Animated map the world's undersea internet cables

02:23
http://www.businessinsider.com/animated-map-global-fiber-optic-internet-cables-2015-9 ---- 99% of international data is transmitted by wires at the bottom of the ocean called submarine communications cables. In total, they are hundreds of thousands of miles long and can be as deep as Everest Is tall. The cables are installed by special boats called cable-layers. It’s more than a matter of dropping wires with anvils attached to them—the cables must generally be run across flat surfaces of the ocean floor, and care is taken to avoid coral reefs, sunken ships, fish beds, and other ecological habitats and general obstructions. The diameter of a shallow water cable is about the same as a soda can, while deep water cables are much thinner—about the size of a Magic Marker. The size difference is related to simple vulnerability—there’s not much going on 8,000 feet below sea level; consequently, there’s less need for galvanized shielding wire. Cables located at shallow depths are buried beneath the ocean floor using high pressure water jets. Though per-mile prices for installation change depending on total length and destination, running a cable across the ocean invariably costs hundreds of millions of dollars. Sharks are trying to eat the Internet. There’s disagreement as to why, exactly, sharks like gnawing on submarine communications cables. Maybe it has something to do with electromagnetic fields. Maybe they’re just curious. Maybe they’re trying to disrupt our communications infrastructure before mounting a land-based assault. (Haha) The point remains that sharks are chewing on the Internet, and sometimes damage it. In response, companies such as Google are shielding their cables in shark-proof wire wrappers. In 1854, installation began on the first transatlantic telegraph cable, which connected Newfoundland and Ireland. Four years later the first transmission was sent, reading: “Laws, Whitehouse received five minutes signal. Coil signals too weak to relay. Try drive slow and regular. I have put intermediate pulley. Reply by coils.” This is, admittedly, not very inspiring. (“Whitehouse” referred to Wildman Whitehouse, the chief electrician of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, who we’ve discussed previously.) For historical context: During those four years of cable construction, Charles Dickens was still writing novels; Walt Whitman published Leaves of Grass; a small settlement called Dallas was formally incorporated in Texas; and Abraham Lincoln, candidate for the U.S. Senate, gave his “House Divided” speech. As of 2014, there are 285 communications cables at the bottom of the ocean, and 22 of them are not yet in use. These are called “dark cables.” (Once they’re switched on, they’re said to be “lit.”) Submarine cables have a life expectancy of 25 years, during which time they are considered economically viable from a capacity standpoint. Over the last decade, however, global data consumption has exploded. In 2013, Internet traffic was 5 gigabytes per capita; this number is expected to reach 14 gigabytes per capita by 2018. Such an increase would obviously pose a capacity problem and require more frequent cable upgrades. However, new techniques in phase modulation and improvements in submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) have boosted capacity in some places by as much as 8000%. The wires we have are more than ready for the traffic to come.

Two Koreas discuss restoring military communication lines

01:55
남북군사실무접촉 오늘 개최...軍통신선 복구논의 Our top story this afternoon.. South and North Korea are holding working-level military talks for restoring their communication lines. For more, let's connect to our Park Hee-jun. Hee-jun, what are we hearing so far? Ji-yoon. The inter-Korean military talks began at around 10AM, Korea time -- a couple of hours ago. They're being held at the CIQ, or the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Office located in Paju, Gyeonggi-do Province,... just south of the inter-Korean border. The South Korean delegation is led by Army Colonel Cho Yong-geun,... and the North Korean delegation by Colonel Om Chang-nam. They're a follow-up to the general-level negotiations held earlier this month. The two sides are said to be discussing fully reconnecting their military communications channels in the East Sea and West Sea districts. The West Sea channel was severed in 2016 after the shutdown of the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex. It was restored in January for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics,... but it's only capable of phone communication -- that is verbal messages only. The optic cable lines need to be recovered for the two sides to exchange faxes. As for the East Sea communication lines,... they were suspended in 2011 amid military tensions. On top of that,... they were later destroyed in a wildfire. The two sides are also likely to talk about reactivating a naval communication line, that hasn't been used for a decade. These lines, once restored,... will help the two Koreas avoid possible military conflict, caused by misunderstandings. These talks are the first of their kind in several years,... since the deadly attack on the South Korean warship Cheonan in 2010 and the shelling of Yeonpyeong-do Island later in the same year. The talks are part of ongoing efforts by the two Koreas to implement the Panmunjom Declaration from the April 27th inter-Korean summit, which includes reducing military tension and building trust. The discussions have even more meaning as today marks the 68th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. That's all I have for now. Back to you, Ji-yoon. Shark Bites Fiber Optic Cables Undersea 15.8.2014

