Professor Martina Newell McGloughlin of the University of California at Davis explains the rigorous safety testing completed on all foods derived from crop biotechnology. McGloughlin says GMO food crops are more thoroughly tested than any non-GMO products in the history of agriculture, and explains how the same basic building blocks of DNA make up all genetically modified and conventionally grown foods. From Glow in the Dark Rabbit to Anti-Cancer Purple Tomatoes here are 18 Genetically Modified Organisms You Don't Know About Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr # 9 Fish Strawberries The ripest and juiciest strawberries you got from the supermarket might contain the genetic traces of a fish. Scientists have been experimenting with combining strawberries with the “anti-freeze genes” that are found in cold water fish like Arctic Char and Sea flounders which help the strawberries resist freezing and dying in bad weather. Luckily, it doesn’t create a weird fishy-tasting strawberry. # 8 Glow in the Dark Rabbit Most genetically modified organisms have a scientific purpose in mind or a greater goal that usually justifies messing with something’s DNA spread. However, Eduard Kac used genetic engineering for creating works of art rather than for scientific research. His most notorious work was the Glow in the Dark rabbit named Alba. It sparked a debate about animal rights, but Alba died before anything was resolved. # 7 Goats Spliced with Spiders When you think of genetically splicing something with a spider, you usually think of superheroes with spider themed super powers. However, in real life, you can find animals that have been genetically combined with spiders - goats. Spider silk is flexible and strong, and some even want to try and produce it on a larger scale so we can use it to make things like parachute cords. One lab has spliced spider’s genes with a goat so that these flexible and strong spider silk genes would be replicated in their milk. This silk milk is also able to create Biosteel, a strong web-like material. # 6 Golden Rice Rice is a major staple food in many parts of the world partly because it's cheap and partly because it helps you feel full even when you don’t have much to eat. However, the normal white rice isn’t very healthy for you. That is why scientists are working on Golden Rice, rice that was spliced with vegetables like squash and carrots that not only create the golden color but include beta-carotene which is more nutrient dense and could help prevent blindness in children who eat it. # 5 Ear Mouse The most notorious genetically modified animal might be the ear mouse or the “Vacanti Mouse” which was created in 1995 by scientists in Massachusetts. The scientists wanted to prove that cartilage structures could be grown on other living creatures before being removed and transplanted into humans who need it. However, this mouse would quickly become famous or infamous as it went onto the Jay Leno show and then used as a mascot by animal-rights groups who were opposed to genetic modifications. # 4 Scorpion Cabbage The Androctonus australis is one of the most dangerous scorpions in the world with a venom that can cause tissue damage and death. So of course, we combined the genes from this scorpion with cabbage intended for human consumption. The gene of the scorpion’s venom changed when it was spliced with the cabbage. The venom is now only poison to insects, which spasm and die when they try to eat the crop. That same poison is supposedly completely harmless to humans, making it the perfect crop. # 3 Anti-Cancer Purple Tomatoes Researchers have created a tomato that is not only more flavorful but would also help prevent cancer. The researchers spliced tomatoes with the snapdragon flower to create a deep, purple tomato that almost looks like a blackberry. These super tomatoes contain potent antioxidants and inhibit the growth of cancer cells, ease the symptoms of diabetes, and even relieve the pains of growing old. You might just see purple tomatoes on your pizza someday soon. # 2 Chinese Dog-Pig This image went around the internet with a bunch of people thinking it was some sort of failed chimera of a pig and a dog because of its pink skin and strange tufts of hair. While it was not an animal that was genetically engineered in a lab, it is an animal that has been genetically engineered over generations and generations, like most dogs are. This dog, in particular, is the Hairless Chinese Crested Dog - an expensive and rare breed of dog that is highly sought after by some people. Even though the winner of the annual world’s ugliest dog contest is usually a Chinese Crested. # 1 Less-Flatulent Cows You might have heard that cows produce an excess of methane, which contributes to the dangerous greenhouse effect. It’s hard to make cows stop producing methane since they’re some of the most populous domestic livestock in the world and that is a natural part of their digestive progress. Until we genetically modified cattle to produce 25 less percent of the bacterium in their digestive tract that creates methane gas. Basically, we made cows that fart less.

