Whether we talk about goods or services, we can say, usually, people are not just buying a product that solves one of their basic needs. They acquire the benefits and satisfaction they believe they’ll obtain from the product. They are interested in symbols and ideas that help them relate the product to a desired lifestyle and positive expectations about the future. Customers do not simply buy products because they satisfy their needs. Instead, they are interested in becoming clients of firms that offer them a complete product concept – an idea or a promise, if you will. The best products make people happier and create a positive expectation before being consumed.

Line Extensions occur when a company introduces additional items in the same product category under the same brand name such as new flavors, forms, colors, added ingredients, package sizes. This is as opposed to brand extension which is a new product in a totally different product category. Line extension occurs when the company lengthens its product line beyond its current range. The company can extend its product line down-market stretch, up-market stretch, or both ways. Product line extensions are a process where companies with an established brand alter the factors of a product or products to satisfy a refined segment in the market. There are two types of product line extensions, horizontal and vertical. Horizontal extensions consist of keeping the price and quality consistent, but changing factors like flavour or colour to differentiate the products. Vertical extensions consist of increasing and decreasing the quality and price to create inferior and luxury goods. These product line extensions are often closely related to existing products in a brands portfolio, but targets specific brand consumers through this approach. Product line extensions help companies identify and tend to the needs of refined target markets. This approach is a way to try and increase company sales, as well as expanding their brands product portfolio within the desired market. This expansion of a company’s product line also increases their competitive impact, and if applied appropriately, their advantage within the intended market. Practically, when brands apply a product extension strategy they can often benefit from the new addition or additions. This is as extending their product line enlarges their product portfolio and as a result provides the consumers with more variety to choose from. This is positive, as consumers tend to enjoy being able to have choice and through expanding a brands product line, the brand is providing this choice. Investing in this approach is commonly pursued by companies due to their desire to create revenue and to advance their competitive status against rival companies. The advantages when undergoing product line extensions is that the new product or products are commonly closely related to existing products, so the company often has the appropriate production process and capacity to produce the new product or products. Issues facing product line extensions can include company’s investments in the new products without the desired return. The product may come at a loss or may not be able to make enough of the return the company was forecasting for. The new addition could also send confusion to the company’s customer base, and in turn negatively affect the loyalty they have for the brand. This can evidently become a long-term risk in terms of brand image, as consumers may have a new view of the brand as cheap, in the case of downward extension, or unrealistic and unreasonable in terms of upward extension. An issue also connected to the extensions, could result in the production process becoming more and more complicated as a result of new products, this could affect the company’s efficiency and quality in the production of the brands product range. An advantage of extending company product lines is the likely rise in sales, demand and market share. Product line extension increases the amount of different products available to consumers, and through adding more products into the market it keeps consumers interested. This can be helpful in avoiding customer base loss.

In marketing jargon, product lining is offering several related products for sale individually. Unlike product bundling, where several products are combined into one group, which is then offered for sale as a unit, product lining involves offering the products for sale separately. A line can comprise related products of various sizes, types, colors, qualities, or prices. Line depth refers to the number of subcategories a category has. Line consistency refers to how closely related the products that make up the line are. Line vulnerability refers to the percentage of sales or profits that are derived from only a few products in the line. Product lining is a marketing strategy that companies adopt which they offer products in the same product line for sale individually (Krishnamurthi, 2007). Product line is a group of related products defined by their functions and customer market, forming a “line" or category (Neubauer, Steffen & Margaria, 2003). For instance, the variety of coffees that are offered at a café is one of its product lines and it could consist of flat white, cappuccinos, short black, lattes, mochas and etc. Alternatively, Product line of juices and pastries can also be found at a café. In comparison to product bundling, which is a strategy of offering more than one product for promotion as one combined item to create differentiation and greater value, product lining consists of selling different related products individually (Chen, 1997). The products in the product line can come in various sizes, colours, qualities, or prices. The benefits from having a successful product line is the brand identification from customers which result in customer loyalty and multiple purchases (Kekre & Srinivasan, 1990). It increases the likelihood of customers purchasing new products from the company that have just been added into the product line due to the previous satisfying purchases (Krishnamurthi, 2007).

However, pricing decisions inconsistent with a firm’s competitive strategy can be dangerous, which is why companies should address the topic with much caution and attention. There are three important components we need to distinguish in this process. The amount a product costs to be produced, the price customers pay to buy the product, and the value they acquire from the product. If a company aims at cost leadership, then the focus will be costs (trying to keep them as low as possible). The company must offer a price slightly lower than the one offered by competitors. Conversely, if a firm’s strategy is differentiation, then the critical factor will be the value delivered to customers. Costs are not that important, as companies offering a differentiated product can charge more. So, pricing must be coherent with competitive strategy, although sometimes it is tempting to adjust prices to stimulate short-term gains of market share and increases of sales. Top-level managers have to stay focused on the big picture and make coherent decisions in line with the firm’s long-term strategy.

Well, it takes a lot of time and significant energy to build and optimize a distribution channel. And we have to consider several factors that will influence our decision. The best distribution channel is the one that: Delivers a product that customers want. Delivers a product where customers want it. And allows customers to have the product at the right time. A product must be positioned where its target customers are likely to find it. A great-looking store, with prepared sales personnel, and optimal product placing can have a huge impact on sales. Great distribution channels deliver products at the right time. Nobody likes it when an item is out of stock or when there is a long waiting period for its delivery. Companies want to be efficient with the inventory they keep as it represents a cost. An optimized logistics flow can be beneficial for both customers and producers.
