What Is A Healthy Body Fat Percentage For Men? (Charts & Ranges)

Getting to the ideal body fat percentage for males requires hard work, dedication and a structured plan that you can work on with accountability. First off, I want to clear up any confusion you might have about BMI and Body fat percentage. These two are often confused as measuring the same thing. Basically, BMI is a ratio figure between your height and weight. To get your BMI result using the metric system, you simply divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, then divide the result by your height again. For example: a 73kg man who is 1.78m tall would do the below: 73 / 1.78 / 1.78 = 23.04 BMI Using pounds and inches, you can use the following formula: [weight (lb) / height (in) / height (in)] x 703 As you can see from the formulae above, there is nothing factored for age or amount of body fat. Therefore, a 73kg man could have 10% or 30% body fat and still fall in the exact same BMI range. In reality, they are both very different in terms of physical appearance and most likely physical health. Body fat percentage is exactly what it suggests. It’s the amount of body fat you have on your body. This is obviously completely exclusive to each person, so is a much better indicator than BMI. Low body fat will show more muscle definition so it will depend on what your goals are and help you reach an ideal body fat percentage for males. When it comes to a healthy body fat percentage men often presume that getting into low single digits is the way to go. However, getting that low not only takes extreme dedication but also removes much-needed padding that protects your body. Gaining weight as a skinny person is not easy. It is frustrating to eat a lot but still not gain weight. One thing that skinny people do not know is that they have a fast metabolism which makes it hard for them to gain weight. A fast metabolism means that your body burns all the calories you eat. As a skinny person trying to gain weight, you have to eat a lot more than your metabolism can handle. Naturally, creating a caloric surplus in your body will make you gain weight. Probably you are skinny due to lack of knowledge of what it takes to gain weight. Below are top five tips that will help you gain weight: 5. Eat more food The leading trick to gain weight is to consume more calories than your body can burn. The mistake that most people do is to go by their feelings. Your metabolism could be much faster than you think. You need to know how much calories your body needs for you to gain weight. Keep track of everything you eat to know how much calories you consume every day. You might overestimate your calorie intake if you go with your feelings. In the first week, you will have difficulties eating all the required calories for you to gain weight. After maybe two weeks, your stomach will stretch and start getting hungry more often. 4. Track your progress Weigh yourself every week to check how you are progressing. Malnourished people will gain weight quickly in the first week due to increased bowel content and weight from the extra water as well. Continue eating the same if you gain weight; if you do not gain weight, you will have to keep adding more calories to your daily intake every week until you gain weight. You should note that the food that makes you gain the first 10kg will not make you gain the next 10kg. A skinny person with less muscle mass burns fewer calories than one with a bigger muscle mass. Thus, a person with no muscles will require fewer calories to gain weight as opposed to a more masculine person. 3. Eat more protein Protein is necessary for muscle building and recovery. The following are the best protein sources for gaining weight: whole eggs, chicken breast, tuna, cheese, and steaks. For you to build your body muscles, you will require at least 1g of proteins per 1lb of body-weight per day. However, you should have in mind that some people will not gain weight or muscles without gaining fat as well. 2. Eat more meals You have been eating little food for years. Thus your stomach is small. If you are required to take at least 1500 calories a day for you to gain weight, it will be easier if you take 300 calories in 5 meals than having 500 calories in 3 meals. Create yourself a bigger eating window. With eight sleeping hours, you are left with 16 hours to eat. Make a schedule of how you will have the five meals in those 16 hours. 1. Training Lifting weights is good for people trying to gain weight since it triggers the body to build muscle mass. If you do not train, the excess calories that do not burn will be stored as fat around your waistline. Your goal is to be muscular and not chubby. Therefore you will need to train. Remember, the more you train, the more calories you will burn and therefore the more calories you will require creating a caloric surplus. Physical fitness is generally achieved through proper nutrition, moderate-vigorous physical exercise, and sufficient rest. Before the industrial revolution, fitness was defined as the capacity to carry out the day’s activities without undue fatigue. However, with automation and changes in lifestyles physical fitness is now considered a measure of the body's ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations. Fitness is defined as the quality or state of being fit. Around 1950, perhaps consistent with the Industrial Revolution and the treatise of World War II, the term "fitness" increased in western vernacular by a factor of ten. Modern definition of fitness describe either a person or machine's ability to perform a specific function or a holistic definition of human adaptability to cope with various situations. This has led to an interrelation of human fitness and attractiveness which has mobilized global fitness and fitness equipment industries. Regarding specific function, fitness is attributed to person who possess significant aerobic or anaerobic ability, i.e. strength or endurance. A holistic definition of fitness is described by Greg Glassman in the CrossFit journal as an increased work capacity across broad times and modal domains; mastery of several attributes of fitness including strength, endurance, power, speed, balance and coordination and being able to improve the amount of work done in a given time with any of these domains. A well rounded fitness program will improve a person in all aspects of fitness, rather than one, such as only cardio/respiratory endurance or only weight training. A