2 Light Glamour Lighting Setup - A Studio Lighting Tutorial with Glamour Lighting

04:51
This glamour lighting setup is simple. Two lights and one medium sized softbox. I placed one 320ws strobe on camera left just behind the box and aiming into the corner of the room. This strobe was dialed up almost to full power, and I used a light amber gel to give me just a little color to the light as it lit the wall and the box. This is another one of my keep it simple stupid lighting tutorials. It only requires two lights and a medium sized softbox - and yes - you can do it with speedlights or monolights. This shot was made as part of a glamour session for a new model who came to me to add some flavor to her portfolio. She had already done a few photo sessions and the agencies were telling her that her photos were too much like fashion shots. This model is only 5’4” tall which means she won’t be shooting fashion AND modeling agencies are ok with some swimsuit shots if they are more PG than R rated. So the goal was to create a shot to show that this young lady is in great shape and is very comfortable with herself. As is often the case, new models struggle with hand placement and I know that many of you as photographers have the same struggles when it comes to telling a model what to do with her hands. I can’t teach you that in this video, but I will tell you that I am going to be doing some videos on that topic soon and some of my older videos do touch on that subject. For now, let me just tell you that when in doubt - about what to do with hands - give the model something real to do - hold something - touch something, etc. - while it may not get you a perfect hand - it will get you closer to something that looks natural and is not a distraction in your photo. With that in mind, I wanted to create a setting that would allow me to do something other than have the model put her hands on her hips or play with the outfit she was wearing, and I couldn’t go too dramatic with the pose because remember - the purpose of the shot was to show her figure and personality. I decided to use my all-purpose box that I showed you in this video as a second wall and I placed it along another white wall in my studio, with the model sandwiched between the two. The Basics of Studio Lighting with Elinchrom Part 2

04:23
Using Elinchrom’s fantastic D-lite studio flash system learn the 3 essential 2 light set-ups every studio photographer should learn, Hi-key, Mid-Key and Low-Key. Once mastered, these techniques will allow you to shoot pretty much anything in studio. Mark explains and demonstrates the three key lighting styles that form the basis of most studio photography and how to achieve them using only 2 studio heads. Mark starts with darker or low-key images, using one light as the key light and one as a separation light. He then moves to mid-key, showing how to shoot with just one light as the key, and then with two lights, the second being either for separation or used on the background. Finally, Mark finishes with a simple Hi-key suitable for individuals or pairs, using the key for the subject and the second light set much higher to give the white and bright background. Equipment: Canon 5DMkIII, Canon 24-105mm, 2x Elinchrom D-lite Ones, 2x Elinchrom Portalite Softbox, Elinchrom Skyport Trigger, Elinchrom Translucent Umbrella, Lastolite Trigrip Silver/White to see more films on lighting go to www.thephotographeracademy.com You can one year of our Academy membership for FREE using promo code - VIP2016

