This Prehistoric Sea Monster Makes The Whale Shark Look Tiny
This prehistoric sea monster makes the Whale shark look tiny. We take a look at this giant sea monster that makes the Whale shark look tiny. Basilosaurus is known as the king lizard. This giant prehistoric whale had a sleek eel like body, which is unusual for a whale. This giant measured up to 65 feet long from the tip of its head to the end of its tail fin but only weighing in the neighbourhood of five to 10 tons. At 65 feet the middle Eocene Basilosaurus was certainly one of the biggest prehistoric whales that ever lived. Thank you for watching! Thank you to CO.AG for the background music!

Whale Sharks of Holbox | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD
Jonathan travels to Holbox, Mexico in search of the massive whale shark—the world's largest fish. Reaching 50 feet long, these animals grow larger than a school bus, but they are completely harmless since they eat only plankton and small fish. Jonathan gets up close and personal to a mouth the size of a small car in his investigation to discover why so many whale sharks visit Holbox every summer. This is an HD upload of a previously posted Season 2 segment. ********************************************************************** If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTV Twitter https://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TV Instagram @blueworldtv Web: http://www.blueworldTV.com ********************************************************************** Holbox is not your typical tourist destination. Until recently, this sleepy island wasn’t much more than a fishing village. There are no paved roads, and everyone gets around in golf carts or other non-conventional transportation. There are almost no cars on the island. The highway here is a stretch of beach where you can hit maybe 20 MPH if you have a fast cart. Downtown, this island has the charm of a place not yet discovered by throngs of tourists. But everywhere there are signs. Something special has been discovered here. Offshore in the cool waters of the Gulf of Mexico, a giant lurks! To find the whale sharks, I get up early to meet the boats to take me and the other intrepid snorkelers on the adventure of a lifetime. These are converted fishing boats. Instead of depleting the ocean of fish, these fishermen are instead making their living taking tourists to swim with the fish. A really big fish. Using a GPS device to help him find the shark hot spot, the captain takes us about an hour offshore. Our guide Andreas stands in the bow, with a carefully trained eye on the horizon. Soon, we pass a pod of dolphins. We also see manta rays, and large schools of fish feeding in a frenzy. Soon, he spots what we are looking for—the large fin of a whale shark sticking up out of the water. As we pull the boat up alongside the shark, I can see its massive mouth open and funneling water in, like a gigantic storm drain. The shark is feeding. But what could it be eating? It’s more than 30 feet long. What could feed such an enormous animal? To find out, I don my snorkel gear and hop over the side. The whale shark passes right in front of me. The water is not very clear, and this is where I get my first clue what is going on here. The sharks have come to this section of the ocean because it is filled with plankton! Whale sharks might be the biggest fish in the sea, but they eat only plankton and small fish. The word plankton comes from a Greek word meaning drifter, so plankton are drifting organisms. Early in the morning, when the water is calm, the plankton forms a thick layer near the surface. He's just surface feeding. What the whale sharks do here is they swim across the surface of the water with their mouths open wide and all that plankton that's sitting right there at the surface gets funneled right into their mouths. The enormous mouth swallows up huge quantities of water. The water comes back out through the shark’s gills, but comb-like structures in the gills capture the plankton like an enormous spaghetti strainer. So the whale shark swimming through the water is like a big pool skimmer, filtering the plankton for breakfast. Each shark eats hundreds of pounds of food every hour! It turns out that eating plankton is very efficient for a large animal. Conditions here around Holbox Island are perfect for plankton in the summer. The water is not as clear as other islands in the area, but these conditions attract a vast number of whale sharks, manta rays and fish—all animals that eat plankton. The fish attract other predators like dolphins, birds and bigger fish. That’s why Holbox has always been a great fishing area for the locals. I can’t believe how many sharks are around the boat. I can count as many as ten at a time. I have been to a lot of places around the world to swim with whale sharks, but never anyplace with this many! Soon however, as the sun gets higher in the sky and the air gets warmer, wind picks up and waves start to form. The plankton layer dissipates, and the sharks dive down deep, out of sight.

