Container Terminal Automation - Uno Bryfors - ABB
Uno Bryfors of ABB speaks about how automation helps container terminals to meet the challenges implicit with handling larger ships and bigger container volumes. In a changing port and terminals climate, Mr Bryfors describes how operators can countenance contemporary challenges. Video Transcript: We are supplying electrical equipment and automation to the crane industry and to terminals all over the world. 2008/2009 was really a lesson to the whole industry. We saw the end of the big volume increase in the container handling and we went from 10-12% growth down to 4-5% growth today, which is really quite good. It happened through a real slump in the business but also a rather quick recovery. Now what we see today is we have gone from real volume growth to building efficiency and productivity into the industry. The challenges facing the terminals due to the mega-ships coming into operation now is the volume; as such we need much higher productivity on the berth to service these and at least 500 TEU to be moved per hour, maybe 800-900 even, but this is manageable. The next challenge is to have the stacking capacity for all of these containers when we have really big calls, maybe as much as 10,000-20,000 TEU in one call has to be handled. Another, and maybe the biggest challenge is that the number of ships is coming down. Automation is the basis for increasing the efficiency of the terminals. Automation is automatic hand-offs, automatic cranes, automatic vehicles and also automatic hand-offs between all these means of handling the container, but with that comes automatic hand-off of correct information between all these equipments, all the way from the ship to the gate and rail, and the way back again to the ship. But also what we see with this, the next step, we now achieve is when we have the automated equipment remotely controlled equipment, we have remotely controlled desks for being able to handle all types of cranes; we can run ship-to-shore cranes, stacking cranes, rail cranes, really all kinds of cranes with ease but also bringing in all exception handling in the terminal and also bringing in the logistics and the maintenance, bringing all of this to a central control room, today container terminals have to optimise their operations thats the only way to increase the cost and stay competitive. The competitive environment is going to get much tougher due to the bigger ships and so on. Either you get a call or you don't get it and the impact is very very big, and with this we can also at the same time, when we are optimising we can reduce the impact to the environment, we are much more energy efficient in an operation that is smooth and continuous. We are also making the terminals safer with automation and optimisation, we bring people in and we don't expose them to hazardous environments out in the terminal, and this all in all makes a much more efficient operation. With automation and centralisation of staff in the terminal, we are also greatly improving the working environment for the staff. It's a huge difference sitting on a crane looking down 50 metres and doing it for hours or being in a working environment like the one behind me in a desk that you can adjust, you can sit and stand and you can at any time change your duties with one of your colleagues and you can work in a real team. Now we are working to make the terminals safer, greener, and more productive and this is for small and big terminals. The automation that we are having today is first coming into the big terminals when we also see it spreading over the world to much smaller terminals and today even the medium-sized and small terminals are facing the challenge of much bigger ships and the need to improve and they are getting much more cost-efficient.

Lost at sea: Ecological assessment around a sunken shipping container
Thousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. Many of these containers eventually sink to the deep seafloor. In 2004, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the Sanctuary recently described how deep-sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas. The red dots seen in some of the underwater footage are lasers mounted on the remotely operated submersible. The lasers are 29 cm apart and allow the scientists to estimate animal size. CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt / ex-Largest Container Ship / Port of Hamburg 2013, 28th May
First Voyage from the CMA CGM "Alexander Von Humboldt" to Port of Hamburg. This HD-Video shows the CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt incoming to Port of Hamburg on 2013, May 28th. The CMA CGM "Alexander Von Humboldt" is the second one of a series of three 16.000 TEU vessels. The Container Vessel CMA CGM "Marco Polo" is the sister ship. At this time is it currently one of two of the largest Container Vessels in the world. The CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt is christened at 30th May 2013 in Hamburg. At 18 kn ship speed, the stopping distance is more than 1.6 sm! Without consideration of the propeller, the stopping distance and stop times are essentially a function of the ship's mass, ship's resistance and the initial speed, as well as the influence of the environmental conditions. The stop-path calculation of ships with great accuracy is not a simple procedure. In general, ships with variable pitch propellers have shorter stop values than ships with fixed propellers. Flag: UNITED KINGDOM [ UK ] Port of registry: LONDON IMO: 9454448 L.O.A. : 396 meter Beam : 53,6 meter Nominal TEU: 16.020 Remarks: The largest Container Ship is current the first ship of "Triple-E class", named MAERSK MC-KINNEY MOLLER (399 m), at July 15th, 2013 on service. IMO 9619907 The largest ship what ever built, was the Super Tanker Knock Nevis (458 m). She was scrapped in 2010.

