Yet whatever the figure, the sight of some of the world’s biggest and best racing in Palma Majorca was spectacular. Meanwhile, in the closest match in the history of the Volvo Ocean Race, three boats on equal points put everything on the line to battle for overall victory. In Zadar, Croatia the competition was just as close in the second event of the 52 Superseries, as was the action in the offshore stage of the Rolex Giraglia. And there’s more. Extremes in Cascais, the Golden Globe in Les Sables d’Olonne, plus during the build up to the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, we take a look at how one Olympic sailor is balancing her campaign with a new family life.

This year, as details of a brutal weather forecast started to sink in, the mood on the dock swung as tension began to build. The 3,500 mile race to Guadeloupe was going to be tough; boat busting, strength sapping tough. After a perfect drag racing start, the big winds and huge waves swept in. Boats broke and skippers retired, yet some pushed on through. We tell the story. Plus, we go foiling indoors to find out how a high performance America’s Cup boat could provide the basis for a radical new commercial vessel. Ripping up the Rotten Deck! Sailing around the World! (Sailing Nandji) Ep 121

17:26
We discovered lots of soft patches on the Bow on Nandji and take the plunge and see what we find. We are repairing Nandji to continue our journey Sailing around the world. https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji we are held up from the engine install and start on another repair project of attending to the soft spots on the bow. We remove the old windlass to install the new but discover a little more rot than expected! Yosh takes to the soft spots with a chisel and hammer and uncovered wet wood under the fibreglass. Like most boat jobs, things must get worse before they can get better and before you know it, a huge portion of the bow is ripped up and wood taken out. We take you through the steps we used to repair, replace and restore the area. We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The World Sailing Show - May 2016

23:04
Why would a moustache make you go faster offshore? We find out why some of the world’s top solo racing teams are sprouting weird shaped foils out either side of the 60ft racing machines and why they have got this nickname. We also head to the Big Apple, New York, to see America’s Cup racing on the Hudson River against the spectacular Manhattan backdrop. This was the first time that Cup boats had raced here for 120 years. Women sailors were queuing around the block when a new Olympic class was announced for the 2016 Games. Three years later and the learning curve has been steep, but the results impressive. So who’s in the frame for a medal in Rio? Olympic expert Andy Rice lifts the lid on the women’s skiff and gives his predictions for Rio. And on the subject of the Games, there’s one nation that has been in the top three medal winners for years, but now they want more, Gold. We find out how they are planning for success out as we head to the Sailing World Cup in Hyères. Plus, news from around the world.

Out With The Old & In With The New - Ep. 145 RAN Sailing

22:00
The main focus this year has been our Alaska and British Columbia cruise and with all the traveling we’ve done, boat projects and maintenance have had to wait. But we’re going to tackle all that now when we’ll be in Seattle for a while. First up is our chain locker! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. HOW TO PASSAGE PLAN THROUGH PIRATES & TYPHOONS! - SAILING FOLLOWTHEBOAT JPNW 02

12:03
Q. How do you plan a passage through pirates and typhoons? A. Carefully! 👍 If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE, your feedback gets us noticed by YouTube and helps people discover us! Thank you. When we realised we would have to passage plan through pirates and typhoons across 7000 miles, Liz rolled up her sleeves and got down to some serious research... CONSIDERATIONS FOR WORLD PASSAGE PLANNING: 1. Weather and currents 2. Political situation 3. Security threats WHY ARE WE HEADING EASTBOUND ACROSS THE PACIFIC? Most vessels travel east to west, and you may have seen other sailing channels doing exactly that. This is because the trade winds, currents and weather patterns make it the natural and more comfortable choice for a circumnavigation. Heading east is more difficult because all of these things are against you. With detailed planning, it is possible, and a number of boats do it every year. WEATHER The most important aspect when planning a passage of this length is to work with known weather systems. Not taking into consideration all the local cruising we will have, the total miles for a direct passage is: From Tioman to Alaska approximately 6,500 miles. From Tioman to BC, it's around 7,500 miles. FOUR CRUCIAL STAGES WHERE WEATHER WINDOWS DICTATE OUR TIMINGS: 1. Tioman to Borneo 2. Borneo to Philippines 3. Philippines to Japan 4. Japan to PNW IN A NUTSHELL: 1. Tioman to Borneo via Anambas – Depart June/August 2. Remain in Borneo, cruising Sarawak and Sabah for around seven months 3. Borneo to Philippines – Depart March 4. Remain in Philippines for two months 5. Philippines to Japan – Depart May 6. Remain in Japan, cruising for around two months 7. Japan to PNW – Depart July/August SO WHAT COULD CHANGE? Anything and everything! Keep following us to find out what happens next... THE BEST SAILING DESTINATION IN THE WORLD- SAILING FOLLOWTHEBOAT Ep 93

