Helen Low, Head of design for brands within womenswear tells us all about the new collections for spring/summer 2012.
There are lots and lots of exciting themes and trends, which we're showcasing to the press. People have been really, really positive. They've loved the colour, they've loved our use of print, which is one of the big, big trends for next season. So we've got five key trends that we're launching for spring/summer, starting in January and going right the way through the spring/summer season.
The first trend is Park Avenue. It's a chic, smart, sophisticated look for summer. There were lots and lots of pastels on the catwalk and this feels really quite a new direction for colour for us. Not sugary sweet pastels as such so nothing that looks too childlike but a real sense of a colour shift into these sorbet type colours. So lemon is going to be a really, really important colour as is full yellow later on in the season and candy pinks as well. So we've mixed them with white, cream, greys and black to give a sophisticated look to a Park
Second trend that we've got is Deco Diva and as the name suggests we've taken inspiration form the 1920 and from the art deco movement. So we've got lots of black and cream, geometric, angular prints, lots of cutting and blocking of colour. Moving on the colour blocking that we've been seeing the last few seasons
and lots of geometric type prints. Quite an ornate opulent look. Again, quite sophisticated and special. And the sea foam colour, which is a kind of mint green with a bit of a blue to it is one of the big, big colours for next spring.
We've also then got a story that we're calling Track Stars, which is around a reference to a sort of sporty feel. Quite American in its influence using washed silk for oversized parkers, pique fabrics, airtex fabrics giving us quite a sporty look. This look is influenced by the fact that we've got the olympics next year and that whole feeling of layered dressing and quite a relaxed, chic sportswear feel. It's a style and a way of wearing clothing that has a reference to urban sports.
The next trend that we'd like to talk to you about is Culture Clash and this is really about a real mix up of print and colour and strong pattern. Every year we have a sort of ethnic, tribal type reference but this year it feels really, really strong. So it's about mixed florals, lots and lots of digital printing, which allows us to have a mass of colours within a print and really moves our prints on this season. Great maxi dresses, fringe knitwear, lots of layered jackets, which you can wear over dresses and a real sort of mix up of cultures in influence around wearing prints with prints so really, really strong story.
And our last story, a real fun story is Miami Kitsch. A strong 1950s reference, quite tongue and cheek, playful, fabulous for our holiday wardrobe, so you'll see some great fun prints on swimwear, flamingoes, conversational prints, little cat prints. And all really about bright, strong pastels and washed down fluros.
So it's going to be a really exciting spring/summer for Marks & Spencer, all around colour, excitement, lots and lots of newness to treat yourself and to update your wardrobe. Fabulous accessories, bags and footwear that really allow you to get into the season without necessarily having to invest in the whole outfit but loads and loads of exciting, colourful things coming your way.