01:22
Google is reinforcing its underwater fibre-optic cables to protect against future shark attacks Google is reinforcing its private underwater fibre-optic cables with an extra layer of protective material in order to protect its 100,000 miles of cables from sharks. Sharks and other fish are attracted to the cables, thought by some to be due to the electromagnetic signals emitted by the lines, but they are easily damaged. The cables already have existing protective materials designed to shelter them from the various dangers of the environment, but will now be coated with a 'Kevlar-like' material to provide even more protection. Fibre-optic cables are made of strands of glass, and are thus much less durable than copper cables. Google wants to prevent its own cables from sustaining further damage after seeing underwater surveillance footage of sharks biting the cables. IT Pro has contacted Google for more information on the plans and will update the story as soon as we know more.

5 Gosho Lines Which Can Our Life Happy

03:11
5. One who listens to even a sentence or phrase of the sutra and cherishes it deep in one’s heart may be likened to a ship that crosses the sea of the sufferings of birth and death. The Great Teacher Miao-lo stated, Even a single phrase cherished deep in one’s heart will without fail help one reach the opposite shore. From Gosho "A Ship to Cross the Sea of Suffering" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume I, page 33) 4. "There is definitely something extraordinary in the ebb and flow of the tide, the rising and setting of the moon, and the way in which summer, autumn, winter, and spring give way to each other. Something uncommon also occurs when an ordinary person attains Buddhahood. At such a time, the three obstacles and four devils will invariably appear, and the wise will rejoice while the foolish will retreat." From Gosho "The Three Obstacles and Four Devils" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume I, page 367) 3. "And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it, though one might bind up the sky, though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west, it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered." From Gosho "On Prayer" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume I, page 345) 2. "When in one’s heart one takes faith in Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the heart becomes a dwelling and Shakyamuni Buddha takes up residence there. At first one is not aware of this, but gradually, as the months go by, the Buddha in the heart begins to appear as in a dream, and one’s heart becomes bit by bit ever more joyful. " From Gosho "The Buddha Resides in a Pure Heart" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume II, page 885) 1. "Now, if you wish to attain Buddhahood, you have only to lower the banner of your arrogance, cast aside the staff of your anger, and devote yourself exclusively to the one vehicle of the Lotus Sutra. Worldly fame and profit are mere baubles of your present existence, and arrogance and prejudice are ties that will fetter you in the next one. Ah, you should be ashamed of them! And you should fear them, too!" From Gosho "Embracing the Lotus Sutra" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin Volume I, page 58-59)

"Alien Antenna" Found On Sea Floor In Antarctica?

04:39
Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory We Are Also On Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory Antarctica, one of the world’s most mysterious continents, home to one of the largest and driest deserts on the planet, covering an area of around 5 and a half million square miles. If there was anywhere on earth where crashed, preserved, ancient alien technologies could still be found, it would be here. An untouched landscape which may in all possibility be the final resting place of as yet, un-retrieved relics, which have been stranded there to this day. The deep sea which surrounds Antarctic for example, are some of the most difficult and inhospitable environments to explore anywhere. Far away from the modern world, deep within the frigid, pitch black waters of this massive chunk of ice, where our next discovery was miraculously made. An out of place artefact which is still resting at the bottom of this sea. Known as the Eltanin Antenna, if it wasn’t for the brute strength of the nearly 2000 tonne ice breaking vessel known as the Eltanin, we may never have found it. Initially a US Navy as a cargo-carrying icebreaker, in 1962, she was reclassified as an Oceanographic Research Ship, and became the world's first dedicated Antarctic research vessel. On the 29th of August 1964, while collecting sample cores and photographing the seabed west of Cape Horn, the Eltanin took the first known photograph of the antenna at a depth of nearly 4000 metres. The first public mention of the unusual object would not surface for several months, a news item which appeared in the New Zealand Herald on 5 December 1964, under the heading "Puzzle Picture From the Sea Bed" would briefly disclose the discover, yet any further exploratory missions, if indeed there has been any, have been operating in secret. Similar to the Baltic sea anomaly, yet positioned at a far deeper depth, in an extremely remote, cold, and lonely part of our world, it too shows all the hallmarks of an artificially created object, the question is, what could it be? And more importantly, whats was, or is, its function? How was it placed where it is? In 1968, author Brad Steiger wrote an article for Saga magazine in which he claimed that the Eltanin had in fact photographed "an astonishing piece of machinery... very much like the cross between a TV antenna and a telemetry antenna". It is interesting to note that the black knight satellite, an anomalous object which is in a polar orbit, has been declared by numerous investigators throughout history, as an artificial “alien satellite”, and with what appears to be an enormous alien antenna resting on the Antarctic sea floor, is it possible that the two are connected? Or possibly, in communication with each other? In 2003 Tom DeMary, a researcher in underwater acoustics, contacted oceanographer A. F. Amos, a member of the Eltaninins crew the 1960s, in an effort to debunk any theory involving artificial design. In turn Amos referred DeMary to the 1971 book “The Face of the Deep” by Bruce C. Heezen and Charles D. Hollister. It seems Hollister had already attempted to identify the mysterious object as a carnivorous sea sponge. However, these attempts to discredit any unusual hypothesis, was solely based on the same photographs we are privileged to, further photographic exploration of the object, if undertaken, has been done in complete isolation from the public. What is the Eltanin antenna? A mere sea sponge? An actual alien antenna? Whatever it is, it seems certain fields of study would like you to believe its natural, regardless of whether confirmation of such claims was made, we always find this highly compelling. Inter-Korean military communication lines at West Sea restored, maintenance check conducted

