pieces like Girly, Sweet, #asif, In Bloom, Tom Ford S/S 16, Up/90210, Gareth Pugh S/S 18  and Brighton Sorts all show the diverse ways of embracing this medium. I am not looking for narrative driven films, however films can be realistic or abstract. I am looking for beauty and emotion, not technical ability. For this reason, your pieces can be filmed on any device you choose. I believe fashion film stems from the same language as fashion photography. Therefore you can use any type of model, subject and garment that inspires you - I would encourage against using dancers or actors.  Please be brave, take risks and become someone who defines this new medium.  Submitted work will be up for the following awards: - Best Fashion Film  - Best Short Shorts: An animated gif. Up to 15 seconds in length - Best Illustration in Motion: Film must be predominantly moving Fashion Illustration - Best Long Format Film: A fashion documentary or long format film. 15 minutes of longer in length - Best Animated Fashion Film: Film must be predominantly be animated by using either 2D, 3D, Motion Graphics, Stop Motion - Best VR Film  - Best Sound Design - Best Commissioned Brand Fashion Film Good luck and I look forward to seeing your work! http://showstudio.com/project/adidas_originals_x_spezial_s_s_15/fashion_film 'For adidas fans there has always been a romanticism around the brand's birthplace in Herzogenaurach. A young man on a homage to Adi’s villa reflects the ideology behind the adidas Originals x SPEZIAL range. A new generation inspired by the foundations of this sportswear institution,' says Gary Aspden, creator of the adidas Originals x SPEZIAL range. To celebrate the launch of the S/S 15 SPEZIAL collection, Nick Griffiths and &SON Films offer a short film about a fan's journey to the birthplace of adidas. Their protagonist travels from Munich to the house where Adi Dassler once lived, a trip that mirrors Aspden's own voyage into the adidas archives. The film features an original score by Academy Award-winning composer Atticus Ross, who's past projects include Gone Girl, The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

05:11
http://showstudio.com/project/fashion_film_award The winner of SHOWstudio's first ever Fashion Film Award in collaboration with QIC Global Real Estate is Maksim Bashkaev, with his film 'Outlaw'! Maksim Bashkaev is the co-founder and designer of the Russian fashion brand Outlaw Moscow. The main goal of 'Outlaw' is to look into the unexplored life of ‘the outlaw people’ of Moscow. The film focuses on people who take the alternative route, combining the mixed cultural patterns of Empire and Soviet eras - they have few supporters in Russia. Their art is often misunderstood and oppressed by the majority, but their works are dedicated to fighting the isolation and representing ‘the other’ Russia: open, intellectual and free.

SHOWstudio: #asif - Nick Knight / Simon Foxton

03:39
Fascinated by the visual language of the internet, Nick Knight collaborated with stylist Simon Foxton to create a menswear editorial for VMAN magazine and a fashion film that explore the impact of our exposure to this imagery on a daily basis. In keeping with Knight and SHOWstudio's preoccupation with newness and immediacy in both technology and imagery the #asif film and editorial draw together the new unique aesthetics, obsessions and semiotics of the web. The editorial, shot by Knight and styled by Foxton, features an eclectic mix of models and street cast faces wearing pieces from exciting new collections by designers such as #BEENTRILL#, Hood by Air, Craig Green and KTZ. Consisting of 3D visuals created by SHOWstudio's digital art director Jon Emmony and retoucher Tom Wandrag and edited by Younji Ku, the #asif fashion film is a multi-layered explosion of imagery found only in the virtual world. It features a bricolage of visuals taken partly from a digitally manipulated and dissected version of Knight's editorial and also from social media apps, fetishistic video clips, icons, error messages and other online-specific references. 'The internet is such a huge presence in life it's bound to issue a new form of art. #asif is the first step in SHOWstudio's vision of that form,' says Nick Knight. In the days leading up to the shoot, Foxton curated a set of reference and process imagery including gifs, screenshots, model cards and styling ideas on the SHOWstudio Tumblr. This collection of imagery provides a hint to the building blocks that eventually formed the final work. http://showstudio.com/project/asif Concept and Direction: Nick Knight/Simon Foxton Imagery: Nick Knight Styling: Simon Foxton 3D Animation: Jon Emmony 3D Elements: Tom Wandrag Film Edit: Younji Ku Sound Mixing: Younji Ku