Fisherman Catch Baby Whale Shark
Fisherman catch baby whale shark. Divers on lunch break hear local fisherman yelling loudly during a large and unexpected catch. Locals and divers ran to see as the fisheman proudly dragged their catch to shore. Upon realizing it was a 4 meter baby whale shark, a diver from Moscow offered to pay the fisherman to release the shark unharmed. The deal was struck and both parties worked together to help the shark along it's way. It was happily not seen again. Despite their name, they are sharks, not whales, one of only three shark species in the world to eat by filter feeding. Once a rare sight, whale sharks are now easier to find and swim with or observe in an aquarium. Despite increased visibility, whale shark populations are shrinking, and scientists are in a race against time to study the whale sharks fast enough to save them. Whale shark sucks fish out of hole in fishing net - Conservation International (CI)
On a recent expedition to Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, Conservation International's Mark Erdmann learned how whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. The sharks have also learned how to "suck" the fish out of holes in the nets! This can be dangerous — but the local fishers like the sharks, considering them good luck, and are working to modify the net designs to prevent sharks from entering. With great percision, the divers worked their way around the massive net, slowly loosening the whale sharks free. The first two whale sharks left the net without much trouble; however, the other two creatures, which were more tangled, needed a little extra help from the surrounding divers. Together, the group of divers pulled the net down, while others gave the whale sharks a push to help them on their way. The footage was captured in Cenderawasih Bay, West Papau, Indonesia, by a scuba diving organizer who goes by Txus. **Please contact [email protected] to licence this content** Company Information: Caters Clips is owned and operated by Caters News Agency Ltd, an international multimedia content provider. Before It's Too Late - Whale Shark - Gypsy of the Deep
BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE EPISODE 6 -- WHALE SHARK GYPSY OF THE DEEP looks at the enigmatic whale shark. A favourite with divers the world over, this the biggest shark in the sea has attracted the imagination and attention of people all over the world. Unfortunately this includes commercial fisherman from the Far East. The problem is, little is known of this giant fish, the biggest of all fish. But what is known is that it is one of the world's rarest fish and unless something is done to protect it this fish will go the same way as thousands of other endangered species, it could well become extinct. Gypsy of the Deep looks at what is happening globally to this creature. We travel to the Indian Ocean, to the Seychelles and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, to the Philippines where the whale shark has just be declared a protected species and to Taiwan where the aggressively hunt the whale shark for restaurant and dinner tables. We see the shark market where a huge pregnant whale shark was landed and see the only pictures of more than 300 pups that were inside the whale shark ready to be born. Until now Whale Sharks have only been seen on film as single solitary fish cruising off the coast of Western Australia. In this film we see them congregate. We also see magnificent underwater pictures, music and storytelling tell of the plight of this gentle giant. Above the waves we meet the people who are concerned for the species future, the conservation officers and scientists in the Seychelles, Australia, Japan America and the Philippines who are fighting to save these creatures. Operation Albacore: Whale Shark Release
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean, originating on the planet more than 60 million years ago. As a result of global fishing pressures, both from being deliberately targeted for their meat, fins and oil and their death as bycatch in other fisheries, their survival is threatened. In July 2016 their status on ‘The IUCN Red List of Endangered Species’ was even upgraded from ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’ – meaning that their populations have likely halved in the last 75 years. During the Bob Barker's most recent patrol of Gabon’s Exclusive Economic Zone, as part of Operation Albacore, the crew assisted in the release of one of the lucky ones that managed to get away. In continuing to document by-catch and survey release methods Operation Albacore remains steadfast in its commitment to assist Gabonese authorities in their exploration of measures to mitigate incidental mortality and serious injury, and where possible aid the successful release of critical species. ---- Sea Shepherd is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization that engages in direct action campaigns to defend wildlife, and conserve and protect the world’s oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental destruction. Whale Shark Seeks Help
A whale shark - a true shark that is in no way related to whales - has the distinction of being the largest fish in the ocean. It is a filter feeder and would never swallow a human being. This remarkable story is of a roped whale shark that sought help from three fishermen off the coast of Australia just south of Sydney in March, 2003. The documentary is narrated by Mark Spencer with music and production support by Roger Faynes. You can also hear an interview with Joe (the fisherman helping the shark) on Brisbane's ABC radio (with Warren Boland) at http://blogs.abc.net.au/queensland/2013/02/saving-a-whale-shark.html?site=brisbane&program=612_weekends_with_warren or just search for ABC Radio Brisbane and look at Warren Boland's interview recordings. Mark Spencer has written a book "Ocean of Self" ('Beneath the waves of our individual selves'), which provides a possible explanation for this behaviour. See www.oceanofself.com for general information and go to 'Updates' to secure a hard-cover printed book through the author's crowd-funding campaign.
