Steven Beebe UNIX Veritas Cluster and Solaris Cluster on Solaris 10

08:24
I have an interview with a big corporation. I created a simple youtube video of my setup of Veritas Cluster Server 6.0 on Solaris 10. It also have Solaris Cluster 3.3 on Solaris 10 also. There is zpool and zfs file system. Inside this is a fully populated zone. The clusters are very simple 2 nodes that don't really do anything cool like Oracle or HTTP or anything. I ran out of time. If anyone has questions on VCS or Solaris Clustering, let me know. Glad to help my fellow Techie. Anyone need some remote Solaris/cluster work? please let me know also... Reasonable rates on 1099 or W2.

What is VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER? What does VERITAS CLUSTER mean? VERITAS CLUSTER meaning

What is VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER? What does VERITAS CLUSTER mean? VERITAS CLUSTER meaning - VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER definition - VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Veritas Cluster Server (rebranded as Veritas Infoscale Availabilty and also known as VCS and also sold bundled in the SFHA product) is a high-availability cluster software for Unix, Linux and Microsoft Windows computer systems, created by Veritas Technologies. It provides application cluster capabilities to systems running other applications, including databases, network file sharing, and electronic commerce websites. High-availability clusters (HAC) improve application availability by failing or switching them over in a group of systems—as opposed to high-performance clusters, which improve application performance by running them on multiple systems simultaneously. Most Veritas Cluster Server implementations attempt to build availability into a cluster, eliminating single points of failure by making use of redundant components like multiple network cards, storage area networks in addition to the use of VCS. Similar products include Fujitsu PRIMECLUSTER, IBM PowerHA System Mirror, HP Serviceguard, IBM Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms (SA MP), Linux-HA, OpenSAF, Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS), NEC ExpressCluster, Red Hat Cluster Suite, SteelEye LifeKeeper and Sun Cluster. VCS is one of the few products in the industry that provides both high availability and disaster recovery across all major operating systems while supporting 40+ major application/replication technologies out of the box. VCS is mostly a user-level clustering software; most of its processes are normal system processes on the systems it operates on, and have no special access to the operating system or kernel functions in the host systems. However, the interconnect (heartbeat) technology used with VCS is a proprietary Layer 2 ethernet-based protocol that is run in the kernel space using kernel modules. The group membership protocol that runs on top of the interconnect heartbeat protocol is also implemented in the kernel. In case of a split brain, the 'fencing' module does the work of arbitration and data protection. Fencing too is implemented as a kernel module. Veritas Cluster Server for Windows is available as a standalone product. It is also sold bundled with Storage Foundation as Storage Foundation HA for Windows; Veritas Cluster Server for AIX, HP-UX, Linux, and Solaris is supplied as a standalone product. The Veritas Cluster Server product includes VCS Management Console, a multi-cluster management software that automates disaster recovery across data centers.

Oracle Solaris Cluster Installation Part 1

05:53
Oracle Solaris Clusteroracle-solaris Its been a while since I wrote an article. In the previous tutorial, I configured IPMP, which is basically NIC bonding in Linux terms. Today, its about installing and configuring Oracle Solaris Cluster. This is a two-node cluster built on SPARC servers, couple of NIC interfaces on each server and a bunch of hard disks. Requirements We have two servers each with following hardware and software. SPARC S7-2. 254 GB RAM. 5 Ethernet Interfaces (net0, net1, net2, net3 & net4). 4 Disks, each of around 500 GB. Oracle Solaris 11. OSC repository ISO image. Howto I am logged in both the nodes as root user. If you have DNS configured, see to it that the nodes are able to resolve each other. In my case, since I do not have DNS, I have placed entries in “/etc/hosts” on both of them. In order to configure a cluster, we first need to configure repository and install necessary packages. The next series of steps should be configured on one node only. I picked node 1 for this cluster setup. You are free to do your own “eeni meeni myni mo“and pick your node. At the time of the write-up, I downloaded “osc-4.3-repo-iso.zip” from Oracle, unzip ISO image inside it and mounted on “/mnt“. I have included the procedure to create a device and mount ISO image on it, in this Clustering video. Now that the image is in place, we build the cluster repository using the following commands. pkg set-publisher -g file:///mnt/repo ha-cluster Once the repository is loaded, we can verify like so. pkg publisher oracle-cluster-repoAs it can be seen, the default Solaris repository and cluster repository are online and ready for next phase that is, installing the cluster. pkg install –accept ha-cluster-full #”–accept” is for accepting license terms and conditions. A successful installation should give the following output. Get more tutorials on http://www.nixfury.com