남북 서해 군통신선 복원... 오늘 오전 8시부터 정상 가동 The two Koreas' military communication lines at the West Sea have been restored and are now fully operational. For a brief maintenance check, the South and North tested the lines for five minutes at 8AM this morning. With that, ALL communication channels between the two Koreas are restored... including the hotline, which was reconnected last week. The main communication channels are the hotline at the truce village of Panmunjeom and the lines at the East and West Sea. The lines at the East Sea were burned in a fire in 2013,... and the hotline and lines at the West Sea were disconnected in February 2016 after South Korea closed down the jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex. DJ Sunara and VJ DECOY inquire upon the defunct General Post Office, Colombo, which was at one point a significant communication centre, as the site of Sri Lanka’s first telegraph and telephone exchange. The laying of the telegraph lines world over led to the SEA-ME-WE optical submarine cable network that connects them on both sides of the Gulf of Mannar. The project will use audio-visual data and devices that represent old and new communication technology in a performative collage. Their collaboration on SEA-ME-WE was initiated by Colomboscope 2016. Submarine Cable Installation: Tools for Power, Telecom, and Seismic Cables (MakaiLay)

05:30
Submarine cable installations in the telecom, power and seismic industries have similarities and differences. But there is a common thread in every submarine cable lay: you need accurate real-time control over the position and bottom tension of your cable as it lands on the seabed. This video discusses a proven method for achieving this control being used by over 75% of the telecom cable ships in the world. A tool called MakaiLay allows operators to precisely control the two most important variables in a cable installation: cable POSITION and TENSION. This software calculates all forces on the cable and can automatically adjust cable payout speed and vessel navigation to keep tension within acceptable limits, safely and accurately installing the cable on the seabed. Over the last 15 years, MakaiLay has become the #1 subsea cable installation package in the world, used by over 3/4 of the world's submarine cable ships to successfully install well over 400,000 kilometers of submarine cable. The benefits of this tool are shared by cable installers, owners, and insurers. Installers, report increased speed, quality, and profitability of cable lays, with decreased cable repairs and potential lawsuits. Owners and insurers who require MakaiLay to be used during installation have the confidence that their cable asset will have the longest possible useful life because it was installed with the world's most trusted and thoroughly validated submarine cable installation tool. This 3D animation and narration was created by Trinity Animation. Visit us at www.makai.com to learn how Makai's tools can help with your power, telecom, or seismic submarine cable project, or contact me directly at: [email protected]

Two Koreas discuss restoring military communication lines

01:52
남북군사실무접촉 오늘 개최...軍통신선 복구논의 South and North Korea are holding working-level military talks for restoring their communication lines. For more, let's connect to our Park Hee-jun. Hee-jun, tell us more about today's talks... Semin. The inter-Korean military talks are presumably beginning as we speak,... as they were scheduled to start at 10AM, Korea time -- a matter of minutes ago. The talks are being held at the CIQ, or the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Office located in Paju, Gyeonggi-do Province,... just south of the inter-Korean border. The South Korean delegation is being led by Army Colonel Cho Yong-geun,... and the North Korean delegation by Colonel Om Chang-nam. They're a follow-up to last week's general-level negotiations. The two sides will mainly discuss fully reconnecting their military communications channels in the East Sea and West Sea districts. They serve to prevent possible provocations and conflict between the two Koreas. That's all I have for now-- I'll keep you updated throughout the day. Semin. Two Koreas discuss restoring military communication lines