comprehensive fitness program tailored to an individual typically focuses on one or more specific skills, and on age- or health-related needs such as bone health. Many sources also cite mental, social and emotional health as an important part of overall fitness. This is often presented in textbooks as a triangle made up of three points, which represent physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Physical fitness can also prevent or treat many chronic health conditions brought on by unhealthy lifestyle or aging. Working out can also help some people sleep better and possibly alleviate some mood disorders in certain individuals. Developing research has demonstrated that many of the benefits of exercise are mediated through the role of skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ. That is, contracting muscles release multiple substances known as myokines which promote the growth of new tissue, tissue repair, and various anti-inflammatory functions, which in turn reduce the risk of developing various inflammatory diseases. "What should I eat" or "How much should I weigh?" Today I'll be answering how much you should weigh and the rest of my videos will discuss the more complicated issue of what you should eat. I made this the first video in my What Matters for Healthy Weight Loss Series because I thought you should know how much you should weigh before you try to lose weight. I want to give people a target weight range to shoot for, so that I don't have a bunch of people that are already at a healthy weight trying to lose weight in an unhealthy way. I know our culture's version of beauty is sickly skinny and air brushed to some twisted version of ideal. I beg you to put your health first. Before I get into anything else, I want to say that if you are overweight, you don't have to get into the ideal body weight range to make a difference in your health. For heavier people, losing just 10% of your body weight can make a huge difference in your health. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good -- Just because it may not be realistic for you to reach and ideal weight, you can still do a lot for your health. So lets get to answering how much you should weigh. Several factors play into how much you should weigh like your age, gender, height, muscle mass, frame size, and current weight. Height in Meters^2 1. Age 2. Gender 3. Height 4. Muscle Mass 5. Frame Size 6. Current Weight The most popular indicator for showing what a healthy weight is Body Mass Index or BMI. BMI is a ratio of your height to weight using the following equation. BMI = Weight in Kilograms (Height in meters)^2 BMI equals weight in kilograms over height in meters squared. Here is a BMI chart so that you can check your BMI. For adults a healthy BMI is considered from 18.5 to 25. Under 18.5 is considered underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30 is considered obese. A lot of people complain that BMI isn't accurate because we know someone that clearly isn't unhealthy and overweight but is classified as overweight by BMI. And they are right, BMI isn't perfect because it doesn't account for age, gender, muscle mass, and frame size. It only uses height and weight so it shouldn't be used for the individual, for you -- however, when looking at large groups of people and collecting thousand of BMIs, it is a good indicator of body fat. So I just said that BMI isn't good for the individual, so how do you know what a healthy weight is for you? The best way to determine a healthy weight for you is to calculate your ideal body weight. The equation for ideal body weight takes weight, height, gender, and frame size into account so it's much better than BMI. First I want you to get an idea of your frame size. Wrap your thumb and middle finger around the top part of your wrist, just above the bump. If you can't get your fingers around your wrist all the way, you have a large frame size. If you can barely touch your thumb and finger, you have a medium frame size. If your fingers overlap, then you have a small frame size. Now that you know your frame size, calculate your ideal body weight with the following equation: Women: 100 lbs + (5 lbs x height in inches over 5 feet tall) +- 10% Men: 106 + (6 lbs x height in inches over 5 feet tall) +- 10% So for example, a 5'5' woman has an ideal body weight of 125 lbs plus or minus 10 percent, which comes out to a weight of 112-138 lbs. If this woman has a small frame size, a healthy weight might be closer to the lower range of that weight range. A larger frame would be at the high end of the weight range. A medium frame size closer to the middle. Also, if this woman was muscular, like an athlete, she would be healthy on the higher end of this weight range or even slightly above this weight range because the extra weight is muscle. A woman over the age of 65, especially over the age of 75, would be healthier at the high end of this weight range because older people have less muscle mass and if they carry a little extra weight, then it's actually healthier because it protects them from losing as much muscle mass as they age. Try not to get attached to one specific number. A healthy weight is always a range. I hope this has given you a little more insight into what a healthy weight is for you! I would like to say that body fat percentage and amount of muscle mass are also very useful because it is possible for you to be at a healthy weight and still have too much body fat, but they are hard to determine because more of the easy tests like the scales that tell you your bodyfat percentage aren't very accurate. If you do have access to accurate body fat testing, here is a reference table for body fat percentages:

If you're training at home or going to the gym without consulting a trainer, it’s all too easy to include exercises in your workout that target all the wrong areas and give results you didn’t ask for. So which exercises should you avoid if you want to achieve a feminine physique? The first group of exercises you should avoid is exercises that build up the obliques. Your obliques are connected to your lower ribs and go down to your pubic bone, and they create the shape of our body. If you bulk these muscles up, you can forget about having that hour-glass figure of your dreams. There's another group of exercises you should stay away from, and that's exercises that bulk up the neck and shoulders. Working out these muscles can be pretty tricky. You see, the trapezius muscle is a large triangular muscle that spans the upper back, neck, and shoulders. If you work this muscle too hard, you end up losing a thin feminine neck and gaining a wide masculine back. The last group of exercises that'll spoil your pursuit of a feminine figure are exercises that make your legs bigger. You should remember that there are no isolated exercises for the glutes. So when you’re working out your bum muscles with squats, for example, you’re also involving your legs and especially your quads. It sounds nice and effective if you’re after wide shoulders, but if you want smaller, more feminine shoulders, this one isn’t for you. -Be sure to choose weights that are comfortable for you, and don’t go for the heavy ones thinking they’ll give you your desired results faster. On the contrary, you can get seriously injured -The wrong positioning of your arms will inevitably involve the trapezius muscle, so you’re better off not risking it and just doing standing tricep extensions instead. -Heavy weights can not only ruin your figure, they also do harm to your knees and lower back. So ditch the weights or at least replace them with small ones. -There are tons of ways you can do leg extensions, but none of them will help you slim down your hips. They only bulk up your quads. -This unnatural position of the body involves not only targeted muscles but also the joints that support them. Another great thing about avocados that was discovered during a study from The Ohio State University at Columbus is that avocados help you absorb more cartenoids from fruits and vegetables, up to 15x more to be exact. So not only will avocados help you burn fat, but you'll also be strengthening your immune system and absorbing more cancer fighting cartenoids than ever. Next we have eggs. Eggs are great to incorporate into your diet plan because they’re high in protein, high in healthy fats and they can help you feel full for a very low amount of total calories. Eggs are also one of the most bioavailable sources of protein out there. Meaning that your body can very efficiently digest, absorb, and assimilate the protein found in eggs. Having a solid protein source like eggs in your diet will help you prevent muscle loss while you eat less calories to create enough of a deficit to burn fat. Lets move on to one of the best fruits you can eat while trying to lose belly fat...berries. Compared to most other fruits berries are very low in carbohydrates, while being full in vitamins and antioxidants. Blueberries are going to be a bit higher in carbs, so to keep calories low stick with the other 3. The next food isn't really a food, but instead its a drink that's been proven very effective at helping you fight that belly fat...apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has been shown to help people lose weight and waist circumference. These aren't they typical animal studies that you constantly see that don't necessarily guarantee the same results for people. Instead these are human studies. One of these studies was 12 weeks long and it demonstrated that obese individuals could lose anywhere from 2.6 to 3.7 pounds just by consuming 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per day. It has also been shown to improve blood sugar spikes after meals, and it can help increase fullness after a meal. In fact one study showed that taking apple cider vinegar with a high carb meal could result in people eating 200 to 275 less calories for the day. Keep in mind, you want to make sure that you dilute only one to two tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar in water. Don't drink it straight up. Next I have another high protein food for you and that's tuna. Tuna is a very lean fish that's pretty much entirely made up of protein. This makes tuna a great option to increase protein intake without increasing calorie intake too much. The important thing is if you're buying canned tuna you want to make sure you get the tuna in water not oil. If you get it in oil then all the extra calories that you save from this low fat fish will be canceled out. It’s true men lose weight faster than women. But why? Why do men tend to lose more quickly than women? Learn why with Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND in this week’s healthy eating video. Too many women figure that they’re ‘not trying hard enough’ to lose weight. But it usually isn’t that they aren’t doing enough – or that men are trying harder. It really comes down to the fact that men and women are simply made differently – and those differences have a big impact on weight loss rates. There are three main reasons why men lose weight faster than women. It has to do with body size, body composition, and how they burn calories. The larger a person is, the more cells they have and the more calories it takes to maintain body size. Men tend to be larger than women, so they need more calories to maintain their weight. Men tend to have more lean body mass than women do so their body composition is different as well. Lean body mass is simply everything that’s not fat – so this component includes your bones, organs, muscles, ligaments, tendons and fluids. Every pound of lean body mass you have burns about fourteen calories a day or about thirty calories per kilo. Since men tend to have more lean body mass than women do, their daily calorie burn is higher. That alone puts men at an advantage when it comes to weight-loss because they’re able to burn more calories. Men also burn more calories than women do when exercising. This is because it takes more calories to move a larger body through space. Since men tend to be larger than women, it takes more calories to do the same amount of exercise at the same intensity. Also, because men burn more calories at rest it does make it a little easier for them to lose weight. For example, a heavy-set guy would need about 2,500 calories for him to maintain his weight. If he wanted to lose weight, he can cut 1,000 calories out of his daily intake, and only consume 1,500 calories per day. This is a reasonable amount of food. With this calorie deficit he can pretty easily lose about two pounds a week. A women on the other hand who maintains her weight on 1,600 calories per day wouldn’t be able to cut so many calories out of her daily intake. It’s not safe to cut down below 1,200 calories per day. So, if she goes from 1,600 to 1,200 calories a day, she’s only cutting out 400 calories a day. At a 400 calorie a day deficit, she’ll be lucky if she loses about half a pound per week.