We investigate whether GM mosquitoes created in labs can be the new hope in the fight against malaria, Zika and dengue. Aedus aegypti is the ultimate pest. The small, dark female mosquito transmits deadly viruses, like dengue fever, chikungunya, malaria and the Zika virus. Their eggs can last up to a year without water and they can "travel" on planes, trains, and automobiles. That's how these insects have infested global populations. "Dengue fever has been increasing almost 30 times in the past 30 years. It's increasing all around the world and it's spreading fast," says Derric Nimmo, product development manager at Oxitec, a British biotechnology company. Currently, there is no vaccine or treatment for either Zika or dengue. The only way to fight the spread of the disease is to limit the insect population. "As scientists, we've been fighting a losing battle against mosquitoes. They kill one person every 12 seconds. There's a desperate need for new technology," says Andrew McKemey, field operations, Oxitec. British biotechnology company Oxitec has engineered male mosquitoes to pass a fatal gene on to their offspring, which kills them before they reach adulthood. When released into the environment, Oxitec's mosquitoes can, in ideal circumstances, suppress the proliferation of mosquitoes and ultimately cut down on the mosquito-borne diseases. The hope is that if the deadly male mates with wild females, the population will thin. This could potentially save hundreds of thousands of human lives. However, not everyone is convinced. For instance, residents of Key West, Florida are split over whether they agree that genetically modified mosquitoes have a place in fighting the spread of vector-borne diseases. Those opposed to GM mosquitoes argue their presence is unnecessary, since mosquito-borne outbreaks have been largely under control in their community. But their local mosquito control departments are in a constant fight against the outbreaks. The Keys experienced a dengue fever outbreak in 2009, which was eventually eradicated. And while the Keys has been dengue-free since, their mosquito control's district can only control the population of mosquitoes down to 50 percent. This has compelled them to look towards Oxitec's genetically modified solution. Fifty percent reduction rate "is not enough to prevent dengue transmission," says Nimmo, manager of product development. He believes his company can do better. According to Oxitec, field trials in the Cayman Islands, Panama and Brazil reduced the mosquito population by 90 percent. In fact, in 2015, a scientific advisory panel to the government of Brazil approved the release of the Oxitec mosquitoes to control a dengue outbreak. To verify those numbers, Danielo Calvahlo, from the University of Sao Paulo, analysed the data. According to him, it's only a 60-70 percent reduction rate as opposed to 90 percent, calling to question Oxitec's methods. So can genetically modified mosquitoes help eradicate dengue or malaria? On this episode of TechKnow, the team travels to London to visit Oxitec's headquarters, witnessing first hand how a genetically modified mosquito is engineered in the lab. TechKnow also meets Anthony James, professor of microbiology at the University of California, Irvine, who is genetically modifying mosquitoes to make the insects resistant to malaria, which will prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

The statement, "No harm has been shown." is the exact same thing as saying, "No safety or health testing has ever been done." Or, in other words, the people behind the corporations like Monsanto & Syngenta are intentionally lying and deceiving everyone. The biotech industry uses ZERO 'scientific integral protocols' when they produce a product which means that they have absolutely no idea what the ramifications will be to both people and the environment. Therefore, the public has the right to PROHIBIT such corporations from performing what is effectively genocidal practices. Monsanto ADMITTED that they CAN'T test GMO foods for safety because there are too many confounding variables! Dr. Lorrin Pang, MD, Department of Health Maui County District Health Officer, shares his personal concerns about the safety of GMO food products and the industry's lack of regulation speaks at the November 2013 SHAKA Movement meeting about GMO's: Are We Gambling With Our Future? Speaking as a private citizen, Dr. Lorrin Pang takes us through an engaging Power Point presentation that provides scientific and medical facts that everyone immediately needs to know about. He discusses the truth about genetically engineered foods and crops, horizontal gene transfer (HGT), and the chemical cocktail GE Farming and testing practices that affect our health and environment in Maui County as well as the rest of the world. Learn how plant biotechnology works through the scientists who research, develop and test GMO crops at Dupont. During one of our first Open Doors tours, we spoke to researchers about drought tolerant GMOs, disease resistant GMOs, and learned about how genes of interest are introduced to the DNA of plants. We also heard about the time it takes to bring a GMO to market (about 15 years) and the regulations involved, including USDA, EPA, and FDA regulation of GMO crops.