Container Seizure - Antwerp
More than 420 million containers move around the globe by sea every year, transporting 90 per cent of the world's cargo. Most carry licit goods, but some are being used to smuggle drugs, weapons, even people. To improve container security, in 2003 UNODC teamed up with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to launch the Container Control Programme.

10 Biggest,Busiest and Largest Ports in Africa 2017
Africa's Busiest and Largest Ports ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe to our YouTube channel : https://goo.gl/oHL7nB ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With over 90% of Africa’s imports and exports conducted by sea, there is an increasing need for innovation and development in the field of maritime. Africa covers about 6% of the earth’s total surface. With 38 of its 54 states either coastal or insular in nature, Africa has over a hundred port facilities, a few of which handle 6% of the worldwide water-borne cargo traffic and about 3% of the world’s container traffic. With over 90% of Africa’s imports and exports conducted by sea, research conducted by Jovago.com reveals the 7 harbours/ports that stand out strategically across the region. Durban, South Africa Port of Durban as popularly known is Africa’s most active general cargo port. It is situated a block away from Durban’s central business district and plays a key role in S.A’s economy. Being Africa’s largest container port, it handles most of the seagoing traffic in comparison to the other ports in South Africa. This port welcomes about 4,500 vessels yearly and about 8,3000 containers per month, it conducts trade worth over $45billion.According to the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa, it handled about 44.8 million tonnes of cargo of cargo in 2013-2014. Mombasa, Kenya Port Mombasa, often referred to as “the city of merchants” dates back to the times of Portuguese exploration, it has been and remains a busy trading post for the region which could be attributed to its strategic location between South Africa and the Gulf of Aden. It is a key gateway to East and Central Africa. It provides a direct link to about 80 ports worldwide and a railway line runs therefrom to Uganda and Tanzania. With 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (teu) and a container capacity of about 250,000 teu per year, Mombasa Port now handles about double this volume. The teu is an inexact unit of cargo capacity used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals. It is based on the volume of a 20-foot-long (6.1 m) intermodal container. Djibouti Djibouti’s ports are crucial to its geo-strategic importance both in military and economic terms. They serve as a passage for Ethiopian trade and a platform for the transshipment of goods. This involves the outflow of container and bulk cargo from larger vessels to be redistributed to East Africa and Arabian ports. It provides a secure regional hub for transshipment and relay of goods. China is also directly involved in the Port of Djibouti through the state-owned China Merchants Group. Their interest in Djibouti goes beyond the benefits of being involved in East African regional trade rather Djibouti’s position as the only reliable port along the main shipping lanes between Europe and the Gulf and also between Asia and the eastern coast of Africa is essential. Lagos, Nigeria Being Nigeria’s economic focal point, Lagos generates a significant portion of the country’s GDP. Abidjan, Ivory Coast The port of Abidjan is located on a lagoon and is connected to the sea by a 2.8 long km channel. The Abidjan Container Terminal is run jointly by the French Bolloré Africa Logistics and APM Terminals. Suez Canal, Egypt The Suez Canal is 101 miles (163 km) long connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez, a northern branch of the Red. The Suez Canal Axis Development Project aimed at its expansion and development is currently in planning. The 2014 canal revenue was approximately $5.45 billion which was 6.8 % higher than the previous year. The 2014 total tonnage was up to 962.7 million tonnes. Tangier, Morocco Separated from The Port of Tangier which remains the port for ferries, the Tangier-Med Port, accommodates commercial ships and vessels and can facilitate up to 3.5 million containers. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Our Social Media: ► Facebook: https://goo.gl/e6VnIE ► Twitter: https://goo.gl/7tT156 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► For more videos and articles visit: ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Music Used in This Video: ►https://goo.gl/TIXONx ►https://goo.gl/tQ2HCf ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► For copyright matters relating to our channel please contact us directly at :https://goo.gl/wRjjJU ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Thanking all of the visitors for the likes, comments and shares for this video .
