10 Floating Cities That Will Save Humanity In An Apocalypse

top 10 most amazing structures at sea and in the ocean that could potentially save humans during an apocalypse Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Should global warming ever melt the polar ice caps to a point where the Earth is flooded, what does that mean for humanity? While we would like to think that the experience will be like the movie, “Waterworld,” it is highly doubtful that there will be rogue tribes trying to find their home, with dry land being nothing more than a myth. Scientists, architects, and engineers have been working for decades trying to find alternative homes for civilization as the environment gets more unstable each year. It seems that the apocalypse in the form of flooding may very well be in our reach. But the question is, how can we ensure the survival of not only humanity, but the creations we have like books, paintings, movies, and more. Thanks to the hard work of several companies, we could have a solution as early as 2020. While it’s reassuring to know the solution is coming, do we want it this early? Is Earth’s doom that imminent? In this video are ten floating cities that could save humanity. If the world becomes engulfed in water, these floating cities could be the solution. 71% of our planet is already covered in water, and it seems that losing the land wouldn’t be that big of a loss. Given how tiny we are in comparison to Earth, the increasing water levels should concern us. However, there are people and large corporations who have no interest in preserving our planet. So, it seems that these floating cities will find their use sooner than we think. World's First Floating City Documentary

44:27
World's First Floating City Documentary Seasteading is the concept of creating permanent dwellings at sea, called seasteads, outside the territory claimed by any government. Most proposed seasteads have been modified cruising vessels. Other proposed structures have included a refitted oil platform, a decommissioned anti-aircraft platform, and custom-built floating islands.[1] No one has created a state on the high seas that has been recognized as a sovereign state. The Principality of Sealand is a disputed micronation formed on a discarded sea fort near Suffolk, England.[2] The closest things to a seastead that have been built so far are large ocean-going ships sometimes called "floating cities", and smaller floating islands. The term combines the words sea and homesteading. At least two people independently began using it: Ken Neumeyer in his book Sailing the Farm (1981) and Wayne Gramlich in his article "Seasteading – Homesteading on the High Seas" (1998). Floating Cities of the Future

01:30
Plans for the world’s first “floating city” have been unveiled by California-based company Seasteading Institute, who have just signed a deal with the French Polynesian government to begin construction in the Pacific in two years' time. The Seasteading Institute has been working on its concept of what it calls “permanent, innovative communities floating at sea” for the last five years and has been searching for a host nation to trial it. The group is interested in the social aspect of a new kind of semi-independent community as well, seeing it as an ideal opportunity to try out new methods of running a society. From how to keep the atmosphere clean to potential new government styles, this could be a very interesting experiment indeed. “What we're interested in is societal choice and having a location where we can try things that haven't been tried before,” explained Randolph Hencken, executive director of the institute. Although he did admit “'I don't think it will be that dramatically radical in the first renditions.” The government of French Polynesia, a tiny Pacific state made up of over 100 islands, expressed interest in the project as rising sea levels is a very real threat to them and a permanent floating city could be an innovative way to deal with future displacement. However, they specified two objectives the project must prove before plans can go ahead: The city must benefit the local economy and it must prove environmentally friendly. If these can be met, draft legislation will be drawn up next year and construction is expected to begin in 2019. So far, the plans are mainly artist renderings and computer-generated designs of what the cities might look like, though the plan is for any floating community to include healthcare and medical research facilities, aquaculture farms, and sustainable energy plants. The design is based on a plan for floating platforms that can be rearranged according to each city’s needs. The platforms will be made from reinforced concrete and be able to support three-story buildings such as offices, apartments, and hotels for up to 100 years. With around 250 to 300 residents to begin with, the city is predicted to cost around $167 million. Whether it really will be feasible remains to be seen, but you can’t fault the institute for its imagination or the French Polynesia for attempting to address the future threat to its people now. We’ll be keeping an eye on how this develops. Floating city backed by Peter Thiel could one day become a reality