01:49
남북군사실무접촉, 軍통신선 복구 논의 오전에 종료 Our top story this afternoon. South and North Korea today held military talks at the working level... about restoring their lines of communication. We're still waiting to hear the results of those talks, but our Park Hee-jun is on the line with the latest. Hee-jun, what can you tell us about today's meeting? Devin. The inter-Korean military talks began this morning at around 10AM, Korea time,.. and ended rather quickly in about an hour. They were held at the CIQ, or the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Office located in Paju, Gyeonggi-do Province,... just south of the inter-Korean border. Each delegation had five members-- the South Korean delegation led by Army Colonel Cho Yong-geun,... and the North Korean delegation by Colonel Om Chang-nam. As you said, we're still waiting to hear the results of the discussion,... which should be revealed anytime now. But the two sides are known to have discussed fully reconnecting their military communications channels in the East Sea and West Sea districts. The West Sea channel was severed in 2016 after the shutdown of the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex. It was restored in January for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics,... but it's only capable of phone communication -- that is, verbal messages only. As for the East Sea communication lines,... they were suspended in 2011 amid military tensions -- and later destroyed in a wildfire. The two sides are also likely to have talked about reactivating a naval communication line, that hasn't been used for a decade. These lines, once restored,... will help the two Koreas avoid possible military conflict, caused by misunderstandings. I'll make sure to bring you the details of the talks later. Inter-Korean military communication back on with communication lines restored

판문점에 이어 서해 통신선까지 복원... 군사회담은 어떻게 진행되나 The two Koreas restored both communication lines at the border village of Panmunjom and at the West Sea area. The big question now: when and how Seoul and Pyongyang will hold their first military talks in three years. Communication channels between the two Koreas are being restored... as the apparent thaw in relations continues. The two Koreas' western military communication line is now back open,... complementing the inter-Korean hotline at the truce village of Panmunjom restored just last week. The western line became fully operational Wednesday morning, after Seoul and Pyongyang conducted a brief maintenance check. It was almost two years that Pyongyang disconnected them in February 2016... in protest against Seoul's shutdown of the jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex. The fact that Pyongyang has restored this line means it's willing to keep its relations with Seoul." This line will also become the main channel through which the military authorities of Seoul and Pyongyang fine-tune the specifics of the military talks they agreed to on Tuesday. Neither the schedule nor the agenda of the talks is yet known,... but South Korea's defense ministry says... the top priority is the successful and peaceful hosting of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Then,... the two sides may be able to touch upon other security issues... which might even strech to cover Seoul's anti-Pyongyang loudspeaker broadcasts at the border. (Korean) "The talks are likely to be on a working level... where Seoul and Pyongyang discuss the method, and safety measures to be used, for the North Korean athletes and delegation to walk to the South through the demilitarized zone." Experts think Pyongyang could eventually demand that Seoul suspend its joint military drills with Washington and scrap the deployment of U.S. strategic assets... but not immediately. Regional cooperation for a safer Indian Ocean

03:49
Video introducing the Mombasa protocol, discussed and agreed in Mombasa that will be signed on 2nd July 2015 in Brussels, with the support of the European Union. World trade is strongly dependant on the maritime routes. The most important Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) span the Western Indian Ocean where fishing activities as well as research and offshore operations are developing. Maritime security issues encompass all legal or illegal activities in these domains that transcend traditional borders, requiring greater interagency and regional cooperation. The Djibouti Code of Conduct was signed in Djibouti in 2009, creating the first regional agreement promoting such cooperation at sea. Through the Code of Conduct, several initiatives have been taken since 2009, together with international organisations, littoral States and User States, for a safer and cleaner Indian Ocean. As the most important area to initiate cooperation was the information sharing and training, the first projects focused on capacity building succeeding in supporting, inter alia, the creation of a regional network of Information Sharing Centres (ISCs), namely the Regional Maritime ISC (ReMISC) Sana’a (Yemen), ISC Mombasa (Kenya), ISC Dar Es Salam (Tanzania), and the Djibouti Regional Training Centre (DRTC). The ISCs contribute to exchange maritime information, the first essential element necessary before establishment of Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) can be attained. The DRTC is a key centre to support institutions and practitioners of the regional maritime community by improving skills, knowledge and confidence. EU Marsic, part of the Critical Maritime Routes programme, was the pioneering approach, that fully strengthened this “regional by regional” networking spirit, fostering coordination in the domain of maritime information and training. Respective governments hosting these four centres provide a strong support, demonstrating evidence of their willingness to maximise the opportunity afforded by the DCoC agreement. After more than 3 years of successful delivery of essential services and training in support of the regional initiative, it is time for these centres to establish a permanent structure supported by a clear commitment of the affiliated countries to ensure mid and long-term sustainability. Resulting of an initiative taken by the four countries hosting the Centres, the Mombasa Protocol defines the rules of governance between its first founders and invites other signatory countries to renew their engagement in the DCoC by joining the process when they are ready to do so. It also foresees the framework of financial contribution, within the Public and Private Partnership (PPP), to consolidate capacities of these centres to respond to the emerging challenges in the maritime security domain.

