Analytical Functions in oracle explained with real examples

This video explains analytical functions and how they are implemented in real projects. Analytical functions are somewhat similar to aggregate functions,but they offer much more. Why use analytical function ? They allow you to write fast and concise queries which otherwise will involve self join and long processing times They allow you to perform aggregate functions independently on sets of partitions. You can access values from previous rows in current row and you can restrict the window on which you want to apply this analytical function. I have given additional practice exercises along with the dataset so that you can comfortably work with analytical functions. Oracle CURRENT_TIMESTAMP Function

Just like the CURRENT_DATE function, it uses the session time zone, which is where you logged in from. This could be different to the database time zone. The syntax of the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP function is: CURRENT_TIMESTAMP ( [precision] ) The return type of this function is TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE. The precision parameter is optional, and it lets you specify the number of fractional seconds to return. If this is omitted, it uses the default of 6. It’s different to the SYSTIMESTAMP function, because CURRENT_TIMESTAMP returns the session timezone, and SYSTIMESTAMP returns the database time zone. So, if I’m logging in from Melbourne, Australia, and the database is in London, England, then the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP will return a date and time that’s 10 hours ahead of SYSTIMESTAMP, and in a different time zone. It may be on the same day, or it could be a different day, depending on when I run the function. You can perform arithmetic on this function just like any other date value (e.g. CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 7 for 7 days ago). However, it might be better to use interval data types so you can keep the original data type. It’s useful for comparing text or string values that may have mixed case, such as user input or data from different tables. The opposite of the UPPER function is the LOWER function (which converts to lower case). The syntax of UPPER is: UPPER(input_string) The input_string is the string value to convert to an upper case value. It can be any of CHAR, VARCHAR2, NCHAR, NVARCHAR2, CLOB, or NCLOB. The return type is the same as the input type. You can use the UPPER function in a WHERE clause. However, unless you have a function-based index on the column, any indexes won’t be used. For example, if you have an index on first_name, a query that uses “WHERE UPPER(first_name)” won’t use this index. You’ll have to create an index on the UPPER(first_name) for this to be used. It’s not required, but it’s just something to keep in mind. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make use of lead function in oracle sql PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

Notice we have set an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause to ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING This tells the LAST_VALUE function that it's window starts at the first row and ends at the last row in the result set. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, LAST_VALUE(Name) OVER (ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING) AS LastValue FROM Employees LAST_VALUE function example with partitions : In the following example, LAST_VALUE function returns the name of the highest paid employee from the respective partition. ORACLE/PLSQL: COALESCE FUNCTION The Oracle/PLSQL COALESCE function returns the first non-null expression in the list. If all expressions evaluate to null, then the COALESCE function will return null. The syntax for the Oracle/PLSQL COALESCE function is: coalesce( expr1, expr2, ... expr_n ) PARAMETERS: expr1 to expr_n are the expressions to test for non-null values. EXAMPLE: The COALESCE function can be used in Oracle/PLSQL. You could use the coalesce function in a SQL statement as follows: SELECT COALESCE( address1, address2, address3 ) result FROM suppliers; The above COALESCE function is equivalent to the following IF-THEN-ELSE statement: IF address1 is not null THEN result := address1; ELSIF address2 is not null THEN result := address2; ELSIF address3 is not null THEN result := address3; ELSE result := null; END IF; The COALESCE function will compare each value, one by one. Lets apply the same to emp table. We have some NULL values in comm and mgr columns. but not in any other columns. So lets take a example for this 2 columns. Lets compare it with simple insert query Insert into example values ('manish'); Execute it, i think now it's clear that when we perform simple insert DML the inserted value will be the same you provide. Similarly let's try SQL function initcap(); SELECT initcap('hello world') FROM dual; As you see here in result the initial letters of string hello world are in uppercase. Let's do the insert query insert into example values (initcap('hello world')); initial letters of string also are in uppercase. Let's try SQL function lower(); This time we have to write our hello world in all caps. SELECT lower('HELLO WORLD') FROM dual; Execute String totally in lower case. How to Concatenate String and Integer Values in SQL Server ( + Sign vs CONCAT ) - TSQL Tutorial Working with Databases is fun. On daily basis we save data into tables in different columns and often we need to write queries which involve concatenation of multiple columns of different datatypes to produce our final output. In below example we have saved some data into #Customer Table which has Street Address column as string and zip as INT. we want to produce Full Address by concatenating these columns. To concatenate we can use + sign but this works only with String values. So if we have any Integer value/s we have to convert them to String first. We can use Cast or Convert function to convert Integer value to string. Also if there is any Null value among which values we are concatenating , our output will be Null by using + sign. To take care of that part we can use either ISNULL() or Coalesce Function to replace NULL with blank value in SQL Server. In SQL Server 2012 and Later versions, CONCAT function was introduced. You can concatenate multiple values by using this function. Fun part of this function is you don't have to worry about Null outcome as it will Ignore Null values and also you don't have to worry about converting INT into strings, It will take care of that automatically. So if you are using new versions such as 2012 or later, start taking advantage of this function. But there are compromises too—splitting your app up into many tiny functions makes it difficult to reason about your app as a whole. Fault handling and reliability are a real challenge in this environment. In this session, we will build a fault-tolerant serverless app on the Fn platform by showing how the Fn Flow system can apply the saga pattern. First we will discuss the need for an external orchestration system such as Fn Flow as well as why we believe that our approach with Fn Flow is superior to previous attempts to solve this problem. Then we will develop a serverless travel agency booking system that will demonstrate some complex fault-tolerant behavior. We will do all this in Java from the comfort of our own IDE while keeping the code relatively simple and in one place. Finally, we will show how this approach enables us to encapsulate and reuse complex distributed programming patterns, saving us time and money.