04:59
Nearly a decade ago, billionaire Peter Thiel co-founded a nonprofit called Seasteading Institute and contributed seed funding toward what could become the world's first floating city. The institute is now embarking on a pilot project with the government of French Polynesia. As CNBC reports, the group plans to build 300 houses on an island, which will run under its own governance and use its own cryptocurrency called Varyon. At first, the project's founders imagined the city as a libertarian utopia free of regulation (and taxes). Joe Quirk, president of the Institute, told Business Insider that his team's vision has evolved beyond that. The group now also sees the city as a way to live with rising sea levels, which are expected to increase more than six feet by the end of this century. Stay tuned to take a look at the ambitious plan. Please leave your comments or feel free to discuss in the comments section. Your feedback will be appreciated. Thanks for watching!! Like! Share! Boston Architects Envision Floating Cities

03:03
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevision As our planet becomes more crowded, city planners and architects are trying to come up with new ideas for future human habitation. We've seen biospheres and proposals for underground housing, but now one Boston-based architectural firm has come up with a conceptual plan that envisages cities that float. Let's have a look. This is a glimpse of what may be the future of urban living. It's called NOAH, a fully sustainable floating habitat designed to support thousands of people. The idea comes from architect Kevin Schopfer, who says he was inspired by the destruction of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He says NOAH is an example of arcology, a design incorporating the principles of architecture with ecology. [Kevin Schopfer, Schopfer Associates]: "I began thinking seriously about the notion on how you combine arcology and the technology of floating cities, what should they be? What would they be?" NOAH would sit on a barge on the river. It would be built from sustainable and recycled material and fitted with thousands of solar panels and wind turbines to generate its own energy. [Kevin Schopfer, Schopfer Associates]: "You are as driven to sustainable perfection as you can be and you try every move to make sure that what, the materials you use and how you use them are reacting the right way with the environment." Schopfer is employing those same design principles in an another disaster-inspired project, a conceptual habitat he calls Harvest City. In January, 2010 a massive earthquake leveled Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti, leaving more than 300,000 people dead and millions homeless. Harvest City, says Schofer, would float in the bay of Port au Prince as a temporary home for the displaced and center for commerce. [Kevin Schopfer, Schopfer Associates]: "In the situation of Haiti, it allows Haiti to breathe a little and give people a place to go while they are re-growing things on land. It creates a new industry, which it would, an ongoing industry and it creates a very safe haven, if you will for schools and ect." Harvest city would be three kilometers wide and comprise farm land, residential areas, and markets, all connected by canals. Like NOAH, Harvest City would be based around sustainability. The design calls for clean energy generation, rainwater collection depots and desalination plants to make water fitr for for farming and human consumption. Schopfer's ideas have received mixed reviews. Many applaud the designs on paper, but some critics say they belong in the realm of science fiction. As for Schopfer, he believes the kind of self-sustaining future described by his arcology designs, will arrive sooner than the critics realize.

Seasteading: Floating libertarian city coming soon to French Polynesia - TomoNews

08:42
FRENCH POLYNESIA — A fully autonomous floating city was once just a libertarian fantasy, but is now just a few years shy of becoming reality. French Polynesia signed a deal with the Seasteading Institute on Jan. 13, agreeing to host the world’s first floating city, or seastead, in a tropical lagoon within its protected waters, the New York Times reported. The seastead will be designated as a special economic zone that will develop innovative technologies for solar power, aquaculture, and wind energy. Design-wise, the floating city will consist of interconnected square and pentagonal platforms made from reinforced concrete. The platforms will have a variety of structures built on them, from residential and commercial, to green spaces; with pricing per square foot reportedly on par with major cities like New York or London. The project’s initial islands are expected to house a few dozen people, and will cost an estimated combined total of $10 million to $50 million. With rising sea levels threatening many Pacific islands, seastead advocates believe floating cities may be a solution. Seasteads are being touted as environmentally friendly and restorative, as the presence of floating communities could also spark recovery for the region’s dying corals by slightly lowering water temperatures in their vicinity. The Seasteading Institute will have to complete environmental and economic feasibility studies, but construction on the project could start as early as next year. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Sea Steading | Floating City Project | Randolph Hencken | French Polynesia | Social experiment

