TALKING ABOUT ROSE, PRISONER OF HISSÈNE HABRÉ. English subtitles

30:36
“Parler de Rose” (Talking about Rose), narrated by Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche and directed by Isabel Coixet examines the life and death of Rose Lokissim a prisoner of Hissène Habré, the former dictator of Chad. Survivors of Habré’s jails remember Rose as a brave inmate who took care of the sick and kept up the prisoners’ morale. She also delivered clandestine messages to the outside world to inform relatives of their loved ones inside. Ultimately, Habré’s political police, the DDS, learned of the messages and murdered her. Among the DDS files uncovered in 2001 by Human Rights Watch was the police report of Rose’s last interrogation. Rose’s questioners wrote that Rose said that even if they killed her, “Chad will thank her and history will talk about her.” Now, 29 years later, Rose’s courage is finally being remembered as Hissène Habré stands trial beginning 20 July 2015 before a special court in Senegal, where he has lived since he was overthrown in 1990, For more information about #ParlerdeRose, please contact [email protected] For more information on the Habré case, please visit: http://www.hrw.org/habre-case

"Steve Stanulis" Bodyguard Fired By Kanye West Breaks Silence About What Happened!

04:52
EXCLUSIVE: 'I didn't hit on Kim!': Chippendales dancer-turned-bodyguard fired by Kanye West breaks silence about what happened the night of the Met Gala and calls rapper 'the most self-absorbed person' he's ever met Bodyguard to the stars Steve Stanulis denies making advances toward Kim Kardashian at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday Stanulis, 42, a former Chippendales dancer and Staten Island cop, said he was sacked minutes after Kanye West saw him approaching his wife The couple left for the Met Gala without telling Stanulis, who was supposed to work as their security for the event He called Kanye 'self absorbed' and said he 'needs to chill the f*** out' He said he was told in February at Fashion Week that he shouldn't speak to Kim The bodyguard said he had worked around 15 days this year for the couple Stanulis said when Kanye dined out, he was never offered a glass of water The former cop said that Kanye never thanked him for his service The bodyguard fired after Kanye West reportedly flew into a jealous rage after he 'chatted up' his wife Kim Kardashian has hit back at the rapper. Former Chippendale dancer Steve Stanulis, in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online, denied he had made advances toward the TV star and declared: 'Kanye needs to chill the f*** out.' Stanulis, 42, a former Staten Island police officer and father of three, said he was sacked minutes after Kanye saw him approaching his wife at the door of their Presidential suite on the 36th floor of New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday. The bodyguard, who has also minded for Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire, said Kanye was 'the most self-absorbed person' he had ever met. 'Just because you have status, doesn't give you the right to talk to people in a certain way. 'I work with Saudi royal family members and when you sit with them and whatever they eat, you eat. They tip you and its great. 'But with this guy, you could be working with him for 17 hours and sitting in a restaurant with him. You would think he would say, "Hey you want something to drink?", but it was nothing. It just blew my mind. 'I would say that I have been blessed in my life to meet all different types of people in all different walks of life from super A-list to homeless people when I was a police officer in a project. 'But I would say he is probably the most self -absorbed person I have ever met in my life. He added: 'Keeping up with the Kardashians… unfortunately, I was keeping up with Kanye. 'It was cool the first day with seeing them on the TV and in the tabloids… but after a day or two the novelty wears off absolutely and it is a job. 'And 17 hours in, I couldn't care less if it was Marilyn Monroe. It is about getting paid, but it wasn't a high-paying job.' He said he should have decided not to work for the Wests again this week, after his experiences of last February. He said they left without saying thank you for his ten days of security work. 'I took Kanye and the two babies to the airport. He never said "good job, thank you, I appreciate it" …nothing. 'He just left me standing there. I wanted to spit on the floor as that was how annoyed I was.' He said he understood that his staff needed jobs and a salary, but added: 'But I don't know how people can work like that 24/7. 'People like his handlers make excuses for him, but there is no excuse for that.' He summed up his time with his famous charges as : 'Forgettable, traumatic, not worth it and disappointed.' He added: 'I didn't hit on Kim. Kanye has so much in his life. He should be thankful and be grateful for people who work so hard to keep him safe and happy.'