Fashion photography - Studio Lighting for Fashion Photographers

01:59
http://blog.perzennstrom.com Fashion Photography Fashion Lighting - the Basics. I’m going to stick my neck out a bit here - Drumroll... Lighting is overrated! This might sound like blasphemy - especially since this article is is supposed to be a basic introduction to fashion photography studio lighting - but bear with me just for a moment. In photography circles we’re inundated with statements and ideas such as “a Photographer is a Painter using only light” or blatantly cheap flattery such as “Your light is beautiful” (If You really want to get on a photographers good side - just tell him/her that his/her light is beautiful. I actually don’t buy any of this and I say it again - I believe lighting is overrated (especially if You come at it from a fashion photography perspective) and in this article I will tell You why. If You’re a fashion photographer I believe speed and flexibility are much more important than lighting. What really matter is not the lighting but what is in front of the camera. Well - after this preamble let me jump straight into the basics of studio lighting because even after having said all that I believe You need to know the basics of lighting. Learn it and then un-learn it. Make lighting become part of Your photographic reflexes. There are only 3 things You need to understand to really get lighting. If You master this you can reverse engineer any images to understand how they were lit. Any changes to these three things will change the character of Your lighting - so pay attention please... Relative Size of Lightsource Ambient light Color of light And even if You do become a master of lighting there is something very important that I’d like to underline - If it looks good - just shoot ! That sounds pretty simple but You wouldn’t imagine how many photographers that drag on the session, endlessly making miniscule adjustments to the lighting that doesn’t actually make a difference and in the process losing what’s in front of the camera - the model. So again… If it looks good - just shoot it ! Relative Size of Lightsource The relative size of the lightsource is the most important aspect of the character of the light - by character I mean the fact that we say “That’s a really hard light” or “That is very soft and flattering light” “The relative size of the light source determines how the edge of the shadow will look.” It is the relative size of the lightsource that will determine this. Look at the edge of the shadow - if the edge is sharp and hard we have what we call a hard light if the edge of the shadow is soft - we have a soft light. It is the relative size of the lightsource that gives us a either hard or soft light. A big lightsource gives a soft light. A small relative light source gives a hard/sharp light. Character of Light - Hard Light A good example to use is the sun on a cloudless day. The size of the sun is enormous but because of the distance the sun appears very small in the sky - ergo a hard light! Character of Light - Soft Light Now think of the same scenario - but this time on an overcast day with clouds filling the entire sky. In this case the relative size of the lightsource is very, very big - the whole overcast sky (which takes up 50% of Your total field of vision). The light on a day like this is very, very soft and the edges of the shadows are super soft - in fact there are no real shadows actually. (An even softer light would be inside a white room with all white walls, ceilings and floor…) Ambient Light Ambient light is any light that You don’t actually control - you can also think of it as “junk light” - the unintended light which is left over or just bouncing around in the studio. Examples of ambient light are reflections off studio walls or floor or ceiling, or stray light creeping out from umbrellas or soft boxes. Ambient light is very important- it fills in the shadows and decreases the contrast of the image - it makes the shadows brighter. Learn to control the ambient light. In a studio situation this is typically done by using black&white polystyrene flats “killing” off reflections from walls and ceilings - usually with the intention to darken and deepen the shadows. “The ambient light determines the “fill” in the shadows… If the ambient light is strong enough = no shadows” Color of light This is easy - no need to really talk about it actually... https://www.facebook.com/PerZennstromPhotography https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/105299232407152293991/105299232407152293991/posts https://plus.google.com/u/0/+PerZennstrom/posts https://twitter.com/perzennstrom http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00MRYX3J2

Sci-Fi Inspired Four Light Fashion Portrait Tutorial - Fashion Photography Lighting Tutorial

09:06
In this sci-fi inspired fashion portrait tutorial I used a four flash lighting setup with Interfit photographic Honey Badgers to create my light. The shots were made with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and the Olympus 45mm f/1.2 PRO lens. The goal was to create a fashion portrait studio lighting tutorial that featured the incredible makeup and beautiful eyes of my model. I used a clamshell lighting setup create soft even studio lighting. In this fashion photography setup - in front of the model, I have one Interfit Honey Badger mounted on a boom arm and modified with the Interfit 24" Pop-up softbox with the baffle and front diffuser in place. My model is seated on a posing stool about 8 feet in front of a white Savage Seamless Paper Background and behind her I have two more Honey Badgers mounted one on either side and above - both with 30degree honeycombs and blue gels in place. You can see barn doors in this shot - they are just part of the light mod that holds my filters and honeycombs - so they are having no impact on the shot. I used honeycombs to narrow the light spread because I have my model placed about 5 feet in front of the gelled lights and I didn't want to risk any light spilling into my lens and creating flair while I was shooting. Last I have the fourth Honey Badger mounted on a Baby Pin floor stand and I have a 7" reflector and a dark blue gel on this strobe that is set about 3 feet in front of the background and aimed up so that the hot spot is directly behind my models head.