02:33
First floating city. Which city? 1)The US firm has signed an agreement with the French Polynesia’s government, and hope to begin construction in 2019. 2)Construction experts at the Sea steading Institute have spent five years in trying to work out how to build 'permanent, innovative communities floating at sea '. What was being proposed? 1)The institute's executive director Randolph Hencken, told that, For a start, it will be in French Polynesian territory, close to shore and protected from the high seas. 2)Seasteading is a concept that involves building permanent dwellings at sea. 3)Randolph added that he was confident the project could benefit the French Polynesia's economy - and draw in a fresh wave of tourism. 4)He also added, "Seasteading is a concept that involves building permanent dwellings at sea. Hurdles: 1)whether it will benefit the local economy. 2)whether it can avoid damaging the environment. 3)The former is little more than computer generated images so far, and as for public services and paying for them, Mr Hencken admits it is a blank slate. 4)But beside all these things, Mr Randolph Hencken says, "Our ultimate goal is to create space for any experiments... not exclusively libertarianism." Reverse in attitude : 1)Mr Hencken insists living closer to the sea will reverse the attitude that "oceans are a hunting ground, a superhighway and a garbage can." 2)With many prominent seasteading supporters famously keen on eliminating taxes and regulations, critics are unconvinced sustainability is the real goal. Conclusion : 1)To conclude with, If it fails, it will join a long list of doomed futurist daydreams, but if the "pilot project of just two or three platforms" grows into a global social experiment, it may ironically have landlubbers to thank for helping set them out to sea. The World Cruise Ship | A Floating City of Millionaires | World's Largest Cruise • The World, a 644 feet-long white vessel, is the largest and probably most exclusive residential yacht on earth • To buy a property on board, residents must have a net worth of $10 million • The boat features the only at-sea full-sized tennis court in the world, as well as six restaurants, a spa, and two swimming pools Stepping onto The World feels like boarding a 21st-century Titanic. Sitting majestically in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor, this gleaming 644 feet long white vessel is the largest, and probably most exclusive, "residential yacht" on earth. Home to the world's only full-sized at-sea tennis court, a 7,000-square foot spa, and fitness center, and 12,000-bottle wine collection, this ship has visited 1,213 ports and sailed 641,000 nautical miles. This year alone it has undertaken expeditions to two of the most remote regions on earth -- the Ross Sea, in Antarctica, and Melanesia, near New Guinea. But don't get too excited. None of the suites on this 12-deck beauty are available to rent. Dubbed a "condo cruise liner," every one of the 165 luxury apartments on board -- worth between $3 million for a studio and $15 million for a three-bedroom pad -- are owned by residents who must have a net worth of $10 million. U.S. company plans to build massive floating city

00:56
Originally published on November 29, 2013 A Florida-based company has proposed building a floating city with its own airport, casino and shopping center on a giant ship, at an estimated cost of US$10 billion. The Freedom Ship would be 107 m in height, 230 m in width and 1,400 m in length. Once completed, it would be more than three times longer than the Queen Mary II cruise ship. The ship would have be able to house 50,000 permanent residents. It would also have room for 30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 crew and 10,000 overnight guests. The ship would be equipped with a school, a hospital, a shopping center, casino and an airport. Visitors and residents would be able to leave the ship either by plane or by boat docked at the rear of the ship. The Freedom Ship would sail around the world continuously, doing a full circuit every two years. Its planned route would begin from the east coast of the U.S., take it across the Atlantic to Europe, then continue on around Africa and over to Australia and Asia, before returning to the U.S. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Extreme Engineering Floating City of the Future - Megastructures (Documentary)