Apart from using formulas and formatting, there are two useful Excel features that let you easily clean up. One method is text to columns feature and the other to import external data. The Get External Data tool can be used to import and analyse data from other systems. This tool is also useful for importing data to run your dashboards or do further analysis using pivot tables, etc. Usually you can get data extracts from any system (e.g. “.dat” or “.csv” from Oracle, “.xml” files from SAP, etc.). These can be imported into Excel. Importing External Data also gives you control over the decimals and thousand separator, especially if you’re dealing with international companies. In the US, the decimal is dot and the comma is a thousand separator and in most European countries it’s the other way round, where the comma is a decimal and the dot a thousand separator. It’s always safest to Import it properly with the Excel Data Import wizard! After importing press Ctrl + T to create a table out of it. You can create a pivot table off this one, and when you do, even if you add more data to it, the pivot reflects the new data. In this tutorial, let us learn how to change the calendar from 5 day workweek to 7 day workweek but keeping the project finish Date unchanged in Primavera P6. After working for so many hours to complete the project schedule, you might be getting to know that you should be using the 7 day calendar instead of the 5 day calendar. Changing Activity calendar will change everything. Normally, if we change calendar to 7 Day Workweek, all the activity finish dates will change. Now the sample project in this video is having the finish date as 21st Oct’19 And now, if you change the calendar to 7 day workweek, the Project finish date will be changing to 03rd Jul’19. So, in this tutorial, I will show you How to Change Calendar from 5 Day Workweek to 7 Day Workweek but keeping Project Finish Date unchanged. In the original schedule Step 1 : Go to menu bar and under Enterprise tab , choose User Defined Fields Create a field with title “Finish 5D” and Data Type as Finish Date. And one more user defined field with title “Start 5D” with Data Type as Start Date Step 2 : Go to menu bar and under Tools tab, choose Global Change. Create a global change and name it as “SaveTo5D” and create the rule as if where “blank”, then Start5D= Planned Start date, Finish5D=Planned Finish date and click “Change” button to copy value to “Start 5D” and “Finish 5D” UDF and then click on commit changes, close the window Step 3 : Now Change Activity calendar to 7 Day Workweek. You can change calendar for the first activity then use Fill Down function to apply for the rest activities. Step 4 : Go to menu bar and under Tools tab, choose again the Global Change. Create a Change “Copyfrom5D” and set the rules as If where “blank”, then Planned Start date = Start5D, Project Finish date = Finish5D. Click “Change” button to copy value to Start and Finish date. Now we can see all activity Start and Finish date doesn’t change, only the Activity Duration changes. You can observe that the Project finish Date is still 21-Oct-19. So friends, in this way one can change the calendar without changing the Project Finish Date.
