It is a pain to be going through endless magazines and books trying to lose weight. Stop doing that to yourself and take a look at just the right things. Weight gain is perhaps one of those uncommon things that discreetly hide behind one’s mind. If you thought women with size zero were always proud of themselves, it is time you realize you are wrong. Weight gain may sound easy with chocolates, cheese and other fatty food products, but one must realize that these are not healthy sources of weight gain. Here are few weight gain tips for girls. Charter a weight gain plan Similar to charting a plan for weight loss, make a plan for weight gain. Not having a weight gain plan paves way to a non-curvy body. Typically, your weight gain plan will include food products that you consume, how much muscle you want to gain, the kind of exercises you will do to achieve the goal, how much time you will allow to gain weight and the kind of weight gain supplements you will use to aid your diet. Eat frequently. When you are looking forward to gaining weight, you must consume a surplus of calories to fuel the muscles. Consume at least 4-6 smaller meals throughout the day to release nutrients to your muscles. Eat food products that are high in carbohydrates, protein and have moderate amount of fats. Food products that you should consume are brown rice, chicken, pasta, wholegrain, fish, turkey, full cream milk etc. It is eating that is going to trigger weight gain. Include foods that are healthy and have enough carbohydrates and healthy fats to help you in increasing body weight. Rather than restricting yourself to breakfast, lunch and dinner, eat small meals at regular intervals throughout the day to ensure that you don’t feel hungry. Charter a weight gain plan and mention the necessity to eat every 2.5 to 3 hours a day. Consume food like vegetables, fruits, milk, steak and other assorted types of nuts. Eating more, however, does not infer that you should eat whatever you can find within reach. Having healthy snacks in between meals is also a good advice in managing your diet. Choose your exercises wisely. If you thought exercising is mandatory only for those looking forward to losing weight, you were wrong until you read “an important part of a weight gain program is exercising”, however, you must choose the right exercise. Weight gain exercises are mostly those that involve building of muscle mass. Muscle building exercises are called compound exercises that include dips, squats, push-ups, chin ups, deadlifts, barbell squats etc. These enable the release of muscle building hormones such as IGF-1, testosterone and HGH or Human Growth Hormone. Choose weight gain supplements wisely. Supplements are supplementary to your diet. Make sure that you choose them wisely. Also remember to not forget that they are a bonus and not the only source of weight gain. Supplements such as whey protein powder and creatine monohydrate are the most widely used weight gain supplements. Start counting calories. You need to follow a diet chart where at the end of each week, you can check your weight and find out how many pounds you have gained. When you go shopping, choose the food items that are high in calories and low in sugar. Start counting your calories on an everyday basis; this does not mean that you have to change your eating habits. Eat the way you used to and count the number of calories that you have been accumulating throughout the day. This helps one to be as accurate as possible and this is important to manage gain or loss of weight. Do not stay up late at night. Make sure that you don’t stay up late at night. Sleep for at least 8 hours a day; this is because the muscle building hormones release when you are asleep. This is a question/answer style video of how to get in enough calories as a vegan. Also answering the question of is it healthy to be slightly underweight. Random Vegan Girl's Question - I have a question and was wondering if you could help. So I went vegan in the beginning of 2016, but I have a difficult time maintaining my weight. I always ate portions that were small because my stomach has always been small. When I was eating animal products I was easily able to eat like 1600 calories since they are so calorie dense. Then when I went vegan I started eating more plant foods. I ate alot of plant foods before I went vegan, but I also ate animal products... I am not focused on keeping my fat intake super low or anything like that, I just eat whole foods and don't really care if they are high carb, low carb, high fat, or high protein. I just get what's affordable. Since plant foods are much lower in calories, I can't eat more then 1300 calories a day. I get full from 1300 calories. Some people have told me to eat higher fat plant foods since they are more dense. Foods like avocados and coconut are very expensive in my country so I don't eat or buy them. Nuts and seeds are also expensive but not as expensive as avocados and coconut, so I do eat nuts and seeds a couple times a week. Even with higher fat foods, I can't seem to get in enough calories. I used to weight 48-50 kilos (108-110 pounds), but now I'm 46 kilos (101 pounds) and I'm 5'4 (164cm), which means I'm underweight. Is it possible to be slightly underweight and still be healthy? I watched a video that the youtuber Brianna Jackfruitson made about why she's not a raw vegan anymore, and she said that when she was fully raw, she was underweight because she was able to eat large amounts of food and never go hungry, but she was really taking in little calories since fruits and vegetables are so low in calories. I look similar to how she looked when she was underweight. She did look healthy and did eat healthy, so being underweight for so long didn't seem like a problem for her. If I can be at the weight I am right now and be healthy then I don't think that it's necessary for me to gain weight, I would have to eat alot more and I think it would be very difficult. So can a person be slightly underweight and healthy? And do I need to worry about getting enough calories? I don't care about being the healthiest person ever, I just want to be relatively healthy, and also I read that it can be dangerous to be underweight. I am afraid of stuff like losing my period because when girls are underweight they usually lose their period. For example, a 170 pound person may not be overweight if they are very tall but could be overweight if they are very short. A person can calculate their BMI by visiting the CDC's Adult BMI Calculator. Ranges for BMI include: Underweight: less than 18.5. Normal/healthy weight: 18.5 to 24.9. Overweight: 25.0 to 29.9. Obese: 30 or higher. These calculations may be slightly inaccurate for a person who is an elite or endurance athlete whose body has a significant amount of muscle. This is because muscle weighs more than fat.