42:04
Floating City of the Future New Orleans is under siege. Devastating floods caused by global warming and rising sea levels have brought the city to its knees. The old defenses - levees and canals - can't be counted on any longer. But surprisingly some engineers are saying the only way for New Orleans to escape the water is to build a floating city: a new New Orleans buoyed by the water not drowning under it. Long a dream for engineers science has finally caught up with theory. Innovations in nautical design material science and maritime construction have made it possible. But much more remains to be done. The city will have to survive waves repel attacks and dodge hurricanes. The stakes are sky high but the Big Easy is up to the challenge. With the world getting better and better every second the quest for perfection is at its limit and beyond. The quest of perfection is getting insatiable and there are some insanely big and ambitious projects underway. Here are the mega projects which promise to further enhance the world we currently live in. With the growth and expansion of the world’s economies there are plenty of large-scale investment projects that are under development currently. Most of these megaprojects of the future consisting of roads bridges skyscrapers airports and tunnels involve massive investment and use of superior technology. The cost of these large projects can run into billions of dollars and the greatest challenge for developing some of these spectacular projects can be to acquire adequate funding. These new methods of transport and infrastructure around different cities have opened up new possibilities for trade and commerce and paved the way for globalization. Let’s take a look at some of the megaprojects of the future here. Engineering projects around the globe keep getting bigger and more ambitious. there are structures being designed and built that will dwarf anything that has come before. Plans are on the drawing board for projects so huge – not only in scale but in their implications for society – they’re almost beyond imagination. This documentary that eyes the largest construction projects ever imagined – 'Extreme Engineering'.

World’s First Floating City To Emerge In The Pacific Ocean By 2020, And Here’s The Look

01:28
Floating cities are no longer science fiction. Seasteading Institute, a San Francisco-based nonprofit has been developing this idea since the foundation of the organization in 2008. It has reached an agreement with the government of French Polynesia to begin testing in its waters. “If you could have a floating city, it would essentially be a start-up country”. “We can create a huge diversity of governments for a huge diversity of people”. The community in question should consist of about a dozen structures, including homes, hotels, offices, and restaurants. Engineers and architects have already visited an undisclosed location where the project should emerge. The main aim of the idea is to “liberate humanity from politicians” and “rewrite the rules that govern society”. Building this utopian offshore will cost about $167 million. ****************************************************** Kindly follow us: https://www.facebook.com/Videoinspirational-1910126949220655/ https://www.instagram.com/videoinspirationalvi/ https://twitter.com/videoinspiratio

Artisanopolis - Floating City Project Animation

01:41
Artisanopolis, created by Gabriel Scheare, Luke & Lourdes Crowley, and Patrick White of Roark 3D and Fortgalt as a gift to The Seasteading Institute, in conjunction with the Institute's Architectural Design Contest. Based on the foundational vision of The Seasteading Institute and DeltaSync, these works of art constitute an attempt at communicating the essence of what the infrastructure of sea-based civilization might look like in the near future. In this age of limited governance options, we intend to suggest an alternative model that allows new communities to form beyond the limiting jurisdictions of existing nation states in order to promote freedom and competition in the marketplace. Each floating platform can be towed via tugboat from location to location and they can interlock to form sprawling formations over the water’s surface. Ballasts are used to adjust the depth at which the platforms sit in the water and coupling latches lock them together to form larger, cohesive footprints for convenience and stability. Modeled after those found at the seaport of Brighton, England, a large modular wavebreaker surrounds the city to shelter it from rough waters and wind while energy is supplied by renewable means like photovoltaic panel arrays and wave-driven turbines. Aquaponics greenhouse domes provide locally grown food, seawater is desalinated on site to provide drinking water, organic waste is removed via tankers to an off-site composting location, and inorganic waste is recycled. With so much focus on efficiency and sustainability, The Floating City Project promises to serve as a viable template upon which other seasteading projects can be modeled in the future. French Polynesia to host world’s first floating city

01:11
RESTRICTIONS: NONE For story suggestions please contact [email protected] A fully autonomous floating city was once just a libertarian fantasy, but is now just a few years shy of becoming reality. RUNDOWN SHOWS: 1. French Polynesia to host seastead in a tropical lagoon 2. Seastead to be special economic zone, will showcase clean energy innovations 3. World's first floating city set for 2020 in Pacific Ocean