19:01
▶ Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/followtheboat In 12 years of cruising around the world, this is the MOST BEAUTIFUL AND SPECTACULAR place we have EVER VISITED! You can ONLY GET HERE BY BOAT! Kick back and enjoy some soothing relaxation with the beautiful drone and underwater footage of this tropical island paradise. Moonrock Bay is an exceptional place, with some of the most healthy coral we have seen anywhere, a coral garden next to each of the paradise islands and a pristine reef just a little further out. Could this really be the best sailing destination in the world? We will remember sailing in Indonesia and visiting the Anambas island group for the rest of our lives. This is why people become world cruisers. We saw turtles swimming and tracks of new hatchlings in the sand. We stayed for four days, but could have stayed for four weeks or four months. We hope you enjoy this, our most ever relaxing video. What Really Happens when you’re Sailing Around the World (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 44

15:30
For me, sometimes extreme boredom, frustration with the motion of the boat, feeling isolated/alone, and missing friends and family bucket loads can lead to a little bit of a breakdown every now and then. I’m only human! There are always dramas onboard (EVERYONE has them), weather it be physical or mental. When La Vagabonde has been rocking and rolling back and forth for 4 days straight, and I’ve been copping bruises from the furniture and hoping for the slightest break in the weather that never comes, a boiling pot of water being thrown at me you could say was my last straw. The good times always end up evening out with the bad, but the unpredictability of each day can be stressful and has been since day 1. One day can be the best day of my life, filled with aqua blue waters, smooth sails, palm trees and sunshine, and the next can be the worst….. no sleep for a few days, breaking expensive equipment, haven’t showered or eaten and I’m questioning what on earth I’m doing trying to sail around the world having no sailing experience. But in the end, it’s all worth it for me. I love every minute of it, what we have seen and done around the world with Riley on La Vagabonde. But holey tolitos sometimes it can be tough! Do you guys want to see more of the bad times in videos? Please leave a comment and let me know. Love, Elayna. Want the chance to come aboard/unseen footage privileges? Sailing Annapolis Boat Show

13:14
The boat show season continues with the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, a charming historic town where we meet up with many popular sailing authors, filmmakers, bloggers and vloggers. During this boat show, we’re based at the Discovery Yachts Group booth aboard the Southerly 540 on display. The layout is similar to that of our new boat, Distant Shores III, the new Southerly 480 we’re having built so we show you around. The weather is unseasonably warm for this year’s boat show and we speak with lots of Distant Shores fans who drop by the booth to say hello as they search for their dream boat and enjoy the sunshine. We also take you to a couple of the cruising seminars that we give each year at the show. The highlight of the weekend is an evening sail with friends aboard their Southerly 42, “Times Remembered”, where we’re treated to a sunset view of the town and boat show from the water. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Featured in this video: United States Sailboat Show: http://www.annapolisboatshows.com/united-states-sailboat-show/ Discovery Yachts Group / Southerly Yachts: https://discoveryyachtsgroup.com/ Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose: https://www.youtube.com/sailingyachtrubyrose Cruising World Magazine: https://www.cruisingworld.com/ Canadian Yachting Magazine: http://www.canadianyachting.ca/ Cruising Outpost Magazine: http://www.cruisingoutpost.com/ Cruising Off Duty: https://www.youtube.com/cruisingoffduty Sailing Totem: http://www.sailingtotem.com/ Voyaging with Kids book: http://www.voyagingwithkids.com/ The Boat Galley website and cookbook: https://theboatgalley.com/ Lin Pardey/Storm Tactics DVD: http://www.landlpardey.com/storm-tactics-video-dvd.html On the Wind Podcast/59-North: https://www.59-north.com/podcast/ Windtraveler.net: http://www.windtraveler.net/ #BVIStrong T-shirts and Hats: http://www.remembertheadventure.com/bvistrong World Cruising Club Rallies and Seminars: https://www.worldcruising.com/index.aspx Sail Magazine: https://www.sailmagazine.com/ ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• All 130 full half-hour episodes of the Distant Shores Sailing Adventure TV series are available as HD downloads and also on DVD thourgh the Distant Shores website. The Lows of Sailing around the World (Sailing Nandji) Ep 104

