Guyana struggles against rising seas
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe The low-lying Carribean nation of Guyana is on the frontline in the battle against rising seas. The majority of Guyana's population lives on its coastline, which is below sea level and heavy rainfall often makes things much worse. Now this poor nation spends five to six million dollars a year - money it can ill afford - building up damaged sea walls, maintaining sluice gates which close when the tide is high and purchasing new equipment to pump the water back out to sea when the tide is low. Al Jazeera's John Terrett reports from Georgetown. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' Reaching more than 270 million households in over 140 countries across the globe, our viewers trust Al Jazeera English to keep them informed, inspired, and entertained. Our impartial, fact-based reporting wins worldwide praise and respect. It is our unique brand of journalism that the world has come to rely on. Walking along the Georgetown, Guyana, Seawall after Sunset & on Beach to Marriott Hotel
After sunset on a Sunday evening, I finish my stroll along the seawall in Georgetown, Guyana, passing through a small carnival. I walk along the small beach and then back to the lovely new Marriott Hotel, what I believe is the first American corporate-owned hotel in Guyana.

Walking along the Georgetown, Guyana, Seawall at Sunset
I stroll along the seawall of Georgetown, Guyana, as the sun sets on a Sunday evening. The seawall is a popular weekend hangout spot. It’s disappointing to see large amounts of garbage that has washed ashore and hasn’t been cleared up.

Real Guyana - #3 - The Georgetown Sea Walls - (Then and Now)
If you only happened to be born within the last 30years you will recall at one point we thought the sea walls were shabby. Judging from the extent to which they have been allowed to deteriorate today it seems Guyanese never knew how good they had it. To put our futures in clear perspective is to we must have a deep understanding with our past. On looking at some of the images of the seawalls from the 1900s it is even more clear, that both governments work have brought us to this point. Both the PNC and the PPP have now had and as we the population watch on and participate in the senseless conflict we observe in parliament the extent of our environmental degradation has become shocking. If the government are only willing to clean the seawalls and the beaches for the tourists they're spending $4billion trying to attract with a fancy hotel then it means you and I are now second class. It means we don't deserve these things, a decent environment to contribute to the physical and mental well being of our families...of our children. It means this is how we're conditioning the new generation of our nation to think and operate. Having grown up in a world where junkies and vagrants line the streets everywhere they go, and 80% of our streets are absolutely filthy from end to end, and substandard work is just pushed down our throats. What kind of ethic will they have? We fear for the future, our country is being neglected. It's not that Guyana will never need billion dollar investments luxury hotels... but there is so much to take care of for the ordinary population, whose salaries the government cry out to find the cash for as in the case of the Linden nurses. There are so many deficient social systems which need an influx of capitol... our monuments are poorly maintained, and the very attractions the ministry of tourism tout on the internet are mostly filthy and uninviting... Greed will be the end of us all. Real Eyepass