10:51
The world's first floating nation is set to appear in the Pacific Ocean off the island of Tahiti in 2020.A handful of hotels, homes, offices, restaurants and more will be built in the next few years by the nonprofit Seasteading Institute, which hopes to 'liberate humanity from politicians'.The radical plans, bankrolled by PayPal founder Peter Thiel, could see the creation of an independent nation that will float in international waters and operate within its own laws.In a new interview, Joe Quirk, president of the Seasteading Institute, said he wants to see 'thousands' of rogue floating cities by 2050, each of them 'offering different ways of governance'.'Governments just don't get better,' Mr Quirk told the New York Times.'They're stuck in previous centuries. That's because land incentives a violent monopoly to control it.'The first island is being funded by a coin offering, a new concept gaining popularity in Silicon Valley in which money is 'crowd sourced' by creating and selling a virtual currency. The non-profit hopes to raise around $60 million by 2020 to build a dozen buildings. The structures will feature 'green roofs' covered with vegetation and construction will  use local bamboo, coconut fibre, wood and recycled metal and plastic.First revealed in January, the plans have been approved by the French Polynesian government, which  is now creating a special economic zone so the floating nation can operate under its own trade laws. The tiny nation, a collection of 118 islands in the southern Pacific with a population just over 200,000, has granted the Seasteading Institute 100 acres of beachfront to operate from.French Polynesia is interested in the project as the area is at risk from rising sea levels. It may seem like an ambitious plan, but the group believes semi-independent cities would be the perfect place to try new modes of government and agricultural methods.Mr Quirk and his team have now started a new company, Blue Frontiers, which will build and operate the floating islands in French Polynesia. He said he was inspired to build a floating city, known as seasteading, when he went to the US festival Burning Man 2011.The enormous event, which attracts 70,000 people every year, could provide a model for a new society where 'rules don't observe their usual parameters', he said.'If you could have a floating city, it would essentially be a start-up country,' Mr Quirk said.'We can create a huge diversity of governments for a huge diversity of people.'The Seasteading Institute, co-founded by Paypal founder Peter Thiel and political economic theorist Patri Friedman, has spent the past five years creating designs for 'permanent, innovative communities floating at sea'.In 2012, soon after Mr Quirk joined the Seasteading Institute, he wrote a paper with Mr Friedman titled: 'Seasteading: How Floating Nations Will Restore The Environment, Enrich The Poor, Cure The Sick and Liberate Humanity From Politicians.'The groups claims that building floating cities is the first step to fulfilling 'the eight great moral imperatives'.Its deal with French Polynesia, signed in January, specifies two points the project must prove before it gets the green light: Whether it will benefit the local economy, and if it proves to be environmentally friendly.Even if it succeeds in proving these two points, the project will still need to be approved by the local government, and possibly France, which holds the territory.Randolph Hencken, executive director of the institute, said in January: 'What we're interested in is societal choice and having a location where we can try things that haven't been tried before.'I don't think it will be that dramatically radical in the first renditions.'We were looking for sheltered waters, we don't want to be out in the open ocean - it's technologically possible but economically outrageous to afford.'If we can be behind a reef break, then we can design floating platforms that are sufficient for those waters at an affordable cost.'We don't have to start from scratch as this is a pilot project.'They also have very stable institutions so we're able to work with a government that wants us there, that we have respect for and they have respect for us.'Draft legislation will be drawn up next year and construction is expected to begin in 2019.The first city would be built on a network of 11 rectangular and five-sided platforms so it could be rearranged according to its inhabitants' needs like a floating jigsaw, Mr Quirk

The Seasteading Institute's floating cities are designed for unregulated innovation

01:03
A plan to build self-sufficient floating cities outside of national borders features in the latest movie from our Dezeen x MINI Living video series. The Seasteading Institute is a non-profit organisation founded by political economic theorist Patri Friedman and Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel. The organisation aims to build "start-up countries" at sea, known as "seasteads", that offer greater freedom for innovation in science, technology and politics. According to its website, the institute's goal is to develop "open spaces for experimenting with new societies" in order to "allow the next generation of pioneers to peacefully test new ideas for how to live together". The company claims that building floating cities will offer an alternative to conventional models of governance, with few regulations. Get tickets to the 2016 Voice & Exit Conference at http://voiceandexit.com Is seasteading the wave of the future? Joe Quirk of the Seasteading Institute thinks floating cities will allow micro nations to compete for people -- providing better life options and innovations. “Aquapreneurs,” says Quirk, can save humanity from disease, environmental harm and maybe even war. Voice & Exit is a dynamic, transformative festival of the future. Exiters are dedicated to maximizing human flourishing for individuals, communities and our world. “You never change things by fighting the existing reality,” Buckminster Fuller reminds us. “To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” The Voice & Exit community is for those actively seeking to opt-out of models that don’t give rise to human flourishing to create those models that do. The Next Big Thing: China’s floating city