I don't own any the photos or music in this video and I do not take credit for them. Animal chemical testing is a problem involving the use of harsh chemical being testing on animals skin, often for testing the safety of cosmetics and other household items like shampoo and soap. It creates national controversy over whether the testing of animals is really necessary. I hope after watching this video you can make the decision whether to support animal chemical testing or not, and I hope you make the right decision. https://youtu.be/4JyzRTo-8MI

Most of us don’t know that the stickers attached to the fruits and vegetables, are there for more than just scanning the price. The PLU code, or the Price Lookup Number on the sticker, can help you determine if the product is genetically modified, organic, or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides or herbicides. A four-digit code beginning with a 3, or a 4 means the produce is probably conventionally grown. The last digits of the code represent the kind of the fruit, or vegetable you are buying. For example, bananas are labeled with the code of 4-0-1-1. A five-digit code that starts with a "8", means the product is genetically modified. The label on genetically modified tomato would contain the number 8-4-8-0-5. A five-digit code that starts with a "9", means the product is organic. Organic bananas are labeled as 9-4-0-1-1. EWG, the Environmental Working Group, analyzed pesticide residue testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and FDA, to come up with rankings for these popular fresh produce items. The EWG notes that 99% of apples, 98% of peaches, and 97% of nectarines, all tested positive for at least one pesticide residue, while the average white potato had more pesticides by weight than any other produce! The following foods have very high pesticide loads, and should always be purchased organic, or grow yourself! Apples, Celery, Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Grapes, Hot Peppers, Nectarines, Peaches, Potatoes, Spinach, Strawberries, Sweet Bell Peppers, Kale or Collard Greens, and Summer Squash. The following foods were found by EWG to be relatively low in pesticide residue. They may be good conventional options for those on a budget. Asparagus, Avocados, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Non-GMO Sweet Corn, Eggplant, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Mangoes, Mushrooms, Onions, Non-GMO Papayas, Pineapples, Sweet Peas and Sweet Potatoes. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that the consumption of pesticides can lead to health problems such as, birth defects, nerve damage, cancer, and other effects that might occur over a long period of time. Children are especially at risk of harm from pesticides. Therefore, please consume organic or conventional grown or self-grown fruits and vegetables. https://youtu.be/58Z-nOA1_Iw

Sugar is a crystal, it doesn't have genes -- so why are GMO opponents attacking it? We've all seen how popular it is for food producers to cater to marketing fads: anti-GMO, gluten free, hormone free -- but there's one in particular that seems to make no sense at all: GMO-free sugar. Sugar is a crystal, it doesn't have genes, so how can it be genetically modified? Only plants and animals have genes, and sugar is neither of those. So are marketers who advertise their sugar as being GMO-free just pulling our legs? Short answer: Yes! And no. No, because they're right, all sugar is GMO-free, because sugar doesn't have genes and there can be no such thing as GMO sugar. So yes, they are basically being dishonest by implying that some sugar had its genes modified. Not true. However, we do get our sugar from plants: basically either sugarcane or sugar beets. The plants are crushed, water is added, and it's boiled, evaporated, and filtered until we have just pure sugar crystals left. Refined white sugar has gone through the most filtering and centrifuging to separate out all the impurities, so it consists of nothing but pure white sugar crystals. Products like raw sugar are not filtered as much, so they get their brown color from molasses and leftover plant material which may contain plant cells and their genes. Sugarcane is NOT genetically modified, and most sugar beets in the United States and Canada ARE genetically modified, which lets farmers grow a lot more at less expense. When sugar producers slap a non-GMO label on their product, that label says nothing at all about the sugar inside; what it does tell you (generally) is whether the sugar was sourced from sugarcane or sugar beets. It's a little like buying software and the label telling you what server it was downloaded from. Molecule for molecule, the product itself is identical, regardless of its source. Even though the lack of genes in sugar is an obvious science fact, consumer pressure has prompted repeated testing which has shown there is no nutritional or chemical difference. The bottom line is that no refined white sugar is genetically modified, because sugar has no genes. If, for some reason, you still feel you need to avoid having any genes in your sugar, then all you need to do is avoid raw sugar with its plant cell contaminants, and stick with refined white sugar for the purest, sweetest experience. The price look-up (PLU) code system used by most produce distributors has the side benefit of allowing consumers to identify conventional and organic produce at the grocery store. Even though the defeat of Proposition 37 means that genetically engineered information will not be added to labels at this time, PLU codes do have the potential to identify genetically engineered produce. This video shows you how to read PLU codes to unlock the information that is already right at your fingertips. Written and Produced by Mike Kahn.