Seoul's Ministry of National Defense says it will take the necessary measures by cooperating with the relevant departments,... to follow through with the agreement as soon as possible. Naval Convoy, Amsterdam

02:06
International Naval convoy, consisting of four ships, underway on the North Sea Canal, between Vlothaven and the sealocks of Ymuiden. German Navy, Deutsche Marine M1065, Dillingen FGS A516, Donau Royal Navy M110, HMS Ramsey Belgische Zeemacht M921, Lobelia DEUTSCHE MARINE The German Navy is part of the unified Bundeswehr, the German Armed Forces. The German Navy was originally known as the Bundesmarine from 1956 until 1995 when Deutsche Marine (German Navy) became the official name with respect to the 1990 incorporation of the East German Volksmarine. It is deeply integrated into the NATO alliance. Its primary mission is protection of Germany's territorial waters and maritime infrastructure as well as sea lines of communication. Apart from this, the German Navy participates in peacekeeping operations, and renders humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Since 1995 the name German Navy is used in international context, while the official name since 1956 remains Marine without any additions. As of 31 December 2015, the strength of the navy is 16,045 men and women. German warships permanently participate in all four NATO Maritime Groups. ROYAL NAVY The Royal Navy is the principal naval warfare service branch of the British Armed Forces. As of 1 August 2015, there are 76 commissioned ships in the Royal Navy. 19 of the commissioned vessels are major surface combatants (six guided missile destroyers and 13 frigates) and 10 are nuclear-powered submarines (four ballistic missile submarines and six fleet submarines). In addition the Navy possesses a landing platform helicopter, two amphibious transport docks, 15 mine countermeasures vessels, 22 patrol vessels, four survey vessels, one icebreaker and two historic warships (Victory and Bristol). The Royal Navy currently operates three bases where commissioned ships are based; HMNB Portsmouth, HMNB Devonport and HMNB Clyde. In addition, a number of commissioned vessels belonging to the University Royal Naval Units (URNU) are stationed at various locations around the United Kingdom. The total displacement of the Royal Navy is approximately 337,000 tonnes (641,000 tonnes including the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Royal Marines). BELGISCHE ZEEMACHT The Naval Component (Dutch: Marinecomponent, French: Composante marine, German: Marinekomponente) of the Belgian Armed Forces, formerly the Belgian Naval Force, is the naval service of Belgium. The Belgian Navy was created as the Marine Royale (English: Royal Navy) in 1831. This force has operated in various forms throughout Belgian history. When after the Belgian Revolution, the country became independent in 1830, a Dutch squadron blocked the Scheldt estuary. To deal with this threat the Belgian Congress ordered two brigantines to be built, which bore the names Congrès and Les Quatre Journées. After the French army, led by Marshal Count Gérard, captured the citadel of Antwerp in 1832, the captured Dutch gun boats were pressed into Belgian service. In 1840 the Belgian government bought the schooner Louise Marie and in 1845 the brig Duc de Brabant. Louise Marie participated in the Rio Nuñez Incident in 1849. In 1862, the Belgian government discarded its navy and pursued a minimalistic naval policy. In times of crisis and war the Belgian Navy will manage, with the support of its allies, the crises rising from the infringements to the principles of International law and/or from the Humans right and exercise the Belgian sovereignty in the maritime zones where the Navy is qualified, defend the lines maritime of communication, main roads and allied, and protect the ports against any air, surface or underwater attack. MUSIC Dutch Navy March, ''Adelborsten'' Mijnenjagers