#2BillionCare - do you?

01:09
http://www.fao.org/dryland-forestry/en/ Two billion people live in the drylands, which cover 41 percent of the world's land area. Far from being bare and lifeless, these drylands contain trees and forests essential to the lives of people and animals, supplying basic needs such as food, medicine, wood, energy, and fodder for livestock. But every minute, we lose 23 hectares of land to desertification. Restoring these lands will return life to the soil and to the communities who know them best and depend on them for their livelihoods. As new trees and plants grow, transforming drylands into greener landscapes, they will help combat climate change, desertification and contribute to humanity’s efforts to save the planet. Help raise awareness on the importance of the world's dryland forests and the need for action towards their sustainable management and restoration by sharing this video. #2billioncare More information: http://www.fao.org/dryland-forestry/en/ This video was produced as a pro bono project by M&C Saatchi Abel, South Africa and supported financially by the European Union. The 12-metre construction, which is missing one of its legs, was created by carpenter Louis Zhenёva and artist Daniel Berseth to symbolise the plight of landmine victims and helps to remind states of the struggle for peace. TechCab Confessions: Julia Allison

04:15
Now for a second installment of our Tech Cab Confessions series, we have none other than NonSocietys Julia Allison, who answers Irinas never-ending query of how geeks have destroyed themselves of others on the internet. In case you are new to our Tech Cab, Irina drove around Austin, picking up her victims, oops, we mean fares, who confessed live on camera their deepest secrets and sins to you, our fair viewers. Julia Allison has written for Time Out New York, Star Magazine, Huffington Post, and has reported for MSNBC and Fox. In this confession, Julia drops her guard and dishes on her ex-boyfriend Jake Lodwick (one of the founders of Vimeo), her non-relationship with Kevin Rose, her decision to quit self-promoting herself, her realization that people were laughing at her and not with her, and gives advice to little girls about to embark on a career in internet fame. What a confession, what raw material for guest editor Richard Bluestein to mold into an episode. Whos Richard you ask? Why, hes Madge Weinstein, host of Yeast Radio, one of the most popular podcasts in the history of the internet. We think Madge and Irina were related in a prior immigration experience, but theyre all hush hush. They definitely share at least one organ, but they wont say which one.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks

12:23
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)