https://www.esticastresearch.com/market-reports/food-safety-testing-market As per the report “Global Food Safety Testing Market, by contaminant tested ( Pathogens, GMO, Pesticides), by technology (conventional and unconventional), Industry Trends, Estimation & Forecast, 2016-2024” The global food safety testing market was valued at $12.14 billion in 2016, and is projected to reach $21.43 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2017 to 2024. In 2016, the pathogen testing segment generated the highest revenue share in the global food safety testing market. Among major regions, North American food safety testing market was the highest revenue generating market valued at $4.5 billion in 2016. “The demand for genetically modified food products such as crops, fruits, animal products and vegetables is booming in the market. Most of the crops we consume are actually genetically modified, as they offer better quality, high yields, and pest resisting ability, but, besides this, genetic modification can also lead to a decrement in nutritional values and an increment in toxicity of the food. Hence, GMO food product testing will experience the highest growth in the upcoming future “

Buy Cook's Science today: http://amzn.to/212U0nC The Science of Good Cooking: http://amzn.to/1O8oGw7 The How Can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook: http://amzn.to/1iT7VuV Buy our winning food processor: https://amzn.to/2yFTwRl What is gluten, and what does it mean to be cooking with gluten? See and feel gluten with this simple kitchen experiment. GLUTEN FACTS: Gluten—an elastic protein that has the ability to trap air, much like a balloon—is formed when two important proteins in wheat flour, glutenin and gliadin, bond together in the presence of water. Whether we are trying to create more of it in rustic bread or pizza dough or working to limit its development for tender baked goods like cakes and muffins, there's no denying gluten's importance. But beyond our conceptual understanding of it, is there a more tangible way to see and feel gluten? We ran a simple experiment to find out. We made two basic doughs by mixing flour and water in a food processor until a smooth ball formed. For one dough we used cake flour, which contains between 6 and 8 percent protein, and for the other one we used bread flour, which usually runs from 12 to 14 percent protein. After making the doughs, we placed each in a mesh strainer and massaged them under running water to wash away all of the starch. Once the water ran clear (a sign that the starch was gone), we were left with two piles of essentially pure gluten. The differences in the appearance and texture of the two doughs were a dramatic confirmation of the profound impact of gluten. genetically Modified Foods (GMOs): The rapidly growing industry of genetically modified crops are infiltrating our food supply at an alarming rate. More than 90% of our corn and soy are now genetically modified. This fairly new practice is the source of many debates. Experts agree that adequate testing was not done before GMO foods were added to the ingredient listing of thousands of products. In other words, no one – including the growers and manufacturers of GMO foods – knows the long-term effect they will have on human health. Look for GMO-free labels whenever possible or buy organic (which always means a product is not genetically modified). # CAUSECANCER, #CANCER #MAINCAUSEOFCANCER Subscribe to our channel ► https://goo.gl/MjVjK9

In a globalized food market with increasing demand for food research and monitoring, there is a need for streamlined testing solutions that are sensitive, accurate, and easy to use with a variety of starting materials. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is gaining importance as a complementary tool to established microbial culture-based methods and ELISA-based assays prevalent in the food testing sector. Combined with dedicated sample preparation kits, real-time PCR assays deliver rapid results from a broad spectrum of sample materials and simplify the testing process.