Visit our site for defence news http://www.defencereviews.com/ This video shows you that ‘Trilateral exercise will bolster patrolling in Malacca Straits’. Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s keynote address at the 2018 Shangri-La Dialogue, wherein he had articulated India’s vision for the Indo-Pacific region, we strongly support India’s deep engagement with the ASEAN member-States’ participation in patrols along the Straits of Malacca with Singapore, and look forward to the inaugural conduct of the trilateral maritime exercise with Thailand in the Andaman Sea, said Ng Eng Hen, Defence Minister of Republic of Singapore, here on Tuesday. He was addressing a joint press conference with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the ENC headquarters, held as part of the ongoing 25th Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) and the third Defence Ministers’ dialogue between the two countries. A trilateral exercise would bolster the presence of the three nations in the Malacca Straits, and efforts were on to design the exercise modalities, he said. Ms. Sitharaman said the bilateral agreement for the conduct of the joint Army training and exercises in India had been renewed and the framework was being worked out to allow the Singapore Army to use the firing ranges in India to test their special weapons. Both the Ministers agreed on the importance of sea lines communication and maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight, consistent with the international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Ministers also agreed on the importance of international cooperation in tackling transnational security threats and, in particular, measures to collectively tackle the threat of terrorism. Two Koreas completely restore military communication lines on both eastern and western..

01:49
동해안 군통신선도 완전 복구 Back in April, during their historic summit, the two Koreas agreed to stop all hostile acts against each other, and reduce military tensions. Now, they've moved another step closer to that goal. Military communication lines in the east have been fully reconnected. Park Ji-won has the latest. South Korea's defense ministry announced that inter-Korean military communication lines for the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula were completely restored as of Wednesday. All functions of the line, such as phone call and fax functions, are now working as normal. The restoration of the eastern military line comes 8 years after it was severed due to wild forest fire in November 2010. The restoration also came, about a month after the military communication lines for the western part of the peninsula were restored in mid-July. South Korea's defense ministry said, with the complete restoration on both sides of the peninsula, South and North Korea's militaries have now secured stable communication channels,... and this will substantially contribute to easing military tensions and building trust between the two. The ministry also said the newly-restored lines can support the two rounds of reunions of separated families, which will be held throughout next week. The defense ministry also expects the lines will serve a role in facilitating inter-Korean cooperation projects, such as the projects to modernize railroads and highways. The complete restoration of the military communication lines had been agreed during April's historic inter-Korean summit and at the following talks between generals of the two Koreas. US Navy Affirms Commitment to Asia-Pacific Security

02:37
The commander of the U.S. Pacific Command was in the Philippines today. Topping Admiral Robert Willard's agenda, meeting his Philippine counterpart... holding talks over China's growing presence in the South China Sea. The commander of the U.S. Pacific Command met with his Philippine counterpart in Manila to discuss defense cooperation between the longtime allies. Admiral Robert Willard told reporters that China's assertiveness in the South China Sea was discussed. China has been heavily investing in modernizing its military, and turning its navy into a blue water fleet that can project power far from its shores, with nuclear submarines, and maybe one day, aircraft carriers. [Adm. Robert Willard, U.S. Navy]: "In the past 10 years in particular, their military growth, their investment in power projection capabilities, and in area denial capabilities have become concerning not just to the United States, but to the regional countries that are enveloped by all of those same military capabilities. So this is something that we believe should be discussed by counterpart militaries in the region." Admiral Willard says the U.S. Navy continues to monitor movements and provide military assistance in the South China Sea, a vital artery for trade with some of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The sea holds valuable fishing grounds and largely untapped oil and natural gas fields. Willard went on to say that intelligence sharing is key to maintaining security on the high seas. [Adm. Robert Willard, U.S. Navy]: "The overall security, the maritime security and security of the air space in these international waters - vitally important. So the role of the United States Navy will be to maintain a continued presence in the region and to continue to work together very closely with our partners in the region to ensure that the sea lines and air lines of communication remain safe." The U.S. for its part has moved advanced attack submarines and warships to bases in Japan and Guam. It has shown no sign of giving up surveillance missions in what it considers international waters. Experts say the shadowing and jostling between the two sides could flare into a crisis... drawing in other governments around the region and rattling investors who fear discord between Beijing and Washington. Ocean Submarine Communication Cables