Bangkok International Film Festival on Ending Violence against Women and Girls

03:35
In preparation for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign 2015, UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific celebrated the first Bangkok International Film Festival on Ending Violence against Women and Girls, which took place from 26th to 29th November 2015, at the SF Cinema in Central World, in Bangkok, Thailand. The film festival aimed to raise public awareness of the multiple forms of violence women and girls continue to face around the world, and to mobilize broad support for preventing such violence before it starts. The films were selected to reflect diversity in terms of ethnicity, age and gender, based on their empowering messages, and promotion of gender equality and women’s and girls’ rights. Nine award-winning feature films and documentaries from Argentina, France, Germany, Israel, Pakistan, Singapore, Spain and the United States were screened for free during this four-day film festival. The event focus on issues that millions of women and girls across the world endure, including: domestic violence, child marriage, “honour” killings, sexual harassment, and rape, but also on broader issues of discrimination such as limited access to education and unsafe labour migration. UN Women launched the powerful multi-media campaign Faces of Prevention, in partnership with the United States Embassy in Thailand and USAID. Faces of Prevention sought to reframe the conversation surrounding gender-based violence in a way that inspires everyone to see it as his or her responsibility to do something, big or small, to prevent and end violence, and to support victims and survivors. A new Public Service Announcement “Active bystander” was screened before each film during the Film Festival, in order to reinforce the prevention and awareness-raising component of the event. In support of the UNiTE Campaign and HeForShe, the video has the objective to encourage young people especially young men, to take action on ending violence. Italian Americans are the seventh largest Census-reported ethnic group in the United States (which includes American ethnicity, an ethnonym used by many in the United States; overall, Italian Americans rank seventh, behind German American, African American, Irish American, Mexican American, English American, and American).About 5.5 million Italians immigrated to the United States from 1820 to 2004. By 1870, there were less than 25,000 Italian immigrants in America, many of them Northern Italian refugees from the wars that accompanied the Risorgimento—the struggle for Italian unification and independence from foreign rule. Immigration began to increase during the 1870s, when more than twice as many Italians immigrated (1870–79: 46,296) than during the five previous decades combined (1820–69: 22,627). The 1870s were followed by the greatest surge of immigration, which occurred between 1880 and 1914 and brought more than 4 million Italians to the United States, the great majority being from Southern Italy and Sicily, with most having agrarian backgrounds. This period of large scale immigration ended abruptly with the onset of the First World War in 1914 and, except for one year (1922), never fully resumed. Further immigration was greatly limited by several laws Congress passed in the 1920s.Approximately 84% of the Italian immigrants came from the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This was the poorest and least developed part of Italy, still largely rural and agricultural, where much of the populace had been impoverished by centuries of foreign misrule, and an oppressive taxation system imposed after Italian unification in 1861. After unification, the Italian government initially encouraged emigration to relieve economic pressures in the South. After the American Civil War, which resulted in over a half million killed or wounded, immigrant workers were recruited from Italy and elsewhere to fill the labor shortage caused by the war. In the United States, most Italians began their new lives as manual laborers in Eastern cities, mining camps and in agriculture. The descendants of the Italian immigrants gradually rose from a lower economic class in the first generation to a level comparable to the national average by 1970. The Italian community has often been characterized by strong ties to family, the Roma ...

The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of the future state of Kansas, and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the future states of Idaho and Oregon. The Oregon Trail was laid by fur traders and traders from about 1811 to 1840, and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared increasingly farther west, and eventually reached all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, at which point what came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as almost annual improvements were made in the form of bridges, cutoffs, ferries, and roads, which made the trip faster and safer. From various starting points in Iowa, Missouri, or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains. From the early to mid-1830s (and particularly through the years 1846–69) the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, farmers, miners, ranchers, and business owners and their families. The eastern half of the trail was also used by travelers on the California Trail (from 1843), Mormon Trail (from 1847), and Bozeman Trail (from 1863), before turning off to their separate destinations. Use of the trail declined as the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, making the trip west substantially faster, cheaper, and safer. Today, modern highways, such as Interstate 80 and Interstate 84, follow parts of the same course westward and pass through towns originally established to serve those using the Oregon Trail.

SUMMARY ======= Michaëlle Jean (French pronunciation: [mika.ɛl ʒɑ̃]; born September 6, 1957) is a Canadian stateswoman and former journalist who is the third and current Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, after succeeding Abdou Diouf in January 2015; she is the first woman to hold the position. From 2005 to 2010, Jean was Governor General of Canada, the 27th since Canadian Confederation. Jean was a refugee from Haiti—coming to Canada in 1968—and was raised in the town of Thetford Mines, Quebec. After receiving a number of university degrees, Jean worked as a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), as well as undertaking charity work, mostly in the field of assisting victims of domestic violence. In 2005, she was appointed governor general by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, to replace Adrienne Clarkson as vicereine and she occupied the post until succeeded by David Johnston in 2010. Early in her tenure, comments of hers recorded in some of the film works by her husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, were construed as supporting Quebec sovereignty and her holding of dual citizenship caused doubt about her loyalties. But Jean denied separatist leanings, renounced her citizenship of France (acquired through her marriage), and eventually became a respected vicereine noted for her attention to the Canadian Forces, Aboriginal Canadians, and the arts, especially youth involvement in them. In 2010, Jean was appointed to a four-year term as the Special Envoy for Haiti for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.Michaëlle Jean was sworn in as a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada on September 26, 2012, giving her the accordant style of The Honourable; however, as a former Governor General of Canada, Jean is entitled to be styled for life with the superior form of The Right Honourable.