I’ve never received more hate male from SCIQ fans than that one time I talked about Bernie Sanders and GMO labeling. So before I start – please try not to hate me, and try not to throw anything at the screen. Ok, so Bernie Sanders home state of Vermont introduced a law in 2014 – that requires labels on products containing genetically engineered ingredients. This law is effective July 1, 2016. Bernie’s argument is that consumers have a right to know what’s in their food, and that’s true. People should be conscious and responsible with the choices the food choices they’re making. We have a right to know what ingredients are in there, how many calories, how much sodium, how much fat, how many vitamins. There’s other questions we as smart consumers may have. [We asked some people in New York what additional information should be on a label] What breed of chicken is this? is it fresh or was it once frozen? What pesticides were used on this apple? Are these bananas contributing to civil unrest in latin America Are the cows who make this product being treated fairly? I think whether or not a product is genetically modified falls into the same group of concerns as whether it is from ethical sources. Good to know. But it’s not more important than other information. So why do we get so upset by GMOs? Why do we pass a law labeling GMOs food and not one for food that causes deforestation, or food that comes from inhumane animal conditions? I think the reason we get so worked up is because we don’t really understand the science. Putting a label on something suggests it’s a warning, that the product is not as good – otherwise why would we need a label. But GMO crops are nutritionally the same - or they would never have been approved by the FDA. And they’re far safer than a lot of other stuff we do in agriculture - Testing of a new GM crop variety takes over 10 years, and is the most rigorous testing of any food on the market. There’s no research to show that a crop is less healthy, has more toxins, or is more likely to cause allergies, just because it is genetically modified – a basic knowledge of how DNA works will show us this. Even Bernie agrees with me. He says on FeelTheBern.org that Bernie supports allowing states to require labels on foods containing “genetically modified organisms” (GMOs) based on the consumer’s right-to-know, but does not believe that GMOs are necessarily bad. I get really distressed when otherwise intelligent, rational people come out swinging when it comes to GMOs so I hope you’ll keep an open mind So we do have a right to be informed, and we are being informed. But by ignoring all the other issues with agriculture so we can demonize GMOs, we’re actually confusing the public, not informing them. Before you start sending me one off studies about bees or glyphosate, just remember to check - Is your study from a peer reviewed, reputable academic source, Let us know what you think about GMO labelling in the comments below. Follow me on these as well! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005166796282 https://twitter.com/Questionurfood http://instagram.com/questionyourfood/ Corn and Soybeans are the top two genetically modified crops. In certain states growing soybeans and corn, figures as high as 98% of soybeans and 96% of corn are genetically modified according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) for the year 2012. These are also the two largest crops grown in the United States. What does this mean and what is the genetic modification? Large biotech companies like Monsanto are a leader in modifying seeds so they are resistant to common problems like drought, oversaturation, pest control, weed control etc. Using modified crops also allows the farmer to spray certain chemicals that won’t damage their crops but handle unwanted issues like weeds. It’s all legal, and there are constant debates over the safety of these methods. Corn and soy are in many everyday items. Soy lecithin, soybean oil, or soy in general seem like they are in everything, as well as corn and corn products. Because of the high percentage of GMO (genetically modified organism) corn and soy, if you are not buying these labeled as organic (or labeled as GMO free) then it is most likely genetically modified. As of today, food produced with GMO’s does not need to be labeled as containing GMO ingredients. If you are concerned about GMO corn and soy you can eliminate a good amount of GMO’s from your diet fairly easily by reading labels and ingredients carefully. Certified organic is GMO free. Some food’s might not be labeled organic, but could have a label stating GMO free, or non GMO ingredients used. However, it is worth noting that there is no GMO testing or regulation by the government at this time.