05:03
Ocean Submarine Communication CablesHaving discovered the telegraph people started covering vast areas with telegraph lines. Initially the lines connected big cities and countries. Soon communication was established between all major areas within the continents. The same was with telephone communication. But what about communication between the continents? At that time it was possible only by post. Such communication was limited in speed and was conditioned by velocity of vessels sailing, for example, between North America and Europe. And air communication had not been established yet. Long-wave communication was not reliable. There was only one way out - to lay the cable across the ocean bed despite all difficulties and expenses. The first successful experience was laying of a 45-km long cable across Pas de Calais strait in 1850. Its design was later used while making many other submarine cables. So what are these cables? This is a coaxial cable with a continuous insulation, usually made of polyethylene. There are two types of submarine cables - shallow-water cables (up to 700 m) and deep-water cables. They have almost the same design. There are inner and outer copper conductors. The outer conductor has a diameter from several millimeters to several dozen millimeters. The diameter also depends on the number of communication channels. So what are their main differences? A deep-water cable has a steel-wire guiding cable messenger in the middle. This facilitates the cable's laying and prevents twisting. A shallow-water cable does not have such core. It has the inner conductor in the middle. Just like in the first case, it is insulated from the outer conductor by a polyethylene layer. The most important thing is that such cable is additionally protected by a steel-wire armor. You may ask why a shallow-water cable has such armor. Well, it protects the cable against possible physical effects of ship navigation such as contacts with trawls and anchors as well as against rubbing against the ground.Such cable may have a diameter of up to 48 mm and can weigh about 3 tons per kilometer. A deep-water cable is about 1.5 times thinner and lighter. The first transatlantic cable was laid at the third attempt between Ireland and Canadian Newfoundland. This happened in 1858. It was 3750 km long. The first telegraph messages were transmitted but the communication did not last long. Very soon the cable communication failed because of insulation fault. About 400 messages had been transmitted before the failure. The second cable was laid in 1865. But there was cable breakdown and the work came to nothing. But eventually the following year everything went fine and communication was established. Later the second previously broken cable was found and laid to Canada too. By the end of the 19th century already 15 cable junctions were laid. The first telephone cable ТАТ1 was laid in 1956. It had 36 communication channels. Later the number of connections and channels grew. For example, by the 90s ТАТ7 line was laid across the Atlantic. It provided a 40 000 channel communication. In the middle of the 20th century the cables were laid across the Pacific Ocean - between Australia and America. It is about 15 000 km long. There is also a worldwide cable route which is 50 000 km long. The cables are laid across the ocean bed at the depths of up to 7.5 km. Amplifiers may be installed along the line.Special cable layer vessels are used for laying the cable. These are quite big ships. The laying goes at the speed of 15 km/h. The continents can be connected in about 2 weeks' time.Nowadays, for transmitting data, telegraph and telephone lines are replaced by fiber-optic lines. They are also used for data exchange in the Internet. In general, such cable has a similar design. However, it has optical fiber inside instead of a copper conductor. For example, recently the Unity optical cable has been laid under the aegis of Google between Japan and the U.S. It is 10 000 km long. Its overall transmission capacity is 4.8 terabits per second. This type of communication will stay for a long time as so far despite the satellite communication only optical fiber can satisfy data communication demand.

F-35Bs and More: Why U.S. Amphibious Forces Must Dominate the 21st Century

07:30
This video shows you that F-35Bs and More: Why U.S. Amphibious Forces Must Dominate the 21st Century. Support Us: Power Bank: https://amzn.to/2M1HHqi Sony Headphone: https://amzn.to/2Qa0KlC Redmi 5: https://amzn.to/2wHzXUw This week, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps demonstrated yet again why amphibious forces will play a vital role in protecting America’s global interests. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), deployed aboard the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), began operations in and around the Horn of Africa. For the first time, the Marine aviation unit deployed on the Essex amphibious assault ship are operating the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variant of the Joint Strike Fighter. The F-35B’s sensors and targeting systems will provide the MEU/ARG with the means to transform operations on land and at sea. The significance of this event cannot be overestimated. According to Captain Gerald Olin, commodore of the Essex ARG, “It’s really a game-changer for us, and we are really excited to be a part of bringing this new tool to the ARG and learning how to use it. I don’t think we really know exactly… we’re kind of at the leading edge of discovering that.” The F-35B is just one of a growing number of advanced capabilities the MEU/ARG either is beginning to deploy or will soon possess. The stealthy F-35B, able to operate from large deck amphibious warfare ships and small airfields, provides a particularly useful capability for attacking defended targets and providing targeting information for other platforms and weapons systems. Improved ship-to-shore connectors, including the MV-22 Osprey and the CH-53E heavy-lift helicopter and air cushion-landing craft, will enable Marine Corps units to project power on to land further and faster. In addition, the introduction of the new Amphibious Combat Vehicle, built by BAE Systems, will enhance the effectiveness, speed, and agility of MEU operations ashore. The ability of the U.S. sea services to deploy more capable amphibious warfare forces is taking place at a time when the threats to vital sea lines of communication (SLOC) are growing both in number and sophistication. Much of U.S. government concerns and public discussions of the threat have focused on events in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China’s illegal occupation of islands and shoals in the South China Sea and their conversion into military bastions. However, over the past year, it has become increasingly evident that the threats to critical Middle East SLOCS also are increasing. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz that is the access route to the Persian Gulf. Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have conducted a number of attacks with anti-ship cruise missiles on Saudi ships. Earlier this year, the militants fired missiles at two Saudi tankers west of the port of Hodeida. In response, Saudi Arabia halted all oil shipments through the Bab el Mandeb that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Biggest Nazca Lines Ever Appear In Australia?