Causes of underweight and physical symptoms of being underweight in Healthy Life It may not be related to the age only. Anybody can be lean. He might be tendency to be lean from the beginning, not suddenly, that in late 20’s he has got leaner. First is Iron deficiency. If he has iron deficiency, then the person does not have appetite to eat. If he doesn’t eat, he cannot have muscles. So first we have to deal with his iron deficiency. So we have to improve his diet by taking iron rich foods like all the greens are rich in iron, and all the dark colored vegetables like brinjal beetroot, they are all rich in iron. All the fruits like dark colored fruits like black grapes and jamuns,they are rich in iron. So the person has to take all these foods. Dark coloured fruits and green coloured vegetables and fruits. He would also have to supplement his diet with iron supplements. Second thing is if the person has taken too much food and the person is still leaner, then he has to check 2 things, like if he has thyroid, a hyperthyroid where the metabolism is too fast, person may looses lots of weight. Second is absorption of B Vitamin deficiency, where the absorption does not take place. So in most of the cases, he or she may be getting leaner. So they have to check with the doctor for deficiencies like hyperthyroid tests, then it can be dealt with the deficiencies. Like for iron deficiencies, like increasing the iron in the persons diet, the appetite increases and if the person is having little more food everyday, weight gain of 2 kgs per month can be seen. If he or she is suffering from hyperthyroid, it has to be shown to a doctor and dealt with. If Vitamin B 12 deficiency is there, it can be dealt with the nutrition. So increase the diet with Vitamin B rich foods, or dietary supplements because nutritional content in all the foods is not sufficient now. Or he cannot take lots of fruits and vegetables. Only the choice is like more curd, more cheese, more pomegranate, some other fruits. In his diet Vitamin B supplementation can correct the deficiency in a short period of time. How do you know if you’re underweight? Your body mass index (BMI) can help you and your doctor determine if you’re underweight. BMI is an estimate of your body fat based on your height and weight. BMI range Weight status below 18.5 underweight 18.5-24.9 normal 25-29.9 overweight 30 or above obese There are some limitations to determining your health using BMI alone. Athletes can have muscular builds. Since muscle weighs more than fat, BMI may overestimate body fat for these individuals. Older adults may have lost muscle. In this case, BMI may underestimate body fat. Malnutrition If you’re underweight, you may not be eating enough healthy foods with key nutrients to fuel your body. That can cause malnutrition. Over time, malnutrition can affect your health in a number of different ways that may be noticeable to you or those around you. Your symptoms might include: feeling tired or drained of energy getting sick often or having trouble fighting off illness having irregular or skipped periods in females experiencing hair thinning or loss, dry skin, or teeth issues A study from Japan compared dietary habits of underweight women with a desire to be thin vs. underweight women without this desire. They found that the underweight women with a desire to be thin had less healthy eating habits than underweight women who did not have this desire. If you’re underweight, you may be more likely to also be malnourished if your low BMI is caused by an unbalanced diet or an underlying disease that affects nutrient absorption. Malnutrition can also lead to anemia or a deficiency in essential vitamins. Anemia can also be caused by malabsorption of nutrients. Decreased immune function A recent review of studies found a connection between increased infections and being underweight. The researchers noted their difficulty in determining if this is a result of being underweight or if it has more to do the underlying causes for being underweight. For example, malnourishment may lead to decreased immune function and also cause people to be underweight. More research is needed to fully understand the connection between weight and immune function. Increased risk of surgical complications One study found evidence that underweight people who had total knee replacement surgery were more likely to develop infections following the surgery than people who were not underweight. While they could not determine the reasons for this, they believe underweight people aren’t able to heal wounds as well as people with a normal BMI. They also found that the underweight group had low preoperative hemoglobin. While more research is needed, the findings suggest that being underweight can affect your ability to heal wounds. Another study found increased complications in underweight people who had total hip replacement surgery compared with people of normal weight. Complications following coronary bypass surgery and lung transplants also seem to be higher for people who are underweight. Researchers have also linked low BMI to increased incidences of postoperative deaths within the first year following a lower extremity bypass surgery. Osteoporosis Low body weight may increase your risk for low bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis. One study looked at BMD in 1,767 premenopausal women, and found that 24 percent of women with a BMI of 18.5 or lower had a low BMD. Only 9.4 percent of participants with a BMI higher than 18.5 had low BMD. The study results suggest that being underweight increases risk for osteoporosis. Infertility Women with low BMIs are at increased risk for amenorrhea, which is an absence of menses, and other menstrual cycle dysfunctions. Irregular or missed menstrual cycles may be an indicator of anovulation, or that you aren’t ovulating. Chronic anovulation may cause infertility. If you’re trying to conceive and are underweight, talk to your doctor. They can do a simple blood test to see if you’re regularly ovulating. They can also test for other signs of infertility.