01:04
LIKE ,COMMENT , SHARE .. SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS FACEBOOK PAGE -https://www.facebook.com/Megaworldstudio Further evidence of China’s seemingly insatiable appetite for unconventional edifices comes with newly unveiled proposals for the development of a “floating city”, complete with underwater chambers and a self-contained ecosystem, off the country’s coast. Its genesis stems from a successful partnership between Chinese engineering company CCCC and London-based architects AT Design Office. The groups collaborated on the development of Port City, a 230-hectare reclaimed island off the coast of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and now see the construction of floating, mobile landmasses as their next objective. CCCC has already developed “floating bridges” which it claims can be suspended in water without support, and this nascent technology will provide the foundation for its floating city. The four-square-mile urban centre will provide housing to residents of China’s overcrowded cities, but it is to serve primarily as a high-end tourist attraction. Tony Fan, design director of AT Design Office explains: “Chinese tourism investors want to create attractions that have never been seen before, and at the moment going under [and on] the sea is very attractive to the market. People in Britain might want to go to the beach to see the sun, there people want to go under the water. The demand looks very real; there’s a need and a dream there and they want to do it.” Under current plans, the floating city will include plenty to keep future visitors entertained. Vast recreation zones will feature multiple restaurants, bars, museums, galleries and a theme park, and areas both on and below the water’s surface will host stadium-style concerts. Various hotels will stand underwater, with incoming visitors being able to dock at the city’s cruise terminal and yacht marina before being transferred to their final destination by submarine. Original plans suggested that the city could be sited by Macau, already an exceptionally popular destination with Chinese tourists, but with the floating city expected to be entirely self-sufficient it won’t be necessary to locate it by a larger urban centre. Satellite farms will provide food; hydropower generators will provide energy; and rainwater from roofs and facades will be channelled into a freshwater lake. Detractors have queried whether such an ambitious project will ever come to pass, but the floating city’s backers are adamant that its construction is only a matter of time. Developers point to the floating houses already in existence in Holland as a humble precursor of what’s to come, and the threat of rising sea levels is providing further impetus for the development of floating habitats. More significantly, perhaps, is the fact that CCCC’s parent company is China Transport, one of the largest investors in China. The company’s financial might is significant and with its support it’s expected that construction of the floating city will start within 10 to 20 years.

China solar panels: PRC is now home to the world’s largest floating solar farm

06:32
HUAINAN CITY, CHINA — A new floating solar farm constructed on a lake in Huainan City, China is said to be the largest in the world. According to the South China Morning Post, the farm is made up of 160,000 solar panels. These panels reportedly can produce electricity for up to 15,000 homes. The farm is built over a lake that emerged from a collapsed coal mine, reported Phys.org. The water from the lake helps cool the panels’ electronics, reported the Smithsonian Mag, citing a Telegraph report on Europe’s largest solar farm. The farm was linked to Huainan City’s power grid last month, reported the South China Morning Post. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Floating City of the Future

01:02
World's most beautiful & amazing places, the Floating City of the Future in Japan. A real life water world metropolis is here. A British and Asian-based design firm has just come up with designs of the "Floating City" of the future. This self-sufficient, Water World-like society comes complete with farms, docks, canals, a hotel, entertainment complex, and a floating stadium for sports. The metropolis is comprised of hexagonal and triangular modules that are separated above water with a series of canals for eco-friendly transportation. At the same time, the island is connected below the water with a series of walkways, roads, and tunnels for both pedestrians and electric cars. Once approved, the world-class, self-sufficient eco-colony would be built about 31 miles off the coast of Hong Kong, near Macau, and is about 10 square kilometers in size. It would serve as both a residential community and tourist destination alike in which transportation to and from Hong Kong will be provided through cruise ships. This amazing city has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth.