03:02
Sign up to our online magazine for even more mysteries: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory You Can Also Follow Us On Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/MysteryHistoryBook https://twitter.com/Mysterytweetery Hey guys, so, I’m sure you’re aware of the Nazca lines of Peru, the enormous drawings found upon the land, created using a vast array of subjects. What is especially interesting regarding these ancient lines, found all over the world, is that to truly appreciate the images you would have to view them from space. Some of the drawings are even waving, leading many to wonder over the years regarding their original purpose… The largest lines can be found in Bolivia. Known as the Sajama lines they were clearly constructed by an intelligent force, many theories regarding the original function of the lines have been put forward over the years, though to this day, the actual purpose remains a mystery. Covering an area of approximately 22 thousand, 525 square kilometres, they are truly massive. Each individual line is around 3 meters wide, with the longest measuring over 20 kilometres in length. However, amazingly, the largest known drawing of one subject is actually a modern creation, and it is a drawing of a man. Called the “Marree Man,” or “Stuart's Giant,” it was discovered by Trec Smith on the 26th of June 1998, a charter pilot flying between Marree and Coober Pedy, in the vast remote bushlands of Southern Australia. Created deep in the outback, far away from civilization, the creators of this gigantic drawing remain a complete mystery, 4.2 km tall and with a perimeter of over 28 kilometres, due to the massive undertaking these lines would have been, the huge resources they demand on land and in the air, the fact that no one saw it being created, or additionally reported it… Its creation will remain extremely perplexing… To create such an image, a fleet of vehicles would have been required… A system of radio communication, and a team of individuals to create it. All this completed within a dry, remote, unforgiving corner of the Australian outback, without telling anyone that it’s there? The Marree Man depicts an indigenous, Australian man, hunting with a boomerang or stick. It lies on a plateau at Finnis Springs 60 km west of the township of Marree in central South Australia. Was the Maree man made by extra-terrestrial visitors to our planet, as a form of orbital indication to what inhabits the planet? Although the mystery of the marree man may be a new one, it’s just as confusing as ancient lines. Thanks for watching guys, and until next time, take care. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marree_Man http://struik.bookslive.co.za/blog/2015/06/01/a-first-for-south-africa-discover-more-about-the-karoos-snake-eagle-geoglyph/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3257165/Marree-Man-sketching-South-Australian-outback-missing-Google-Earth.html

NATO defense ministers have approved plans to form two new alliance commands, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at NATO HQ in Brussels. The secretary general spoke at a news conference at the end of the first day of the NATO defense ministerial. The ministers approved plans to modernize the NATO command structure. The alliance command structure allows the 29 member nations to operate in sync and perform missions and operations as an alliance. “At the end of the Cold War, NATO had 22,000 staff working in 33 commands,” Stoltenberg said. “Today, the command structure is reduced to fewer than 7,000 staff in seven commands.” The threat emanating from Russia, out-of-area operations and concerns about the alliance’s southern flank mean NATO must respond, the secretary general said. The changes will place greater focus on maritime security; logistics and military mobility; and cyber defense. New Commands “We will establish a new joint force command for the Atlantic, to help protect sea lines of communication between North America and Europe,” Stoltenberg said. “We will establish a new support command for logistics, reinforcement and military mobility -- improving the movement of troops and equipment is essential to our collective deterrence and defense.” 09:55 The U.S. has volunteered to house the joint force command and Germany has offered to host the logistics command. NATO will designate some additional land component commands in Europe. “We will also set up a new cyber operations center at our military headquarters … to further strengthen our defenses,” the secretary general said. The next move is for defense ministers to decide on the timelines, locations and staffing for the headquarters. Stoltenberg expects those decisions in June. Defense ministers also discussed burden-sharing. “We all agreed that we have made great progress but there is still much work to be done,” he said. At the Wales Summit in 2014, the allies agreed to spend 2 percent of gross domestic product on defense. “In other words: more cash, capabilities and contributions,” he said. After years of decline, the alliance has seen three years of increased defense spending across Europe and Canada. This amounts to an additional $46 billion. “In 2014, only three allies spent 2 percent of GDP or more on defense,” Stoltenberg said. “This year, we expect eight allies to meet or exceed the target. And by 2024, we expect at least 15 allies will spend 2 percent of GDP or more on defense.”