18:53
Sailing around the World is not always easy... https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, Bonita is faced with some difficult times. After receiving bad news from home, she had a health scare. The hard part about being away from friends and family iand travelling in remote areas and underdeveloped countires, is that when things go wrong, there is no where to turn to. Needing to leave Indonesia because of our visas, this passage from Ambopn to Dili was a difficult one with many other factors on the minds of both of us. I guess Sailing around the world is not meant to be easy. There are many great times but some very hard times along the way. NANDJI"S NEW MOTOR We reached our target for getting Nandji a new engine! We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of no where, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! Hydroptere, the world's fastest sailing yacht

04:40
When it comes to speed, Hydroptere has no problem leaving the competition behind. This attitude undoubtedly comes from Alain Thébault, who spent years exploring multihull hydrofoil designs to develop one of the world's fastest boats. ("Hydro" is Greek for "water." "Ptere" is Greek for "wings.") During the 1980s and '90s Thébault adjusted his design repeatedly. By making a one-third scale version of his idea, he was able to test the differences of minor changes on the craft's overall performance. By 1994, he was ready to launch Hydroptere for her first flight. By 1995, Thébault had turned her into the world's fastest sailing yacht.
Sailing the BUSIEST Shipping Channel in the WORLD! (Sailing Nandji) Ep 115

17:42
Stopping the boat from sinking on Christmas, we take Nandji through the Busiest Shipping lane in the world! https://www.sailingnandji.com After a sailing through the night on our 8th day of passage on Christmas eve, we make a spontaneous decision to stop off on Christmas day to speak to family. With the polluted water of the city, a squall blows through in the wee hours of the morning and we drag anchor because of the plastic on the bottom. Finally in the safety of Nongsa Point Marina, we rest up and let the unusual weather blow through up north. We celebrate New Years eve and enjoy the week spent in the luxurious resort/marina. Having a swimming pool to play in, air conditioning, cold drinks and a washing machine! Oh the luxuries!! The weather clears and it is time to sail in the busiest shipping lane in the world! We had been nervous about this passage ever since deciding to sail this far to the boat yard. The Singapore strait was an eye opener as the sheer size and speed of the vessels passing so close to you kept us on the edge of our seats! Sailing the Most Beautiful Place in the World (Sailing Nandji) Ep 99

13:08
If i was ever to have an Eye-gasm.. it would happen here! Most spectacular place i've ever been! https://www.sailingnandji.com This week on Sailing Nandji, we make the decision to sail of the beaten path and head super remote in search of the most beautiful place in the world. During our time in Raja Ampat we had seen other tourists and dive boats from nearby resorts. We wanted to get as far away as we could, to the hard to reach places where very few make the effort to go. We first thought we would not visit the island of Wayag as it exactly that, a long way away. With strong trade winds blowing, it would be downwind sailing to reach the island but make it extremely difficult to leave. We decided it was worth it, even if we got stuck for a week or two. What we discovered was simply amazing and well worth the effort of being stranded in paradise! We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We just arrived to Indonesia after cruising the Pacific islands. We departed Australia 12 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of no where, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! Diving with Peaceful Giants - Adventure 45 of Sailing Around the World

