What can the huge changes in the newspaper industry teach us about marketing and branding? ProfileTree had a great opportunity to learn from an industry leader when marketer John Brolly of the highly-successful Irish News took part in a far-reaching video interview. Covering a huge range of subjects including media trends and newspaper subscription models (see full video), John began by introducing the Irish News (a Belfast-based daily): “The Irish News is thankfully the top performing newspaper in the local newspaper market. “We have won numerous awards in terms of our editorial content, we have a very very good Editor and a very very good team of journalists. Thankfully we seem to be satisfying the news need that’s out there. “We’re a go-to product on a daily basis, and long may that continue as it is a challenging market.” John also explained his work with the newspaper: “I’ve been with the Irish News for 17 years and I’ve enjoyed it, which is why I’ve stayed there for so long. Previous to that I was with Diageo where I was Brand Manager for a few years, and I spent some time in the advertising industry. “It is a very tough time but at the end of the day you just have to cater for the challenges that are out there in terms of your content and the product offerings that you are putting out. “For us, print is very much a core part of the business and we hope that is very much so in the future. But we also have an e-paper available on a daily basis from 5am, so if people want to read us electronically on their tablet or their phone they can do that whether they are in Belfast or Dubai or Sydney. “So, we’re basically opening up now to a global audience. We have a website as well, so for some people who might not want to go for the full e-paper product we have different subscription packages.” They key? Understanding that “these days there’s no one fit” for everyone. Also, being sure to excel in a number of areas – such as sport, business and lifestyle – with the right colleagues the key to making this happen. “It is all about the people in any business, we have an excellent team. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined. Today I am going to give an overview of the trends in scholarly publishing. I am going to discuss them only briefly, as each one is worthy of a video by itself. They breakdown into several broad themes: Technology, Community, and Product Evolution. I put Technology at the top of the list as it will continue to create great opportunities in publishing for new products and services. Four main ideas under technology: first there has been a lot of press about VR or virtual reality which will continue to offer major opportunities in publishing. Second, gamification, or the use of gaming techniques in online learning, will inevitably grow and find more appreciative users. Third, publishers will be providing readers and customers with more innovative tools to use with their content and to integrate them into their working lives. And finally, a much great reliance on video/audio/infographics. I know, not a technology but their provided by a technology. The second major theme is Community. First, publishing will continue to help foster a greater reliance on seeking advice from peer networks. Second, and related is the crowd sourcing of content such as with a wiki. Third is self-publishing which has transformed traditional publishing and it will inevitable make its mark on scholarly publishing as well. Fourth, as the world becomes even flatter, international opportunities will continue to flourish. Finally, social media will continue to change the ways readers find out about and experience new content. The third and final theme is Product Evolution. First, the decline of clinical books or monographs is likely to continue and be contrasted with the rise of large database products. Second is the increase of point-of-care or clinical tools. Third, Open Access will continue to affect markets and help increase the availability of Open Science and the access to quality literature worldwide. These three major themes do not even take into account what is happening with data, the proliferation of pirated contact, nor the changes taking place in advertising or sponsorships with private industry. K-HOLE exists in multiple states at once: it is both a publication and a collective; it is both an artistic practice and a consulting firm; it is both critical and unapologetically earnest. Its five members come from backgrounds as varied as brand strategy, fine art, web development, and fashion, and together they have released a series of fascinating PDF publications modeled upon corporate trend forecasting reports. These documents appropriate the visuals of PowerPoint, stock photography, and advertising and exploit the inherent poetry in the purposefully vague aphorisms of corporate brand-speak. Ultimately, K-HOLE aspires to utilize the language of trend forecasting to discuss sociopolitical topics in depth, exploring the capitalist landscape of advertising and marketing in a critical but un-ironic way. In the process, the group frequently coins new terms to articulate their ideas, such as “Youth Mode”: a term used to describe the prevalent attitude of youth culture that has been emancipated from any particular generation; the “Brand Anxiety Matrix”: a tool designed to help readers understand their conflicted relationships with the numerous brands that clutter their mental space on a daily basis; and “Normcore”: a term originally used to describe the desire not to differentiate oneself, which has since been mispopularized (by New York magazine) to describe the more specific act of dressing neutrally to avoid standing out. (In 2014, “Normcore” was named a runner-up by Oxford University Press for “Neologism of the Year.”) Since publishing K-HOLE, the collective has taken on a number of unique projects that reflect the manifold nature of their practice, from a consulting gig with a private equity firm to a collaboration with a fashion label resulting in their own line of deodorant.