Oracle Solaris Cluster Configuration Part 1

13:55
Oracle Solaris Clusteroracle-solaris Its been a while since I wrote an article. In the previous tutorial, I installed Oracle Solaris Cluster packages. In this one I am gonna continue with configuring Oracle Solaris Cluster. As mentioned earlier, this is a two-node cluster built on SPARC servers. Howto Let us proceed with the configuration. We need to make sure that cluster services are disabled or offline. Execute the following commands to make sure that they are. svcs -x oracle-cluster-svcs “svcprop” command for RPC Bind service should give “config/local_only boolean false” output. Verify it using the command like so. svcprop network/rpc/bind:default | grep local_only In case the value comes as “true” then follow the steps as shown to make it otherwise. svccfg select network/rpc/bind setprop config/local_only=false quit svcadm refresh network/rpc/bind:default Next we proceed further with setting up Oracle Solaris Cluster. dladm show-phys oracle-cluster-dladm From the output, I chose interfaces net2 and net3. Notice that no IPs have been setup on those two interfaces. We bring up both the interfaces like so. ipadm create-ip net2 ipadm create-ip net3 oracle-cluster-create Let us run the cluster wizard. /usr/cluster/bin/scinstall oracle-cluster-wizard oracle-cluster-wizard oracle-cluster-wizard oracle-cluster-wizard oracle-cluster-wizardoracle-cluster-wizard oracle-cluster-wizard I skipped adding disks to the cluster which I will be doing in a separate tutorial. oracle-cluster-wizardOnce the setup completes, the cluster wizard with reboot both the nodes as part of its finishing move. Once the nodes come up, cluster status can be verified using the command like so. /usr/cluster/bin/cluster status oracle-cluster-wizard Thus were the nodes got married. Check out complete configuration videos with troubleshooting issues. Get more tutorials on http://www.nixfury.com

It is used to improve the availability of software services such as databases, file sharing on a network, electronic commerce websites, or other applications. Sun Cluster operates by having redundant computers or nodes where one or more computers continue to provide service if another fails. Nodes may be located in the same data center or on different continents. Solaris Cluster provides services that remain available even when individual nodes or components of the cluster fail. Solaris Cluster provides two types of HA services: failover services and scalable services. To eliminate single points of failure, a Solaris Cluster configuration has redundant components, including multiple network connections and data storage which is multiply connected via a storage area network. Clustering software such as Solaris Cluster is a key component in a Business Continuity solution, and the Solaris Cluster Geographic Edition was created specifically to address that requirement. Solaris Cluster is an example of kernel-level clustering software. Some of the processes it runs are normal system processes on the systems it operates on, but it does have some special access to operating system or kernel functions in the host systems. In June 2007, Sun released the source code to Solaris Cluster via the OpenSolaris HA Clusters community. SCGE is a management framework that was introduced in August 2005. It enables two Solaris Cluster installations to be managed as a unit, in conjunction with one or more Data replication products, to provide Disaster Recovery for a computer installation. By ensuring that data updates are continuously replicated to a remote site in near-real time, that site can rapidly take over the provision of a service in the event that the entire primary site is lost as a result of a disaster, either natural or man-made. This is a key to minimizing the Recovery point objective (RPO) and Recovery time objective (RTO) for the service. PxFS (Proxy file system) is a distributed, high availability, POSIX compliant filesystem internal to Solaris Cluster nodes. Global devices in Sun Cluster are made possible by PxFS. Solaris Cluster uses software components called agents which monitor an application to detect whether it is operating correctly, and take action if a problem is detected. Agents for common applications are included such as Siebel Systems, SAP Livecache, WebLogic Server, Sun Java Application Server, MySQL, Oracle RAC, Oracle E-Business Suite and Samba among others; there is also a wizard which allows the cluster implementer to create agents for other applications.