15:29
We just officially launched our own Shop! Go check it out: https://sailingnahoa.com/shop/ SUNGLASSES: https://sungod.to/Q2quGU86 WANT US TO MAKE MORE VIDEOS? https://www.patreon.com/nahoa Fiji is a fantastic mixing pot of culture. With a massive Indian influence in the major cities to Kava drinking locals in the outer islands. It is an experience that we will never forget. In this adventure we entertain ourselves in the big city of Suva then set sail to Kandavu known for it’s incredible diving on astrolobe reef and Kava. The diving was indeed spectacular. From Manta Rays to Dog Tooth Tuna. Kandavu has it all including Kava! As we sail around the world we always do research before setting arriving in a new place. We google. We read blogs of other cruisers. This time we came across the logs of the sailing vessel Delos (the first pioneers of sailing youtube channels). Sure enough, they came to Kandavu and sailed right into Kavala Bay. It's no coincidence that the word 'Kava' is inside 'Kavala Bay'. As soon as we stepped foot on land we were invited that night to a Kava ceremony. Kava is a big deal in Fiji as well as well as many other nations in the South Pacific especially Vanuatu. Kava is a muddy drink made by grinding up Kava root. It's a sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant. Basically it's effects are much like alcohol but perhaps not as strong. Finally after much shenanigans in Kandavu, we were off to the Yasawas, the sunny side of Fiji where the beautiful beaches, sunsets and scenery did not disappoint! We hope you enjoy this episode as we poke around the south and western parts of Fiji. THE MOST UNSPOILT ISLANDS IN THE WORLD? - SAILING FOLLOWTHEBOAT EXTRA

10:48
In 12 years of cruising around the world, this is the MOST BEAUTIFUL AND SPECTACULAR place we have EVER VISITED! Previously unseen footage from the air and underwater of this stunning deserted island highlighted in our previous episode, The Best Sailing Destination In The World? ❤️ Fancy spreading some love? Join our crew and become a FOLLOWTHEBOAT MATE! It'll cost you less than the price of a coffee... ☕ http://followtheboat.com/THANKS/ You can ONLY GET HERE BY BOAT! WHY I LOVE MY BOAT.

10:00
(#6 of 7) I mentioned there in the vid that we distanced ourselves from Outremer when we first got onboard. There were many comments along the lines of “new boat and this show is just going to be one giant advert now.” I hope we have done enough by now to show people we wouldn’t compromise the integrity of the videos we love to make so dearly. Nearly 2 years have gone by now and a very sincere thank you to this company was well overdue. They were willing to help us when no one else was apart from all of you guys watching our videos and our Crew of Patrons. Istvan Kopar finishes 4th in GGR 2018 Sailing Race, Golden Globe Race

11:57
Istvan Kopar went from last (13th place) to 4th place from day 27 to day 263 of the 2018 Golden Globe Race. The Hungarian-American solo sailor battled broken steering, busted windvanes, lost log lines, broken radios, and peeling fingernails to best 14 other competitors at the start of the the 2018 Golden Globe Race (GGR). The GGR 2018 is a retro race that bans the use of satellite phones and GPS navigation. Kopar got a 24-hour time penalty added to his 263 days at sea because of an unsanctioned stop and sat phone use. All the first four finishers of the sailboat race for full-keel yachts of 32-to-36 feet long have been penalized for breaking the retro rules of the yacht race. The video quotes from his GGR bio: "Istvan Kopar, a Hungarian-born American, is a professional sailor and U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain who has logged more than 60,000 nautical miles sailing solo. His proudest accomplishment to date was his solo one-stop circumnavigation in 1990-1991 without the aid of GPS. He relied on a sextant, manual chart plotting, and weather forecasts broadcast in Morse code. Sailing a 31-foot boat that he had built himself, Istvan completed the voyage in record time for the size of his yacht. Istvan also skippered the winning yacht in the 1996/97 Hong Kong Challenge around the world yacht race. He was among the top finishers in the 1992 America 500-Columbus Transatlantic Race, and won the Kapry’s Trophy in the 1995 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). He says of the GGR: 'This race is custom-made for me. My first hero and role model was Joshua Slocum, the first recorded solo circumnavigator. He had no land support, no modern navigation and communication devices, or even a mechanical wind vane. He was the real deal. And he was able to accomplish this historic achievement due to his upbringing and constant connection with the oceans and sailing.'" "Boat RACE NO 37 Name Puffin Type Tradewind 35 Cutter Designer John Rock Builder Tradewind Yachts (NL) LOA 35.01ft / 10.67m LWL 25.82ft / 7.87m Beam 10.50ft / 3.20m Draft 5.51ft / 1.68m Displacement 19442 lbs / 8819 kgs Sail area 725sq. ft / 67.35sq. m Istvan Kopar purchased the 1986-built Tradewind 35 class yacht Puffin in 2015 to compete in the GGR..."
